Potential licensing issue with the atomic swaps and I just want to raise it here since there's the open proposal
repo.getmonero.org/monero-project/c…roposals/-/merge_requests/277/diffs
-
sgp_
Do you need this to be BSD-3 or is GPL or LGPL okay?
-
sgp_
GPL/LGPL are copyleft licenses
-
sgp_
this is the current atomic swap license (GPL):
github.com/noot/atomic-swap/blob/master/LICENSE

What is the reason you sgp_ don't like the BSD-3? I don't understand the problem regarding atomic swap.
-
netrik182
msvb-web: it's the other way around
-
netrik182
The code is GPL
-
luigi1112
can Monero use GPL code? Is that the question?
-
msvb-web
I see, netrik. The proposed license for the ETH atomic swap code is GPL.
-
kayabaNerve
It's not AGPL and we're not discussing integrating it into monerod. While I don't like GPL and think it should be LGPL at the least, preferably BSD-3/MIT, it's not unusable on that basis alone of course
-
qeermen[m]
Hello
-
sgp_
luigi1112: yes, Monero itself could use GPL code in theory. But a company couldn't take those GPL components and use those behind closed doors
-
sgp_
LMDB was going to switch to the sleepycat license but the monero project said we would not use code in monero core with that license
-
sgp_
there's nothing preventing MAGIC from being able to fund a project released under the GPL, but I want to make sure everyone understands what this means. From my perspective, I'm not a huge fan of copyleft licenses, and I would prefer even the LGPL over the GPL
-
sgp_
some people like to force their code to only be used in free software however, and for that the GPL is a good choice
-
spirobel[m]
maybe something like MIT for everyone except people that work for the government/the government

Doesn't eslint do something like that?

sgp_
would publishing the Ethereum atomic swaps under GPL prevent a company from using the code to swap using a proprietary trading engine?
-
sgp_
I'm worried the answer could be yes
-
rottenstonks
<sgp_> some people like to force their code to only be used in free software however, and for that the GPL is a good choice
-
rottenstonks
you do can redistribute software licensed under GPL and not only that, but also profit off of it. no clause in GPLv(x) derivatives hinders anyone from doing such.
-
rottenstonks
It has happened in the past. As long as the fork gives proper credit to author and keeps the license alive, it is doable.
-
rottenstonks
you are forcing it, but you can redistribute and sell it as well. just a note. not implying you were saying that wasn't possible per se.
-
rottenstonks
wasn't the ethos of Monero very copyleft, FOSS leaning? What is wrong with preventing proprietary trading engines to use a component of the XMR stack?
-
rottenstonks
me no comprendo.

<sgp_> "lol, the "anyone but the NSA..." <-

-
luigi1111w
<rottenstonks> wasn't the ethos of Monero very copyleft <= I don't think so
-
rottenstonks
luigi1111w: hm, how come?
-
rottenstonks
do elaborate.
-
luigi1111w
why doesn't Monero have a copyleft license if so?
-
rottenstonks
you tell me. you are core team, not me.
-
luigi1111w
there have been some voices in support in the past
-
luigi1111w
but not in general or enough to change the license
-
idk[m]
Field-of-Endeavor discrimination is definitely a thing with consequences for "Anyone but" licenses
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Douglas_Crockford#%22Good,_not_Evil%22 softwareengineering.stackexchange.c…the-no-evil-license-to-make-it-free that kind of thing can't be included in many community-driven GNU/Linux distributions/software repositories. Significantly, Debian. I understand the
-
idk[m]
decision(made by both parties) in theory but have my doubts in practice.
-
rottenstonks
right. what license is it published under at the moment?
-
luigi1111w
broad support and adoption under as many usecases as possible I think is one justification
-
luigi1111w
bsd-3
-
rottenstonks
ah, based bsd-3.
-
rottenstonks
bsd licenses are neat-o. arguably 'freer' than gpl derivatives.
-
rottenstonks
wouldn't change then. fsf and gpl licenses involve a lot of neckbeardism and politicis.
-
luigi1111w
I do agree with sgp_ message above (mentioning MAGIC)
-
rottenstonks
pardon my french.
-
rottenstonks
MIT and Apache are good too.
-
rottenstonks
at least through my lens and experience.
-
luigi1111w
yep I like MIT
-
luigi1111w
there are others with different opinions ofc, don't wanna promote that everyone supports permissive licenses
-
rottenstonks
software licenses... lots of fun and zero drama. yipee.
-
sgp_
I personally like MIT and BSD-3. I think "the freedom to use the software for any purpose," should include the ability to use the software and not make it open source personally
-
sgp_
But that said, I see why someone would want to require FOSS derivative works
-
sgp_
the risks of someone making a proprietary atomic swap implementation are super low anyway. Who would trust a proprietary atomic swap implementation? LOL
-
Epsilon
A lot of people trust proprietary exchanges and wallets so I imagine theres going to be people who would trust a proprietary atomic swap implementation
-
luigi1111w
sgp_> would publishing the Ethereum atomic swaps under GPL prevent a company from using the code to swap using a proprietary trading engine?
-
luigi1111w
this more interesting than a public release
-
sgp_
on the MAGIC side, I'm going to push for at least LGPL. Obviously I prefer MIT/BSD-3 but at least the LGPL is easier to work with in more cases
-
sgp_
<luigi1111w> "this more interesting than a..." <- what do you mean?
-
luigi1111w
um
-
luigi1111w
you said "who would trust a proprietary..." and that's fair
-
luigi1111w
for private implementation I think it's fine to support (ie, not prevent)
-
luigi1111w
maybe I'm confused

