<sidalsolgun:nope.chat> windows just locked me out of my PC today
-
br-m
<sidalsolgun:nope.chat> twice
-
br-m
<sidalsolgun:nope.chat> when I entered the correct pin, it forced me to reset it via email because there was an error (with an error code)
-
br-m
<sidalsolgun:nope.chat> first time I experinced this with winzort so, just another reason to buy a laptop for linux only next time
-
br-m
<ravfx:xmr.mx> why do you signing with crosoft?
-
br-m
<ravfx:xmr.mx> local account exist
-
br-m
<sidalsolgun:nope.chat> I use microsoft store too, I also got a gaming laptop which came with 3 months of free gamepass
-
br-m
<ravfx:xmr.mx> ooh, just format and install windows LTSC (if you want windows)
-
br-m
<ravfx:xmr.mx> forget the store
-
br-m
<ravfx:xmr.mx> except if you like being controlled by microsoft
-
br-m
<sidalsolgun:nope.chat> I don't want windows but shitty Canadian government doesn't defend Linux users
-
br-m
<ravfx:xmr.mx> LTSC don't come with the store, you even have to patch the registry so games and shit that look for the store stop looking for thing that don't exist
-
br-m
<ravfx:xmr.mx> What the Canadian cartal should devend linux user. Why do you want to rely on the state to guide you in what OS you should use. Ignore the state and use tf what you are more confortable with
-
br-m
<sidalsolgun:nope.chat> I would like to use secureblue KDE so bad but yeah... Linux also sucks with shitty lazyass developers like go look at flathub, year 2026 and they still ship software with X11 which doesn't work on secureblue
-
br-m
<ravfx:xmr.mx> @sidalsolgun:nope.chat: yeah sure but that won't be fixed anytime soon lol
-
br-m
<ravfx:xmr.mx> Fragmentation got it
-
br-m
<sidalsolgun:nope.chat> they don't even bother verifying their apps on flathub, and I got banned from flathub matrix room after pointing out these serious security issues. the moderator also insulted me with disgusting words.
-
br-m
<sidalsolgun:nope.chat> @ravfx:xmr.mx: they force u to use shitty software like "lockdown browser"
-
br-m
<ravfx:xmr.mx> @sidalsolgun:nope.chat: what? Canada?
-
br-m
<sidalsolgun:nope.chat> Canadian colleges
-
br-m
<ravfx:xmr.mx> they can't force you to use anything yet...
-
br-m
<ravfx:xmr.mx> OH, I see...
-
br-m
<ravfx:xmr.mx> like domain equivalent or something, like "enterprise" controlled infra
-
br-m
<ravfx:xmr.mx> So it's even your computer or no
-
br-m
<sidalsolgun:nope.chat> KDE Plasma is the flagship desktop like it mogs macOS and winzort but I can't use it...
-
br-m
<sidalsolgun:nope.chat> capitalism has to die
-
br-m
<ravfx:xmr.mx> KDE is probably the most noob friendly desktop there is, it's also the most well integrated option afaik
-
br-m
<sidalsolgun:nope.chat> it's my own personal pc
-
br-m
<sidalsolgun:nope.chat> but it doesn't feel like my own personal pc thx to being forced to use what others tell me
-
br-m
<ravfx:xmr.mx> So how they can force you then, do they inspect your PC or something?
-
br-m
<sidalsolgun:nope.chat> @ravfx:xmr.mx: nah gnome is the best for that, I use KDE for featuremaxxing
-
br-m
<ravfx:xmr.mx> Imo I do find gnome garbage tier (since version 3.x
-
br-m
<ravfx:xmr.mx> taste and colors 😂
-
br-m
<sidalsolgun:nope.chat> @ravfx:xmr.mx: for example, for exams they use lockdown browser and this works on only winzort and macos
-
br-m
<ravfx:xmr.mx> oh yeah, they don't want you to cheat, but they still let you use computer
-
br-m
<sidalsolgun:nope.chat> @ravfx:xmr.mx: it still has the three finger gesture, and simple asf
-
br-m
<ravfx:xmr.mx> I remember when I was doing exams, we used to use a thing called paper
-
br-m
<ravfx:xmr.mx> it worked really well
-
br-m
<ravfx:xmr.mx> and did not need ACL nor DRM
-
br-m
<sidalsolgun:nope.chat> kek
-
br-m
<sidalsolgun:nope.chat>
secureblue.dev/images
-
br-m
<sidalsolgun:nope.chat> GNOME is also the only one that has thumbnail sandboxing
-
br-m
<slowbeardigger:matrix.org> Devuan
-
br-m
<slowbeardigger:matrix.org> use devuan
-
br-m
<sidalsolgun:nope.chat> for getting hacked easily? lol
-
br-m
<sidalsolgun:nope.chat> nothing can beat secureblue
-
br-m
<sidalsolgun:nope.chat> trust information and science, not fear
-
oblivious12
disabling thumbnailers and tracker systemd service should literally be the first thing you do on a fresh GNOME install, or any DE for that matter
-
oblivious12
-
oblivious12
just a PSA because probably not a lot people know that their DE most likely touches all the shit they download from the internet by default
-
br-m
<sidalsolgun:nope.chat> thanks to AI, Linux will be targeted even more imo, and everyone has to use hardened OS
-
br-m
<sidalsolgun:nope.chat> forget the days u were using arch/debian/fedora etc.
