<chronos-v:matrix.org> Hey y'all, I've just set up XMRig (built from source) and am trying to get it to use my AMD GPU to mine via OpenCL but for some reason it gives me this:
-
m-relay
<chronos-v:matrix.org> ```
-
m-relay
<chronos-v:matrix.org> [2025-01-26 00:40:17.827] Error UNKNOWN_ERROR when calling clGetPlatformIDs for number of platforms.
-
m-relay
<chronos-v:matrix.org> [2025-01-26 00:40:17.827] No OpenCL platform found.
-
m-relay
<chronos-v:matrix.org> * OPENCL disabled (selected OpenCL platform NOT found)
-
m-relay
<chronos-v:matrix.org> ```
-
m-relay
<chronos-v:matrix.org> It seems a tad odd tbh
-
m-relay
<chronos-v:matrix.org> I'm using a Radeon RX 7900 GRE so it shouldn't be too old...
-
m-relay
<chronos-v:matrix.org> Also, running this on EndeavourOS

-
m-relay
<chronos-v:matrix.org> Thanks, what channel is that?
-
m-relay
-
m-relay
<chronos-v:matrix.org> It doesn't show that for me but I assume the address is #monero-mining
-
m-relay
-
m-relay
<mayhem69:matrix.org> Not sure if that will work for you I'm newer to matrix
-
m-relay
<chronos-v:matrix.org> Thank you
-
m-relay
<ofrnxmr:xmr.mx> You cant (or shouldnt) use gpu to mine xmr
-
m-relay
<chronos-v:matrix.org> Yeah it works, appreciate the help!
-
m-relay
<chronos-v:matrix.org> Oh? Why not?
-
m-relay
<chronos-v:matrix.org> Is it just not worth it?
-
m-relay
<ofrnxmr:xmr.mx> because its a cpu coin
-
m-relay
<mayhem69:matrix.org> agreed, your probably better off mining RVN or another GPU coin and swapping to XMR
-
Cindy
more specifically
-
Cindy
RandomX is more optimized towards CPUs than GPUs or ASICs
-
m-relay
<ofrnxmr:xmr.mx> Also, you need the proprietary amd drivers on linux to enable opencl iirc
-
m-relay
<chronos-v:matrix.org> Aaah got it
-
Cindy
you can mine monero with GPUs, just that it'll be slower
-
m-relay
<ofrnxmr:xmr.mx> Moneroocean.stream
-
m-relay
<chronos-v:matrix.org> Would mining a GPU coin and CPU coin on the same machine slow me down more than it'd be worth? Aha
-
m-relay
<ofrnxmr:xmr.mx> @cindy you CAN but i dont think ive been able to get it to work with xmrig
-
m-relay
<ofrnxmr:xmr.mx> No, doesnt slow down
-
m-relay
<ofrnxmr:xmr.mx> You can mine cpu xmr and gpu something else

