Has there been cases of users "double spending" on previous hard forks?

For example some exchange not updating their nodes, thus getting exploited by users sending them "old" funds

I'd wager that as "your own fault"

Everyone got plenty of time to upgrade their wallets/nodes

I guess everyone will be on the hunt that day 😆

People reduce their own privacy when they do that. There are a few papers on MoneroResearch.info about it.

MoneroV kinda did that, since they didn't bother with replay protection (and also stole the wallet seed of the fools who fell for it)

No for both questions

You'll need a p2pool node though those are rather lightweight

And a public node that supports zmq (or zqm, not sure what it's called)

Has anyone done performance comparisons of p2pool mining with a local vs remote node? I would guess that the connection latency between the mining machine and the remote monerod would cause some problems.

What really matters is the latency of the full path from xmrig to monerod

assuming that monerod is well connected to other nodes
