Just did some napkin math on arbitrary SSD cloud storage. Google offers $0.17/GB/month. That's $5.2E-6 for storing 256 bytes for 10 years. Average transaction fee is $0.055 for 2023. Let's say $0.06 if you're storing 256 bytes in tx_extra. Which implies a cost of $2.3E-4 for permanent storage on Monero.

So about a factor of 50x difference. Probably very few usecases need permanent arbitrary data storage beyond 10 years. Obviously this is very rough math, but maybe it's useful for some perspective on the relative costs of arbitrary data storage.