I would be wary of using that wallet as it's not recommended on getmonero.org or r/Monero.

msvb-lab: i am genuinely interested in hearing updates about the Kastelo project (i really assumed it was dead / buried) is there a place on the internet where you have explained whats going on with it? e.g. you have problems with manufacturing contracts etc? It would help clear the air a lot - im sure everyone here can't wait for it to be available, and the next time someone excited person asks about it we can link them to a page
-
plowsof[m]
where they can be informed on the status of the project, Thanks!
-
msvb-lab
plowsof[m]: The status reports were lost, or at least all but one of them.
-
msvb-lab
The current information regards tooling at the mold which is subcontracted to people who refuse to report outside of email, and I usually don't understand it. Sliders, lifts, cavities, arm buffers, screw links, and drafts. For example. Do you feel better now that you know some of the progress? Anyway, today we tested the T3 results (we shot PC and ABS mixed together for the first time at the right temperature.) I
-
msvb-lab
requested to skip T5, but will let the materials subcontractors finally decide.
-
msvb-lab
By the way, all of this belongs on #monero-hardware. If you pay attention there you hear me inform of HDPE and LDPE wall thicknesses, and other such reporting.
-
msvb-lab
No plowsof[m], we don't have problems with the manufacturing contracts. A lot of printing is happening at the moment, with long contracts with contractors that have performed well in the past.
-
msvb-lab
The only new contracting is from specialised groups that can print on polyethylene (PE) because we'll use that more. Almost nobody can print on PE so let's cross the fingers and hope there are no problems like you mention (contract says they can do it but they don't know until they try and fail, or something.)
-
lza_menace
hasn't there been a ton of support threads where people were getting funds stolen after using xmrwallet.com?
-
lza_menace
i don't want to start calling out services where it's not warranted, but I'm fairly certain xmrwallet.com falls squarely in the "DO NOT TRUST" bucket
-
plowsof[m]
"Do you feel better now that you know some of the progress?" Yes! msvb-lab all of this 'behind the scenes' information is great, shows the project is alive and kicking. I would have loved to seen a post somewhere about the T3 results today, even if it was just a mundane picture of someone watching paint / ABS plastic set. If you had a little blog even or if its all in #monero-hardware already then i was not aware of that channel (i
-
plowsof[m]
will join it now / point others to it when the question comes up again)
-
msvb-lab
I'm surprised you feel better plowsof[m] but it was an honest question, good for me too if it helps.
-
msvb-lab
A picture of the T1 to T3 progression is available on #monero-hardware if you like.
-
plowsof[m]
Im going to take a guess here and assume that alot of people in this community would be surprised that kastelo is actively being worked on, i hope these little updates are posted somewhere with visibility e.g. reddit / social media ( im thinking about how Raspberry Pi handled marketing in the beginning - updates about shipment orders / deals with contractors - supply chain issues , pictures of real humans interacting with an early

sgp_: Replying to an old message about a proprietary trading engine using GPL code. If it only talks over some form of IPC, it's not an issue. Even if directly integrated, the only obligation is to make the code available to customers, not to the public as a whole, upon request. While I'm not endorsing the GPL here, it shouldn't bar corporate adoption. It would bar integration into another project which wasn't also GPL though, which
-
kayabaNerve
would be my concern.
