br-m<dennis_tra:matrix.org> Hi folks, this is Dennis! I'm a computer network researcher and I'm just getting started looking into Monero. I'm the author of github.com/dennis-tra/nebula an agnostic network crawler. I've been able to crawl the entire Monero network and would like to discuss the results with people who are more knowledgeable than I am. Can someone point me to the right channels?
-
br-m<dennis_tra:matrix.org> Btw, I could find ~28k unique nodes in the network with the above tool. Are there any sites/dashboards I can compare this number with?
-
br-m<gingeropolous> this crawler finds ~17k monero.fail/map
-
br-m<gingeropolous> i forget where the code is for it
-
br-m<dennis_tra:matrix.org> oh interesting! Thanks for the pointer! When I mentioned 28k nodes, these are unique IP:Port combinations that were shared in the initial handshake (they don't necessary need to be online). I don't have the number of actually reachable nodes at hand right now (but I have the numbers). This could explain why monero.fail reports fewer nodes
-
br-m<gingeropolous> yeah, the monero network has a lot of spies and nodes with fake stuff... ah where's @rucknium:monero.social 's map...
-
br-m<gingeropolous> ah boom here it is: moneronet.info
-
br-m<dennis_tra:matrix.org> lol 40% suspected spy nodes?!
-
br-m<dennis_tra:matrix.org> okay, this is a great pointer! In the repo are even more channels where I may get in touch (e.g., #monero-research-lab). I'll also reach out there as I want to learn more about a the methodology that's being applied there.
