Is there a reduction in anonymity if I open two wallets within the same monero client? I run Qubes OS where I can have separate virtual machines for each monero wallet that are isolated, but to do so would require me to download the blockchain on both which is tedious and takes up space.

I'm less concerned about the implications on security; that if the single virtual machine gets compromised both wallets are. I'm just looking for your educated opinions on whether sharing a node / app between two wallets in any way creates correlation between the two?

merope
If you already have a local node, then no information leaves your computer anyway (as far as syncing the wallets go)

You could run monerod as its own instance and expose rpc port to your wallet vms.
-
merope
No real point in running two separate vms for two instances of the same wallet software
-
merope
Either both are compromised or none are compromised

spirobel[m]
<merope> "Either both are compromised or..." <- that was not the question. read clearly sirs
-
merope
That was in response to deverick's mention of "wallet vms"
-
merope
But no, two separate wallets should not have any effect on eachother, because they are not aware of eachother. All they can do is sync tx information and sign+send transactions
-
spirobel[m]
if I was hackerman using qubes os. I would just run two separate vms. I just wouldnt risk it.

less to do with the "same client" and more to do with the routing of your transactions from your node and related utxos among wallets, assuming your node is being monitored/sybil'd etc.

I was replying in one of the others rooms this was asked

smh.
-

Theres also no reason why youd have to have 2 nodes. You can have sep vms for wallets and use 1 node
-
ofrnxmr[m]
For both of them

Dandelion++ also helps to address some of these concerns on harm to anonymity by using the same node. It would be more focused on peering nodes but still should be considered.

<ofrnxmr[m]> "Theres also no reason why youd..." <- There is a reason: it increases the chance that you fuck up. To not mess up opsec its best to keep the process as simple as possible. So either keep all wallets in one vm with one node. Or split them into multiple vms (but with their own node each).

Welcome everyone to the Monero Holy Studies, where we discuss all things monero from new potential updates to the blockchain, new ideas on projects using monero, monero's circular economy and more.
