UkoeHB jberman you interested in doing a video overview aimed at n00bs on view tags this week?
-
jberman[m]
I'm in 👍

Rucknium: You've got a PM, in case you didn't notice.
-
UkoeHB
sure, however there isn't much to say since it is just a simple speedup for scanning
-
endogenic
lol

jberman[m]
We can talk about the siphash keccak battle royale in the PR that would be fun
-
jberman[m]
Plus x25519 vs ed25519 and how @knacc's idea informed thoughts to use x25519 in JAMTIS
-
jberman[m]
Maybe forcing discussion points^ ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
-
wernervasquez[m]
Is there a discussion on whether monero should ever use ristretto? If it ever were to happen, would doing it conjunction with another large change like jamtis/seraphis be good?
-
UkoeHB
jberman[m]: the target audience is 'n00bs' so idk
-
UkoeHB
wernervasquez[m]: someone brought it up a couple weeks ago I think...
-
UkoeHB
it would be a huge amount of work to implement and validate
-
UkoeHB
I think if you are starting from scratch, then ristretto is worthwhile. But if you already have an extensive crypto library in ed25519 (like us), then it's of uncertain value.

<UkoeHB> "jberman: the target audience is..." <- n00b here 😁 👋 i could start a reddit thread to get some talking points / questions from the people about view-tags if you want? I might be wrong but i would assume most want to know:... (full message at

> 1) when i open my wallet after a week, will it take me 30 minutes instead of an hour to send monero
-
jberman[m]
The perf improvement is ultimately going to depend on how scanning is implemented in the wallet being used, and on the machine. On my machine (core i7 1.80 GHz 32 GB RAM 4 cores 8 threads), with monero-wallet-cli scanning and a local node, I saw a max of 40%, but generally around a 30% improvement. So what would have normally taken my wallet 1hr (scanning never takes this long for me, not even starting from genesis), should
-
jberman[m]
probably be expected to take 42 mins. It's not like some crazy update that will make scanning disappear, just a nice speed-up
-
jberman[m]
2) do i need to do / change anything (do i need to make a new wallet to take advantage of the speedups)
-
jberman[m]
The wallet you're using will need to be updated to implement view tags (and Bulletproof+), so you'll need to update the software in preparation (like any other hard fork). Then should be good to go for when view tags are introduced in the next fork
-
jberman[m]
> 3) does it have any effect on privacy of transactions (open ended question)
-
jberman[m]
No
-
jberman[m]
> 4) 'time for synching/verifying monerod to set up a full node' is != 'synching your wallet' ( a raspberry pi will take 3 months to sync a full node etc)
-
jberman[m]
Right, view tags only improve wallet sync
-
plowsof[m]
Great answers thank you !. that info would be great content for giving noobs an overview of what view-tags mean for them. Maybe another point to clarify - only transactions after the update will be quicker? my wallet from block height 0 - before-view-tag-height will take the same amount of time to sync? I look forward to this episode, thanks jberman/koe/sgp_

Correct on both questions :)
