seems uncertain if MO is dead

<jordan_sanchez:matrix.org> I agree a lot of good information was on Monero outreach.
-
m-relay
<jordan_sanchez:matrix.org> We need to find a way to recover what we can (ideally the files from the main developer).
-
m-relay
<jordan_sanchez:matrix.org> Also acceptedhere .io was another good resource as well.
-
m-relay
<jordan_sanchez:matrix.org> Should there be a community project to host important community websites?
-
m-relay
<jordan_sanchez:matrix.org> Have a main website as a guide/directory then use subdomains to recreate the (dead) websites?
-
m-relay
<jordan_sanchez:matrix.org> That way if the website from main host ever goes down for whatever reason then at the very least we can a functional archive of the website?
-
m-relay
<jordan_sanchez:matrix.org> (Some projects may go under due to costs, or loss of interest at least this way we can ask the website makers if we can fork their website if they start to lose interest)
-
m-relay
<gfdshygti53:monero.social> Maybe CSS to fund every good Monero ressource sites?
-
m-relay
<gfdshygti53:monero.social> (Like pay for there VPS)
-
m-relay
<gfdshygti53:monero.social> It's probably less expensive than a lot of less usefull CSS out there
-
m-relay
<gfdshygti53:monero.social> Like make a Monero hosting fund and have site manager to send the bills or something
-
m-relay
<k4r4b3y:karapara.net> Is monero outreach offline? If so, wjy did it turn offline?
-
m-relay
<k4r4b3y:karapara.net> Why*
-
m-relay
<jordan_sanchez:matrix.org> It’s been down for a while as far as I can tell.
-
m-relay
<jordan_sanchez:matrix.org> I’m not sure why it’s defunct.
-
m-relay
<jordan_sanchez:matrix.org> Different solutions to the same fundamental issue.
-
m-relay
<jordan_sanchez:matrix.org> However, we all agree that there needs to be a method, or mechanism to ensure critical websites are maintained.
-
m-relay
<jordan_sanchez:matrix.org> The gritty details are to follow, of how we decide critical websites, and who gets to decide that?
-
m-relay
<gfdshygti53:monero.social> He could have anyone proposing sites to support
-
m-relay
<gfdshygti53:monero.social> Then we can vote to choose a priority order for the sites
-
m-relay
<gfdshygti53:monero.social> Then you fund the ones with most priority down to the one with the less
-
m-relay
<jordan_sanchez:matrix.org> I like that approach if we’re going down the funding route.
-
m-relay
<jordan_sanchez:matrix.org> If other people support that route then I am down for that as well.
-
m-relay
<jordan_sanchez:matrix.org> However, I think my original proposal would be more cost-effective in the long run.
-
m-relay
<jordan_sanchez:matrix.org> Perhaps both, help fund sites then if they go down have an archive of them.
-
m-relay
<jordan_sanchez:matrix.org> So people would enter the url of websites they want to have funded, or archived then afterwards people would decide through a voting mechanism of sorts how the general fund should be allocated?
-
m-relay
<rucknium:monero.social> Is there a way to have a dead man's switch for domain control? Some community member owns a domain, but it transfers to Core automatically or something if the alive man doesn't press the button every 6 months?
-
m-relay
<jordan_sanchez:matrix.org> I imagine so but it depends on if the domain is still owned or not.
-
m-relay
<jordan_sanchez:matrix.org> But I’m assuming we’re operating under the guise of a registered domain that the owner preemptively disappeared before the domain renewal date.
-
m-relay
<rucknium:monero.social> I mean, to prevent this situation that has happened half a dozen times already.
-
m-relay
<rucknium:monero.social> Do it now with the relevant domains while we have the men and women alive.
-
m-relay
<jordan_sanchez:matrix.org> Well that’s the intended goal.
-
m-relay
<jordan_sanchez:matrix.org> I think the stages should be.
-
m-relay
<jordan_sanchez:matrix.org> Step 1. Propose a website.
-
m-relay
<jordan_sanchez:matrix.org> Step 2. Contact Website host
-
m-relay
<jordan_sanchez:matrix.org> Step 3. Host Website if host agrees
-
m-relay
<jordan_sanchez:matrix.org> It should be an opt-in method, the website host would still control the website/domain but they would transfer, or share the domain control if they opt-in to the program.
-
m-relay
<jordan_sanchez:matrix.org> There needs to be a fine line of trying to maintain decentralization but the problem with domain control is it that it isn’t exactly a conventional method of keeping it decentralized 😅.
-
m-relay
<jordan_sanchez:matrix.org> So, unfortunately if we’re doing that then it becomes centralized which isn’t necessarily a problem but I think the website file sharing method allows people to own their domains while still maintaining the key information on those websites.
-
m-relay
<jordan_sanchez:matrix.org> And then if the website does go down then we can reclaim the domain, and use the previous files to bring the website back up.
-
m-relay
<jordan_sanchez:matrix.org> If anyone is interested or open to discuss this matter further please let me know via DM so I can make a dedicated group for it.
-
m-relay
<jordan_sanchez:matrix.org> Since I think “spamming” here might be a little annoying to everyone else 😅.

<plowsof:matrix.org> does any wallet have a skip-sync feature yet? (to help people at point of sales not using a light wallet server)
bounties.monero.social/posts/79/0-1…kip-sync-feature-to-a-monero-wallet
-
m-relay
<rbrunner7:monero.social> Don't think so, and if you ask me such a feature is sorely tempting fate. I already imagine the hordes of people who are mistaken about when exactly they receive(d) transactions, don't see the balance they expect after using this feature and then freak out.
-
m-relay
<rbrunner7:monero.social> We already have enough people surfacing on Reddit with freakign out merely because they don't understand they don't see their balance until their wallet is fully synced.
-
ofrnxmr
Plowsof, peopke with pos shoukd have the wallet online 24/7
-
ofrnxmr
Or during business hrs. When opening a franchise in the morning, they turn on the lights, power on the tils, fill the floats
-
ofrnxmr
Pretty sure "open wallet before the store opens" or "leave it open" isnt hard for a merchant
-
ofrnxmr
nerchants should 1. Run nodes 2. Receive tx via their own nodes

Theres a crossroad between [ background sync / skip sync / lws ]
-
ofrnxmr
... my last msg disappeared (explaining cons of each)

Ez just make them check a box "I deny all my rights and privileges" before proceeding
-

BG sync.. with the right parameters it should keep you within range of a fast sync (wifi, charging, or sync for 5 mins per hr over mobile network etc). But data and battery usage + having a constant live internet connection (pocket warmer) isnt ideal. So done right, its an improvement
-
ofrnxmr
Skip sync.. is like entering the wrong/late restore date. "wheres my money", or someone send you money in the 2 days you havent used your wallet and you skip it, only to be asked weeks later "you didnt get the money i sent?" And have to resync
-
ofrnxmr
Or just to skip sync all willy nilly and end up with broken wallets (what happens if i have 1xmr in wallet 1, spend it from wallet2, then skip sync in wallet 2. I end up with unspendable coins, no?)
-
ofrnxmr
Then skip sync in wallet 1*
-
ofrnxmr
And lws requires a central entity unless you run it yourself. not many normies are going to run servers of any kind
-
endogenic
fwiw... and i wish i hadnt faced recent roadblocks but.... i have a version of wallet2 which supports all of the above afaict