<mark:chat.nicecrew.digital> Bro you're on a Monero channel, if we wanted to buy illegal products we would do it on a darknet market like everyone else, not via some dummy on an unsafe telegram channel because Telegram forces you to give a phone number to identify you to the state if needed.
-
m-relay
<darkhappyman:monero.social> what do you mean exactly ? Infrastructure & connection with monero ?
-
m-relay
<darkhappyman:monero.social> Yeah sure, I was projecting my question for green countries customers, hosting etc
-
m-relay
<darkhappyman:monero.social> Because we can see regulations of exchanges about monero and tornado cash devs going to prison ...
-
BlueyHealer
LOL it goes deeper than just the phone number. Telegram would be hard as hell to use anonymously also because they require the mobile app to register (and heard that they also detect emulators, although not researched so not sure) and can quickly suspend accounts created through Tor. I'd consider it impossible for an average person.
-
BlueyHealer
BTW what do they even use on DNMs for communication? I get it's probably something not centralized. Do they use their own on-site DMs with PGP?
-
m-relay
<darkhappyman:monero.social> exactly
-
BlueyHealer
ah
-
m-relay
<darkhappyman:monero.social> some people care less and switch to protonmail for communication, other go to simplex
-
BlueyHealer
I wonder if they trust the system that has them upload their private key to the cloud)
-
Cindy
i wonder if you trust a platform that forces you to use their web client and client-side encryption library
-
Cindy
which is btw, vulnerable to side-channel attacks due to the fact it's written in JS
-
BlueyHealer
Well they do have a "bridge" that allows using a normal client... But it requires a paid subscription.
-
Cindy
you can't fix these side-channel attacks because there are no constant-time operations in javascript
-
BlueyHealer
Also yeah, can't imagine trusting a web client for encryption unless maybe it's hosted in my home.
-
Cindy
and JIT optimizations heavily affect whatever technique you try to do to achieve constant-time
-
BlueyHealer
damn you just reminded me to read more on what JIT impacts but I have an exam to prepare to :(
-
Cindy
BlueyHealer: if your threat model isn't quite serious, protonmail's web client is fine
-
Cindy
but if your threat model includes attackers analyizing CPU timings to determine secret data
-
Cindy
it is off the table
-
Cindy
analyzing*
-
Cindy
also good luck on your exam
-
BlueyHealer
No, I'm just still concerned with downloading the whole application every time. And them having my private key.
-
BlueyHealer
Nah lol side channels are not a concern, I was thinking of something easier.
-
m-relay
<imprevisto:matrix.org> there's also a big space between cindy's two models
-
Cindy
yes
-
Cindy
BlueyHealer: well, that's also a thing
-
m-relay
<imprevisto:matrix.org> nod, tip hat
-
Cindy
browsers don't have much integrity checks
-
BlueyHealer
Also how easy it would be to target a malicious update because the whole code is shipped to every logged-in user every time
-
Cindy
there is for subresources, but those are embedded in the HTML, which the server can modify
-
BlueyHealer
Cindy, are there ways to integrity-check at all btw? That could help.
-
Cindy
i know someone who made a web extension that checks the PGP signature in a HTML file with the HTML file itself
-
Cindy
and displays a little red shield in the URL bar if it's invalid
-
Cindy
or a green one if it's valid
-
Cindy
that's the closest i've seen
-
BlueyHealer
PGP? Does the whole webapp code get signed?
-
Cindy
only the HTML file
-
m-relay
<imprevisto:matrix.org> bluey you're talking about using PGP over email?
-
Cindy
ideally the HTML file should also include SRI checksums for all subresources (scripts, stylesheets, etc.)
-
Cindy
-
m-relay
<imprevisto:matrix.org> if the PGP is handled by a server, it's already not ideal
-
m-relay
<imprevisto:matrix.org> cool @Cindy
-
BlueyHealer
Yeah, that part makes me uneasy! In such a case, I'd prefer to encrypt with a command and then copypaste.
-
BlueyHealer
Cindy, HTML? And what about the JS in it?
-
m-relay
<imprevisto:matrix.org> interesting idea for the plugin, it's a little stale, but I like the basic idea of it
-
BlueyHealer
But yeah, didn't know about such an extension, that's neat.
-
Cindy
if it's inline, it'll already be within the HTML file
-
Cindy
if it's external, you'll have to use SRI checksums for the <script> tag
-
Cindy
which the browser handles and checks
-
BlueyHealer
Yeah - I just don't know how it is in Protonmail
-
m-relay
<imprevisto:matrix.org> bluey there are some other PGP gotchas too, but if you generate an encrypted message into a file and copy-paste the whole block then the receiver will at least get the encrypted message with integrity
-
Cindy
webcrypto makes me sad
-
Cindy
it's a big opportunity for web devs to stop implementing cryptography algorithms themselves in javascript
-
m-relay
<imprevisto:matrix.org> (and the server or other possible people in the middle will only have the cyphertext)
-
Cindy
but the W3C people have been super slow to actually put in modern crptography algorithms that matter
-
m-relay
<imprevisto:matrix.org> ..and I would not recommend proton in general...
-
m-relay
<imprevisto:matrix.org> TLS is pretty good it seems, though serving 3rd party scripts and the like with a huge creaky spaghetti code monster seems to be pretty normal
-
m-relay
<imprevisto:matrix.org> CA has its own problems too ofc
-
BlueyHealer
I use Noscript for the third-party stuff
-
m-relay
<imprevisto:matrix.org> that
-
m-relay
<imprevisto:matrix.org> is a good step bluey IMO
-
BlueyHealer
I know Ublock can do it but Noscript is more convenient.
-
Cindy
ublock is pretty powerful
-
Cindy
if you know how to write filters
-
BlueyHealer
True. I mean that toggling everything was more convenient in Noscript for me.
-
Cindy
makes sense
-
Cindy
i can just quickly write something like *$3p,script,domain=protonmail.com off the top of my head
-
BlueyHealer
ye
-
BlueyHealer
I am yet to check if Noscript prevents reaching the domain entirely if you deny loading anything from it. From a cursory glance seems so.
-
m-relay
<imprevisto:matrix.org> Cindy do you have any insight into W3C matters?
-
Cindy
whoops, internet failure
-
Cindy
as soon as i sent that message

