<sneedlewoods_xmr:matrix.org> randomly found these two transactions with strangely high fees for normal size (0.03172 XMR for ~1.5kb)
-
m-relay
<sneedlewoods_xmr:matrix.org> what do you guys think, is that suspicious?
-
m-relay
-
m-relay
-
m-relay
-
m-relay
<rucknium:monero.social> They are about 0.3% of transactions.
-
m-relay
<sneedlewoods_xmr:matrix.org> wow, that sounds like a lot .. good for miners, not so good for the privacy for those using these fees I guess
-
m-relay
<rucknium:monero.social> Yes. I don't know who or what is producing those fees.
-
m-relay
<rucknium:monero.social> Good eye. :)
-
m-relay
<monerobull:matrix.org> bad nodes?
-
m-relay
<monerobull:matrix.org> GUI has been changed to warn about high fees but maybe the bad nodes adjusted and now go slightly below that warning limit?
-
m-relay
<woodser:monero.social> for nodes on monero.fail with https, what credentials are we supposed to use?
-
m-relay
<jokeman203:hackliberty.org> monero doesn't fix anything
-
m-relay
<jokeman203:hackliberty.org> authoritarian, common sense governance does
-
m-relay
<woodser:monero.social> for example,
node.sethforprivacy.com uses https and I can't connect without credentials
-
Inge
nick checks out
-
selsta
woodser: I don't think there should be credentials

<arnuschky:matrix.org> rbrunner7: The person initially creating the wallet has 2 of 3 keys and can rug-pull in theory. If you manage to separate those two keys, nobody can spend funds alone.
-
m-relay
<arnuschky:matrix.org> In operation, all normal tx are signed by the user key and RINO's key (the third key remains ideally air-gapped). All additional policies are implemented on top of that on RINO's side. For example, for a 3 of 5 approval process you need 3 users to approve a transaction before RINO counter-signs it.
-
m-relay
<arnuschky:matrix.org> Lovera: We currently don't support user-created keys atm. We should add that. Alternatively there's the proposal of encrypting the keys with different pgp keys so that the user and backup keys can be separated upon wallet creation.
-
m-relay
<arnuschky:matrix.org> lol I thought I am answering messages a few minutes old, but I just released that they were posted yesterday same time. Element's notifications for sure are slow.
-
m-relay
<rucknium:monero.social> monerobull: `mu_C` for these fees is 38%. That's similar to other fee clusters. `mu_C` is the estimated percentage of rings in these transactions that spent outputs from txs that also paid those particular fees.
-
m-relay
<rucknium:monero.social> So if it is malicious nodes then users are staying connected to the same malicious node for multiple transactions.
-
m-relay
<rucknium:monero.social> Does the GUI/CLI stay connected to the same remote node after the programs restart?
-
m-relay
<monerobull:matrix.org> i dont think so?
-
m-relay
<rucknium:monero.social> ofrnxmr: Do you know? ^
-
m-relay
<rucknium:monero.social> If they switch nodes, then the fee pattern is probably not because of malicious high fee nodes. A user would not likely connect to a malicious node randomly again. I think.
-
m-relay
<sneedlewoods_xmr:matrix.org> afaik for cli you have to give either --daemon-host or --daemon-address else it will try to connect to local node .. but that could be done with a config or launch script, to connect to same remote daemon after restart
-
m-relay
<ofrnxmr:monero.social> I _think_ but am not sure, that simple mode in GUI switches nodes.
-
m-relay
<ofrnxmr:monero.social> cli needs the node to be input manually
-
m-relay
<ofrnxmr:monero.social> I think some of these are from swap sites
-
m-relay
<ofrnxmr:monero.social> I havent kept track, but i have noticed non-standard fees on received xmr from swaps
-
m-relay
<endor00:matrix.org> Last time I ran the Gui (in advanced mode), it stuck to the same remote node (my own) every time, without having to specify it
-
m-relay
<endor00:matrix.org> But it might be configuration-dependant
-
m-relay
<endor00:matrix.org> (Also, it was quite a while ago)

I think this is a Q about simple mode. Jeffro256 took a deep dive on remote nodes in the gui, perhaps can help with Ruckniums question, once a remote node is chosen is it reset after restart? Is the node ever re-selected at random?
-
m-relay
<rucknium:monero.social> By the way, I tested the newest version of the Exodus Mobile wallet and it seems to be producing standard fees now. The Exodus Desktop wallet was fixed a while ago.
-
m-relay
<rucknium:monero.social> I think the Exodus Mobile wallet may have been producing the `98_109_fee_per_byte` fees (about 5% of all Monero transactions).

<rucknium:monero.social> I will have to check the blockchain data after some time has passed and some users have updated.
-
plowsof
👏 thank you!
-
selsta
in simple mode it always selects a random node and it resets on restart
-
selsta
there is a system where nodes failing to respond properly get de-prioritized but that also isn't saved between restart
-
m-relay
<rucknium:monero.social> Thanks, selsta

We had calls for a meeting tomorrow, but as Santerklaus is literally "coming to town" tomorrow afternoon here, i don't know if i can make the usual timeslot 🤔 and not having to think about an uncertain future for a weekend seems like a great idea
-

The future is always uncertain

<jeffro256:monero.social> The bootstrap daemon is picked using a peer scoring system by the local daemon process. So it doesn't *remember* which peers you connected to and doesn't try to reconnect to the same one on purpose, but there's a high chance you can reconnect to the same peer again after restart

<brick:tchncs.de> Pardon my ignorance but can i still receive Monero just fine even whilst my wallet is offline?
-
m-relay
<ack-j:matrix.org> Yes
-
m-relay
<brick:tchncs.de> Cool
-
m-relay
<sweetbearkiller:monero.social> Your XMR is actually on the blockchain and you could still spend it even if you lose your wallet as long as you kept the private key to your fund
-
m-relay
<sweetbearkiller:monero.social> assuming you have it and it4s not stored on third-party server

<sweetbearkiller:monero.social> you could disappear and come back 20y later and if internet is still a thing then your monero too
