Hello everyone! I have a spare old laptop (200 H/s). I was wondering if mining with it (solo/p2pool) would help the network in any way, given that I will probably never mine a single block... I understand that the algorithm attempts to be egalitarian, but isn't there a minimum hardware requirement or H/s, so as not to be a waste of time/energy?
-
ofrnxmr[m]
1. P2pool
-
ofrnxmr[m]
2. Do you mind spending money to support the network? (Mining a net loss)
-
nioc
waste of energy would be quantified by hash/watt and your cost of electricity
-
merope
Honestly, it's not even worth your time. You would be earning less than $0.50/month and spending much more than that in electricity. As for helping the network, you would be adding 200 H/s to 3,000,000,000 H/s... you be the judge :D
-
nantuk[m]
I don't mind spending money, my intention is to support the network. But I want to understand how those 200 H/s would help in any way, given that I will probably never mine a block
-
nioc
most efficient CPU is a modern ryzen at 100 H/W and I can no longer mine profitably with recent increases in elec
-
ofrnxmr[m]
Older hardware is less efficient as well.
-
ofrnxmr[m]
Spare android phone / tablet / tv box laying around?
-
nantuk[m]
merope: I see lol that's my point
-
plowsof[m]
pools.xmr.wiki who are the based miners on cryptonote .social
-
plowsof[m]
507 miners with a total hash of...
-
ofrnxmr[m]
It *does* help right now imo. Maybe not the network as a whole, but helps p2pools grow, both in peers and relatively low hr.
-
ofrnxmr[m]
Because p2pool hr is still low.
-
merope
Pool hashrate doesn't really matter much, from the pov of the miner
-
ofrnxmr[m]
Im referring to the size of p2pool, peers and overall hr on the pool
-
merope
And 200 H/s would hardly help the pools, even p2pool-mini
-
merope
Yeah, me too
-
plowsof[m]
what if 50 people with 200H/s felt they where all useless? :(
-
plowsof[m]
and didnt bother :'(
-
merope
Then p2pool-mini would be missing out on a 0.05-0.1% hashrate bump
-
ofrnxmr[m]
I have multiple 30hr miners mining..
-
ofrnxmr[m]
An my old laptop is a waste of energy at 300h/s but 10 phones at 30-300 works great.
-
merope
(given that it oscillates between 10 and 20 MH/s most of the time)
-
plowsof[m]
we need a safe space for low hash miners
-
plowsof[m]
no judgement zone
-
merope
--> p2pool-mini :D
-
ofrnxmr[m]
Is it possible to spin up a p2pool wiry a custom pplns?
-
ofrnxmr[m]
With*
-
merope
possible, sure
-
merope
why would you want to, though?
-
ofrnxmr[m]
Longer. For low hr miners
-
plowsof[m]
raspberry pis only pool
-
merope
Doesn't really matter, in the long run. Might take you a week or two to find a share, but the average income stays the same
-
merope
And the parameters of p2pool were chosen such that the minimum reward is above the minimum transaction fee
-
nantuk[m]
Well, maybe it will be more helpful to setup a public full node with it (and why not enable mining if it doesn't hurt). The wallet GUI mining section says "every little bit helps", that's why I was wondering if it would REALLY help
-
merope
Otherwise you would end up collecting a ton of dust outputs in the wallet, which you could not spend individually
-
ofrnxmr[m]
Just brainstorming.
-
merope
nantuk[m]: Strictly speaking, it *does* help... The question is "how much", and "is it worth it"? In my personal opinion, those hashrates are so low that they're not even worth the time to set them up
-
-
merope
Not even from a profit perspective, but from a pure "is this a good use of my time" pov
-
ofrnxmr[m]
^^ what endor said
-
ofrnxmr[m]
But only if were referring to computers or power suckers
-
merope
Or to put it it a nicer way: there are other things that you could do with that time and resources that would help yourself and the network significantly more
-
ofrnxmr[m]
If you have unused phones sitting in some drawer somewhere rent free.. well they are profitable and negligible power
-
ofrnxmr[m]
Proxy enough of them together and you've for ryzen 3600 speeds at lower power
-
merope
Make sure you remove the lithium batteries though - they are a big fire hazard, especially when under 24/7 load + heat (and phones are notorious for their bad cooling)
-
ofrnxmr[m]
6+ months of constant mining on half cores, np
-
ofrnxmr[m]
And heat is minimal. Going flat out I can hit 700h/s but gets extremely hot fast.
-
nantuk[m]
Thanks ;) I'll probably set it up just to learn about it

sorry the 255 miner payout - that means that 255 based chads worked together to mine 1 block

what about reemuru who abandoned the dev guides CCS because he 'made it work locally with docker' :(