<mr_x_tcv:matrix.org> Since Monero has developers and researchers in the USA, can anything be done to add it to CoinGecko's Made In the USA list?

also lol, how tf are you gonna report taxes on monero
-
m-relay
<elongated:matrix.org> Like any other crypto
-
m-relay
<syntheticbird:monero.social> you guys have to report?

-
m-relay
<siren:kernal.eu> I'm working on the annual report now, huge pain in the ass logging swaps from XMR and everything since Kraken delisted. Do you all use automated software?

i'm glad i live in a place where cryptocurrencies are banned

Cindy
i don't have to report it :P

<ohchase:envs.net> What confuses the fuck out of me, is so say I buy monero at $100 years ago and then withdraw that and self custody it. Now, I next year begin buying monero at $150 and doing swing trading(?) so I just set a sell order for something high like $180 and then that hits randomly next month, and then I again set a buy order low at $150 and hope that also hits eventually. So I'm realizin<clipped message>
-
m-relay
<ohchase:envs.net> g profit and that makes sense all in my app. But here's where it gets weird; did I realize profit on a $150 cost or is it on me to average the $100 stuff I self custody?
-
m-relay
<plowsof:matrix.org> book an appointment with a local financial adviser
-
m-relay
<ohchase:envs.net> ugh
-
m-relay
<ohchase:envs.net> the cost of the financial advisor is gonna far out weigh any of my profits
-
m-relay
-
m-relay
<elongated:matrix.org> Usually it’s first in first out, so it would be on 100
-
m-relay
<elongated:matrix.org> But contact a financial advisor
-
m-relay
<siren:kernal.eu> That's stupid, what's there to account for in a local wallet balance? I need a tool that integrates with Kraken and ChangeNOW.
-
m-relay
<siren:kernal.eu> I'll most likely give this one a go, hopefully the accountant won't charge me thousands of euros

anelli
having to report crypto sounds counter-intuitive
-
anelli
at least monero
-
BlueyHealer
Cindy, how tf can you ban them? You mean disallowed to be accepted as payment?
-
Cindy
if the government knows you use cryptocurrencies
-
Cindy
you get fined upwards to millions of dollars
-
Cindy
or more
-
BlueyHealer
oh
-
Cindy
so don't tell
-
BlueyHealer
Does that get enforced well? In some places even VPNs are banned yet people use things like XRay...
-
BlueyHealer
Hope your opsec is good then!

Cindy
not really

Cindy
not unless you buy a lambo with bitcoin lol

i finally got monero and monero-cpp to compile in meson
-
Cindy
aftr patching out i18n due to build system issues
-
Cindy
not like i needed it since i was only gonna use monero for its libraries than its clients/wallet
-
Cindy
(mixing meson and cmake is sometimes hell)
