<ypavtv97lx:matrix.org> Hi, I have a concern about the security of my cold wallet that I generated years ago on a virtual machine (ubuntu) that was never connected to the Internet - Was there enough random data so the generated seed is not compromised due to low entropy ?
-
moneromooo
Well, "yes" and "no" seem to be the possible answers. That at least winnows out a lot of possible answers such as "green" and "scurrilous".
-
moneromooo
Unless someone here was there when you did, it's unlikely anyone knows.
-
moneromooo
But you could make a new wallet, ensuring everything is as you like, then move your monero to it.
-
moneromooo
Then your question is moot.
-
m-relay
<ypavtv97lx:matrix.org> So I shouldn't be concerned about someone generating my seed by brute-forcing due to too low entropy ?
-
m-relay
<ofrnxmr:monero.social> No. What mooo said was "if you are concerned: ensure concerns regarding entropy are addressed, then create a new wallet and move the funds from your old wallet"
-
m-relay
<ofrnxmr:monero.social> Mooo also said "you are either 100% sure that you did/didnot use low entropy when creating the wallet, or youre 100% sure that you dont know. In any case aside from "im 100% sure the wallet is good", you should be making sure you are 100% sure.
-
m-relay
<ofrnxmr:monero.social> tldr: youre clearly not confident, so common sense would dictate that you should create a new wallet and move the funds to it, as that is the only way to answer your question of "should i be concerned" with "you have no reason to be concerned".
-
moneromooo
I really said we do not know. It's either yes, no, but how can we know ? (yes, pedantically, it does depend on how much brute force power can be brough to bear against that wallet, but I was not feeling like pedantry I guess).
-
moneromooo
But, broadly, yes.
-
moneromooo
How they inferred "it's ok" frm what I said, I have no idea...

plowsof
Ack jeffro256, no sooner than the 14th