Plowsof for ceo
-
w[m]
Also, wow people tip and tip hard.
-
Rucknium[m]
From the perspective of a user, WaaS works like this:
-
Rucknium[m]
1) Install the WaaS Docker image on a VPS
-
Rucknium[m]
2) Go through a terminal-based setup wizard, giving the XMR/WOW view keys and BTC/BCH XPUBs so that the WaaS can generate new addresses. No private spend keys are given to the server unless you ask it t generate the wallet for you.
-
Rucknium[m]
3) Write descriptions of the wishes and set the goal amounts.
-
Rucknium[m]
4) Make your website configuration point to the Docker instance
-
Rucknium[m]
5) When one of your wishes is 100% funded, you have to deliver!
-
ofrnxmr[m]
Underrated.
-
plowsof[m]
the 'usd' amount adjusts in real time - but when the wish is fully funded - it is frozen - and it is up to you to get the funds into whatever currency you need
-
plowsof[m]
it is for people who you trust already though, who have shown evidence of previous work. The CCS and its 'custodial' nature still has its place
-
plowsof[m]
but ofc we have problems with the 'permission ed' aspect , which works great sometimes.. and others not
-
Rucknium[m]
Right. The donations go to your wallet immediately. There is no "release" of funds with milestones or things like that.
-
w[m]
Considering Spiro CCS. Should be ideal
-
w[m]
Spiro wants to send the money to someone else in afganistan. Someone they trust, but we dont.
-
w[m]
Its a small amount, so those who trust and were willing to help spiro should have no problem funding it.
-
w[m]
Someone they have vetted* but we have not*
-
w[m]
So the proposal relies on your believe that Spiro will deliver.
-
w[m]
After a successful run on waas id imagine Spiro would have less friction trying to do another CCS. (Will have dilivered and earned trust)
-
ofrnxmr[m]
Lets hope Spiro makes to the the meeting.

Pinging spirobel:

-
plowsof[m]
thanks moo
-
ofrnxmr[m]
-
plowsof[m]
Amazing thanks!
-
plowsof[m]
Not sure how the 5xmr bounty is progressing to 'fix the bounties site' ~ but the wheels are in motion and a c# implementation was made with alot of improvements [here](
reddit.com/r/Monero/comments/upi39o/monero_bounties_service_rewrite)
-
plowsof[m]
we wouldn't have had viewtags implemented for the next HF if it wasn't for the bounties site
-
plowsof[m]
can also touch on the community node list. i set up a little experiment and made 2500~ transactions from around 800 nodes, with no high fees found
-
plowsof[m]
sech1 suggests that it is possible an attacker can perform a 'pop up shop' attack where they rent hash power , throw a malicious node up , and mine the block containing the high fee
-
plowsof[m]
a community node list would prevent this
-
plowsof[m]
for simple mode gui users
-
monerobull[m]
plowsof[m]: I read about the malicious node just not broadcasting the transaction until he mines the high fee block himself, could that actually work?
-
ofrnxmr[m]
I believe so.
-
monerobull[m]
That way they are WAY more likely to benefit from the high fees
-
plowsof[m]
interesting, ill follow that up and ask sech about it

plowsof[m]

-
plowsof[m]
dont worry - they won't work after the HF
-
monerobull[m]
Hardfork will break the gateway?
-
plowsof[m]
actually no, its using xmrchain and / or monero wallet rpc, ignore that
-
plowsof[m]
ill make sure he hears about that bug thanks
-
monerobull[m]
It's the link to xmrchain to view the transaction you just made.

45 USD/hour? You should re-consider your hourly rate based on how much Monero core developers are paid to work on code that really matters. There is no guarantee neither reference that you are producing code not even on similar level.

i still have the seed in my google drive, dont worry /s
-
chesterfield[m]
In all honesty, if someone made a nice little web app that could run locally to convert Trezor / ledger seeds to 25 word Monero seeds, that would be killer
-
plowsof[m]
theres a script to get the monero viewkey from ram too

chesterfield[m]
<olowo[m]> "My research and enthusiasm about..." <- Welcome

plowsof[m]

chesterfield[m]
Whatโs the status on sidekick

chesterfield[m]

-
plowsof[m]

plowsof[m]
chesterfield[m]: anhdres ๐ฅน

monerobull[m]

<chesterfield[m]> "In all honesty, if someone..." <-
github.com/LedgerHQ/app-monero/tree/master/tools/python perhaps?
-
plowsof[m]
so the 'offline' python version could be a docker thing ๐ค
-
plowsof[m]
-
plowsof[m]
docker python flask front end thingy would do it though