-
oblivious12
it's going to be a bloodbath
-
br-m
<sidalsolgun:nope.chat> @sidalsolgun:nope.chat: these don't even come with firewall hardened by default let alone other stuff LMFAO
-
br-m
<ravfx:xmr.mx> only malware protection is clamav 😂
-
br-m
<ravfx:xmr.mx> Wait, it's only for mail servers!
-
oblivious12
linux is quickly going to turn into the most unsafe OS due to its massive fragmentation, non-existent desktop market share isn't going to help anymore
-
br-m
<ravfx:xmr.mx> Linux(desktop) only malware defence was that it was not worth the time/money ratio to make malware for it
-
oblivious12
(let's hope this is just my schizo rambling and nothing will happen in reality)
-
br-m
<ravfx:xmr.mx> not that the evengilist are getting people to switch it's making it worth it especially thanks to the last of proper malware protection. Fortunately linux lack compatibility with linux so it help a little on that side, assuming they don't directly fsck with your distribution packages
-
br-m
<siren:kernal.eu> @openmonerosux:matrix.org: @bawdyanarchist:matrix.org
-
oblivious12
@ravfx that kinda applies to every branch of security: "meh, you're not gonna be attacked by [some complicated attack vector] because only a nation-state attacker would have resources and sophistication required to pull that off"
-
oblivious12
"nation-state attacker" is very rapidly turning into "a kid from indonesia with a $20 kimi subscription"
-
br-m
<ravfx:xmr.mx> oblivious12: I meant, it's not worth the time to target a desktop OS if there is less than 1% that are using the thing, especially that your binary might not even run on the target thanks to the fragmentation.
-
br-m
<ravfx:xmr.mx> But yeah, now that there is more and more user, and that clankers are cheap enough, it kinda make it worth it
-
br-m
<ravfx:xmr.mx> but i'm still pretty sure that if the user ratio was still under 1%, people would not bother wasting 20$ on kimi for that
-
br-m
<ravfx:xmr.mx> especially that this 1% was fragmented and there is no garantie that your binaries would run on all of theses system
-
br-m
<ravfx:xmr.mx> The more user on the platform, the more it's worth spending time attacking it
-
oblivious12
assuming average PC is 5 kH/s, infecting less than 5 computers would already be profitable after a month
-
br-m
<ravfx:xmr.mx> average PC are less than that
-
br-m
<ravfx:xmr.mx> and if you floor them some user will find there is something sus with there PC. except if you take the time to drop CPU usage if the user want to use the CPU
-
oblivious12
you won't believe what `--pause-on-active` does
-
Bunnyh
what email server would you recommend
-
Bunnyh
oblivious12: I'm using Debian on all my machines, unstable on my main rig, and I'm a bit wary of what the new glycin loaders are doing
-
Bunnyh
they are enforcing all software to use bubblewrap to render images
-
Bunnyh
I can envision later that system being used to casually scan all images for CSAM or something
-
Bunnyh
besides that, it results in ugly process spam
-
Bunnyh
I normally have very compact process lists, and noticed it easily that way
-
Bunnyh
the impact on how bloated ps aux output looked was easily noticed
-
Bunnyh
-
Bunnyh
"making things safer" is always how we make them worse
-
Bunnyh
hell, if I want my software to just render a png as directly as possible, I don't want a safety nerd complicating the process not even a tiny bit
-
Bunnyh
I use Xfce4 & lightdm, trimmed down as much as possible, the whole system is just like 20 processes when idling on the desktop, but now just opening a task manager or something slams 20 bubblewraps all around the place
-
Bunnyh
fuck that, that's an idea made by someone who wraps all their sofas in plastic so they don't get dirty. I hate those kind of people, I want to sit on my sofas and if they get dirty that's life.
