<rottenwheel:unredacted.org> today, in random stuff you can use XMR for... a coffee bar where you may walk out with... a stray cat, in Vietnam? 🤔

<ofrnxmr:xmr.mx> over the past month or so, ive had some entity connecting to my xmrig-proxy port with 20 different monero addresses
-
m-relay
<ofrnxmr:xmr.mx> would be nice if they found a block ..
-
m-relay
<ofrnxmr:xmr.mx> Its strange that their xmrig is crawling ports. Maybe botnet looking for rpc ports to mine on? Accidentally hits xmrig-proxy port and doesnt immediately know the difference?
-
m-relay
<danielgreg:matrix.org> same, but I don't think it's someone crawling ports because if I'm not mistaken you can't identify what service runs on the port you decided to use. most of the addresses are primary.
-
m-relay
<danielgreg:matrix.org> I never paid attention to it because I think I shared my config somewhere in the far past, that's how I explain it.

<ofrnxmr:xmr.mx> I never shared my config
-
m-relay
<ofrnxmr:xmr.mx> All of the addresses are primary - 20 different ones.
-
m-relay
<ofrnxmr:xmr.mx> My port is not the default 3333 either
-
m-relay
<ofrnxmr:xmr.mx> But someone is using xmrig to connect to it for a short period if time, and this is 20 addresses over the course of >1 month

<321bob321:monero.social> Does any of this apply to monero p2p ?

<basses:matrix.org> Saw the message in the main MRL room about how hard it was to find contests for the FCMP++ Optimization Competition.
-
m-relay
<basses:matrix.org> I suggest some other ways (along with what has been done, as it has been fortunately successful (luckily)) Monero could market future competitions by doing the following:
-
m-relay
<basses:matrix.org> Note: these are some ideas that, according to my findings, weren't taken advantage of.
-
m-relay
<basses:matrix.org> * Repost in relevant r/ subreddits after posting in r/monero
-
m-relay
<basses:matrix.org> * People already working in MRL or Monero development in general can leverage their social accounts to repost or post about the competitions so their followings, which probably already have similar interests can see it.
-
m-relay
<basses:matrix.org> * Look into partnership with universities
-
m-relay
<basses:matrix.org> * Add some graphics to @monero twitter posts? Also, some hashtags like #cryptography etc..
-
m-relay
<basses:matrix.org> * Encourage more word of mouth and engagements from the community.
-
m-relay
<basses:matrix.org> followings -> followers*

<ack-j:matrix.org> rando: thanks for the suggestions! Marketing a competition that requires a niche skillset was difficult. I believe we did most of what you suggested with mixed results.
-
m-relay
<ack-j:matrix.org> I posted to r/rust (which got taken down) along with r/cryptocurrency which also got taken down but I know a mid who put it back up 3 or 4 times. Both were semi-failures but we had ~5k views across both posts.
-

<ack-j:matrix.org> I reached out to a few past MRL researchers that are no longer active as we didnt want to pull resources away from active developers. We got @monero to post about it a few times as well but that largely targets people who are in the community already.

<ack-j:matrix.org> I like the idea of reaching out to universities!
