unrelated question: i read that you can only use your secret-view-key to scan for *incoming* transactions to the address. does this mean that if i lose history of outgoing transactions from that address, then i won't be able to calculate its balance anymore?

chiselfuse: Yes, if you don't have the outputs and key images and you've made a outgoing transaction, then the balance will be very inaccurate

You need the outputs and key images to correct the balance from a view-only wallet

But don't worry, Carrot will fix this issue so you don't have to deal with it in the long term

the docs only detail how the private view key for subaddresses is calculated

actually, i think they only detail how *public* view and spend keys for subaddresses are calculated

and nothing about private keys

do you use subaddresses only for receiving and the main one for sending funds from main and sub addresses?

you can only scan outputs, and with the spend private key, you can derive the key image.

then you find if any input on a chain tx spends that key image

note wallets also do a self-send of change or 0.0 XMR so they can detect the incoming tx

(otherwise they have to ask the daemon for the existence of the key image in the chain)

subaddresses do have a "secret" extension, but this must be combined with the proper secret spend key to be able to derive the private key to spend, see git.gammaspectra.live/P2Pool/consen…ro/address/cryptonote/subaddress.go
