afungible[m] IRC cuts quotes, what issue?

Given GitHub's move about Tornado Cash, I'm beginning to think that Monero's dev should have a quickly deployable plan B....
-
jwinterm
baro77[m]: monero core already runs gitlab instance for ccs, presumably could easily be used to host code too
-
moneromooo
It's chock full of spam though. I gave up on that looong ago :(
-
baro77[m]
jwinterm: I suppose so, but I wonder how much time would be needed for developers to switch to the new environment.... maybe I'm wrong but habit to GitHub is really widespread I guess
-
jwinterm
it's literally just changing a url for developers I think
-
jwinterm
git set remote......
-
moneromooo
Yes, I had to switch to github from gitlab yesterday, it's a one liner. As long as there is a clear explanation where to change it, it's trivial.
-
baro77[m]
moneromooo: ok, good, nice to hear that.... I thought there was dependence on some GitHub feat, but if all is plain git, I got the point :)
-
moneromooo
You'll be losing all comments of course (issues, reviews...)
-
baro77[m]
so let's say the core work of main contributors maybe would recover quickly.. but I suspect the "community side" (if relevant by any means) would have some more troubles...
-
jwinterm
tbh something probably should have been done as soon after microsoft bought github, and I think this latest move affecting tornado cash just highlights that
-
jwinterm
but that is probably off-topic
-
baro77[m]
<jwinterm> "but that is probably off-topic" <- sorry, I stop chit-chatting about that
-
ErCiccione
All github history is being backed up as far as i know and switching to the self hosted gitlab or somewhere else should be easy and without history loss, as far as i know.
-
ErCiccione
so issues, pull requests and a lot more are saved every day buy backhub, i think it was called
-
ErCiccione
<jwinterm> "tbh something probably should..." <- This was discussed at length:
monero-project/meta #236
-
moneromooo
Oh, that's what backhub is... Nice.
-
selsta
tornado cash domain also got taken down, and not sure about their hosting
-
selsta
so just self hosting isn't enough if a project gets on a sanctions list
-
sech1
Host it in a country that doesn't follow sanctions
-
ErCiccione
yeah, moving stuff away from the US would be good regardless
-
jwinterm[m]
The USA basically owns ICANN though no? So domain is at risk no matter where hosted?
-
nikg83[m]
jwinterm[m]: They haven’t killed .ru domains yet ?
-
jwinterm[m]
Good point
-
fluffypony
baro77[m]: we have multiple fallbacks
-
fluffypony
(1) we have already deployed and tested (and subsequently rejected permanently using) self-hosted GitLab
-
fluffypony
(2) we use Rewind (formerly BackHub) to keep a constant backup of our GitHub, including issues / PRs / comments etc., which can be restored to GitLab etc.
-
fluffypony
in the event of all of that failing we literally have tens of thousands of copies of the source code all over the world
-
fluffypony
also we already have MoneroPulse domains spread out in various jurisdictions, for obvious reasons
-
fluffypony
eg. .no, .se, .fr, .ch
-
» moneromooo was wondering where .eg was for a bit :D
-
fluffypony
lol
-
fluffypony
moneroseeds also has .se / .ae.org / .ch / .li
-
fluffypony
so it's robust enough

fluffypony: For some reason I thought you were still behind the razor wire. Glad to see that's not the case - Maybe I'm operating on old news. Welcome home :)