-
Bunnyh
I bet the plastic just makes their sofas grow mold ultimately
-
oblivious12
-
Bunnyh
omg :D good stuff for making food
-
Bunnyh
my 10y old floor has a decent amount of craters by now, Todd would have a meltdown looking at this place
-
Bunnyh
my ex gf was constantly spilling water and the boards are creaking at the paths she used to walk with her glass :X
-
Bunnyh
should have bubblewrapped the whole place! Todd was right
-
br-m
<pw:xmr.mx> hooefully she wasn't pissing herself and saying she spilled water
-
br-m
<sidalsolgun:nope.chat> %99 of Linux is already fucked. Secureblue, tails, qubes etc. these are doing very well though. > <oblivious12> linux is quickly going to turn into the most unsafe OS due to its massive fragmentation, non-existent desktop market share isn't going to help anymore
-
br-m
<sidalsolgun:nope.chat> When someone says "I'm using Linux" I always assume they're just delusional mainstream distro user or anti-systemd average 4chan user or digdeeper reader
-
br-m
<sidalsolgun:nope.chat> Secureblue is not just more secure but also more usable than other distros.
-
Bunnyh
I still use Debian, and am one of the few people who voluntarily adopted systemd before it was forced on anybody, it's been fun to watch all the rage from this perspective
-
Bunnyh
I was like "yeah, let's try this, I hate this init script mess" and it's been working great for over a decade in countless systems I managed
-
Bunnyh
I curate the installed packages regularly, just apt remove alphabetically tabcomplete and try to remove everything, figure out dependencies and what the things are that way
-
Bunnyh
but yeah I fear Debian might not stay as good as its been
-
Bunnyh
my boss at work didn't believe I was doing that package vetting, he thought it was exaggerating and nobody could really do that :D
-
Bunnyh
there are only like 500 packages you need to have in a server or 1000-1500 on a desktop, is that too many things to understand??
-
Bunnyh
does secureblue have a long history of good security practices?
-
Bunnyh
right, launcheds in 2024. that is not really enough to prove worthiness even if they really were perfect
-
Bunnyh
many people will require the years of proof
-
Bunnyh
tails appears to have a more respectable number of years
-
br-m
<sidalsolgun:nope.chat> Bunnyh: No.
-
br-m
<sidalsolgun:nope.chat> Matrix is also full of censorship btw.
-
br-m
<sidalsolgun:nope.chat> Telegram is the only censorship-resistant platform.
-
br-m
<sidalsolgun:nope.chat> Signal + Telegram let's say.
-
br-m
<sidalsolgun:nope.chat> I got banned from all the spaces for saying the truth also, especially LGBT ones. The room I created was deleted too because they're simply working for MOSSAD/CIA.
-
br-m
<sidalsolgun:nope.chat> @sidalsolgun:nope.chat: Not sure how is XMPP though, do they ban "right wingers"?
-
br-m
<monerobull:matrix.org> You probably just got banned for off topic yapping
-
DataHoarder
why is #monero being #monero-offtopic today
-
br-m
<xxxb:magdeburg.jetzt> Telegram is not even encrypted. > <@sidalsolgun:nope.chat> Telegram is the only censorship-resistant platform.
-
br-m
<17lifers:mikuplushfarm.ovh> (its optional)
-
br-m
<ofrnxmr> saying tg is censorship resistant is hilarious
-
br-m
<ofrnxmr> As if telegram doesnt have mods / room admins etc
-
br-m
<gan:sofalounge.club> It is - not, beside vulnerabilities at the start (MTProto 1.0 fiasco), and the current tracking exploit, Telegram always enforced requests of the states > <@sidalsolgun:nope.chat> Telegram is the only censorship-resistant platform.
-
br-m
<ofrnxmr> DataHoarder: Also this
-
br-m
<plowsof:matrix.org> i was banned from everywhere and im spamming offtopic in this room too
-
br-m
<syntheticbird> > rant about linux distro security > <@sidalsolgun:nope.chat> %99 of Linux is already fucked. Secureblue, tails, qubes etc. these are doing very well though.
-
br-m
<syntheticbird> > "securebue is doing very well though"
-
br-m
<syntheticbird> nice try fed
-
BlueyHealer
<ofrnxmr> saying tg is censorship resistant is hilarious <- The sum of the person's statements makes me pretty convinced that's a troll.
-
alem
does anyone here know where i can purchase a domain with monero?
-
br-m
-
br-m
<pw:xmr.mx> alem: sure
1984.hosting accepts moner

just to chip in, i was a linux hater, could not stand it more then a few days, went back to win after a few days but now been rocking CachyOS for almost a year. It has matured to the point i can actually be productive, play games and now i feel i own my pc. Sense of freedom. Before i was forced into update and AI crap and braking windblows updates..now it just works!
