trying to help them and i dont have hands on device. i just told them to wait till i can look at it.

just thinking through what all could have gone wrong.

I would also vote for "not synced". Because things like the node they connect to not connected with the wider Monero network seem improbable.

Or even theories that the connected node is malicious and just ignores their transaction :)
