jeffro256[m]
> sech1 well that's what i mean, you have to set it. instead of there being an allow remote rpc option
-
jeffro256[m]
The main reason that monerod binds to 127.0.0.1 instead of 0.0.0.0 by default is that opening up requests from all IPs is bad opsec since some RPC commands can change the behavior of your node (unrestricted RPC)
-
NorrinRadd
no, that part is fine
-
NorrinRadd
when you do want to accept remote connections, it's kind of weird you have to set an ip. it's good that it allows network splitting, but most people aren't going to need that. there should be an option to just accept remote connections
-
NorrinRadd
i also doubt most users know 0.0.0.0 means all ips
-
NorrinRadd
and if you don't know that, they could be binding to dynamic ips that they'll have to change often
-
NorrinRadd
after you bind the zmq ip, is there some additional option needed to get it to actually serve zmq requests?
-
NorrinRadd
i've never been able to get a zmq response
-
plowsof
it makes the user RTFM / and its opt-in
-
NorrinRadd
"no, that part is fine"
-
NorrinRadd
opt-in is not the issue
-
NorrinRadd
i give up
-
jeffro256[m]
Ah okay are you saying there should be a one --allow-external-connections-on-everything-default-settings-please
-
NorrinRadd
yeah most apps that listen on a port don't force you to answer what ip it should listen on. sshd will just listen. znc will just listen.
-
NorrinRadd
i'm going afk. bbl
-
plowsof
i think most cryptos make you set an ip (atleast btc does) ☹️
-
ofrnxmr[m]
Says he wants potatos, was given potatoes 🤷♂️
-
ofrnxmr[m]
`rpc-restricted-bind-ip 0.0.0.0`
-
ofrnxmr[m]
Or add `rpc-restricted-bind-ip=0.0.0.0` to your config
-
ofrnxmr[m]
s/`/`--/
-
DanIsnotthemanBr
but wouldn't you want to restrict what it listens on? and not just blanket listen to everything.
-
NorrinRadd
DanIsnotthemanBr how many people do you know that have multiple IPs at any one time. that's not the norm. i've done that 1 time long term in my life and it was when i was sysadmin of a lab that needed a unique router (ipf on bsd). sure, if you want to bind specifically, that can be an option also. but why the default?
-
sech1
just run a VPN and you will already have 2 IPs
-
sech1
plus IPv6 stuff that is turned on by default in Windows
-
sech1
Virtual machines add more network interfaces and IPs
-
sech1
sometimes you have ethernet cable and wi-fi adapter connect to different networks
-
sech1
and million other reasons you can have more than one IP
-
DanIsnotthemanBr
<NorrinRadd> "Dan (Is not the man & Braxman..." <- ok i get you. your asking why its default to listen all and not the ip on the nic that that the pc its on. ie 127.0.0.1
-
DanIsnotthemanBr
s/that//
-
ofrnxmr[m]
Other way around
-
ofrnxmr[m]
He's asking why unencrypted, unrestricted, passwordless rpc bind only listens on 127.0.0.1 by default.
-
ofrnxmr[m]
.. because that is the way it should be
-
DanIsnotthemanBr
Ahh.. i was wondering why they mentioned ssh listening.
-
ssstyccdfhju2356
hi, is it profitable to mine xmr? do i need a GPU or is a CPU enough? and how much xmr can i mine per day?
-
sech1
CPU
-
sech1
0.0005-0.001 XMR/day
-
sech1
this is how much an average 6-core Ryzen can mine

<NorrinRadd> "opt-in is not the issue" <- .
-
plowsof
so the issue is wanting a jeffros flag of "--allow-external-connections-on-everything-default-settings-please" , but most users search for a monerod.conf / guide for hosting a public node though :(
-
NorrinRadd
getmonero.org talks about 3 different types of nodes: 1) localhost only 2) private open (whatever they call it) and 3) public open. as others have already stated, unrestricted rpc isn't for public open. so i'm not talking about a public open node.
-
NorrinRadd
i've also never looked for a ready made conf before but maybe i'm strange on that
-
DanIsnotthemanBr
Seems safe -.-

which mobile monero wallet is recommended? should be open-source and secure. i've heard of cakewallet. is it good? and is there a monero app that gives you a debitcard so you can use your monero to pay $ in stores?
-
nioc
you can buy gift cards with cake, might only be for the US, not sure
-
nioc
it is a widely used wallet
-
nioc
monerujo is another wallet
-
ofrnxmr[m]
Cake and monero.com let you buy gift cards in-app to use in-store and online... (full message at <
