syntheticbird: there are some hackerone related patches that are not yet merged and I would like to include them in the next release, that is the main slowdown at the moment

<syntheticbird:monero.social> ack

<ohchase:envs.net> What are the thoughts about nix in the community? I thought it might be useful to try and get a nix flake development environment added to the project for compiling locally easily. Looks like there is guix already for reproducible builds, so the nix flake would just be for local development
-
m-relay
<syntheticbird:monero.social> Nix community is a nest of crybabies. When they will stop acting like a cult over declarative paradigm, stop having governance drama every 3 weeks, and most importantly have a compelling reason against toolbox container, then i guess it will be interesting
-
m-relay
<syntheticbird:monero.social> oh obviously forgot to say the most important, they are a very small community of terminally online people (im not ranting they are proud of it), even Gentoo have more users. So a nix flake isn't really helpful
-
m-relay
<ohchase:envs.net> Noted, also have seen the community isn't very unified in technical roadmap and culture/politics(?)
-
m-relay
<ohchase:envs.net> I think nest of crybabies maybe a little harsh, but I get your point
-
m-relay
<syntheticbird:monero.social> damn i really need my glasses ohchase i thought you were ofrnxmr. I wouldn't have talked that harsh if it wasn't him. Sorry for that, obviously opinions are mine
-
m-relay
<ohchase:envs.net> absolutely no worries, I can be very forward with my own opinions as well
-
ofrnxmr
Np. Thanks self

m-relay
<syntheticbird:monero.social> you welcome

<ohchase:envs.net> Okay what am I doing wrong here, I went through all the seed nodes in
github.com/monero-project/monero/bl…ob/master/src/p2p/net_node.inl#L708
-
m-relay
<ohchase:envs.net> And did `dig 123.123.123.123:12345` , across testnet, stagenet, and mainnet I can't get any to return A records.
-
m-relay
<ohchase:envs.net> I tried with a seednode I found for btc (can link if okay) and did in fact get A records back.
-
moneromooo
Do you have a reason to believe such a record should exist ?
-
m-relay
<ohchase:envs.net> My understanding is they should exist because that is the purpose of a dns seed node unless I am mistaken
-
m-relay
<vtnerd:monero.social> You listed an IP address though?
-
m-relay
<vtnerd:monero.social> And all of the seeds are ips, no dns lookup us needed
-
m-relay
<vtnerd:monero.social> *is
-
moneromooo
An A record is used to slap a hostname/fqdn to an IP. Hosts hosting a seed node may do this, but this is irrelevant to their use as monero seed nodes.4
-
m-relay
<ohchase:envs.net> Okay that makes sense, but then for actual domain names (which would require a dns lookup) found in
github.com/monero-project/monero/bl…ae7ec344792/src/p2p/net_node.h#L301
-
m-relay
<ohchase:envs.net> None of those are returning me any A records either
-
m-relay
<vtnerd:monero.social> Afaik those haven't been active in a while, and should arguably be removed
-
m-relay
<ohchase:envs.net> Appropriate to open an issue for that? With the spy nodes being what I understand a significant threat currently, would it make sense to start a conversation on removing, or finding a new trusted custodian for seed nodes?
-

m-relay
<ohchase:envs.net> I opened an issue here
monero-project/monero #9695 , from my brief investigation all dns seed nodes are owned by one individual under one registrar and the default configuration for a main-net monerod daemon is to consider seed nodes first. I had decided this presents a worthwhile conversation

IIRC the seeds.moneropulse.* records are a backup, seed nodes are used first. Not 100% sure though.
-
m-relay
<ohchase:envs.net> from what I was reading those are for checkpoints
-
sech1
1) Seed nodes are not used for wallet RPC connections 2) They only matter when a new Monero node joins the network (i.e. it doesn't have a saved peer list)
