Zyansheep[m]
hello, is anyone here interested in privacy-preserving peer-to-peer routing? (i.e. TOR but faster)
-
Elijah[m]
Zyansheep[m]: Are you talking about Lokinet?
-
Zyansheep[m]
huh, i've heard of lokinet, but i'm not sure how it works. is it any different to tor or i2p in terms of efficiency?
-
Elijah[m]
It's faster but it works similar to how a VPN works. Meaning that your ip gets linked with anything you have running, not just the browser you decide to use. It also has subpar UX and if you are a complete noob, you won't have any privacy
-
Elijah[m]
Because you won't know to put exit.loki ad the exit node
-
Zyansheep[m]
on their faq I found they use something called llarp for the onion routing?
-
ZombieMaster[m]1
also it is closed source
-
ZombieMaster[m]1
I think
-
Zyansheep[m]
yeah, lokinet has like zero links on their website
-
ZombieMaster[m]1
together with a "staking" process for node operators
-
Palladionhehim[m
<Zyansheep[m]> "hello, is anyone here interested..." <- Zeronet?
-
ZombieMaster[m]1
Palladionhehim[m: zeronet is over Tor
-
Palladionhehim[m
ZombieMaster[m]1: It's closed?
-
ZombieMaster[m]1
Palladionhehim[m: think so
-
Palladionhehim[m
ZombieMaster[m]1: Your network is so secure when you need to pay to be a router /s
-
Palladionhehim[m
Lokinet def isn't the best, and they can even control your site if you are on testnet
-
Palladionhehim[m
That's from the devs themselves
-
Palladionhehim[m
I get it's testnet but still
-
Elijah[m]
I mean you could just run your own test net, it is for testing anyways 😂
-
Palladionhehim[m
Fair, it's just weird they took down stuff they didn't like
-
Zyansheep[m]
lokinet seems to be taking the "just make it a cryptocurrency" approach to funding...
-
Palladionhehim[m
Zyansheep[m]: Not everything needs to be a blockchain
-
Elijah[m]
Palladionhehim[m: Example? I'm curious what they took down.
-
Palladionhehim[m
I hate the ideology of it
-
ZombieMaster[m]1
"secure your traffic with gov overlords"
-
Palladionhehim[m
Elijah[m]: 8chan, I don't like the site at all but yeah
-
Elijah[m]
Palladionhehim[m: From the test net or mainnet?
-
Palladionhehim[m
Elijah[m]: Testnet as they were trying to get it running
-
Elijah[m]
Why would 8chan be run on a test net?
-
Palladionhehim[m
I got 0 clue
-
Elijah[m]
Palladionhehim[m: Ohhh
-
Palladionhehim[m
I just asked about it, probably testing
-
Palladionhehim[m
But they left lokinet soon after
-
Palladionhehim[m
And the devs are super pissy about it when I asked them about what happened
-
Palladionhehim[m
s/are/were/
-
Elijah[m]
Well I do think they did the anonymous messenger Session right.
-
Palladionhehim[m
Yes
-
Palladionhehim[m
It runs over lokinet
-
Palladionhehim[m
Acting as their router for messages
-
Palladionhehim[m
Using swarm
-
Zyansheep[m]
anyway, I have an idea for an improved routing protocol to replace TOR
-
Zyansheep[m]
and it goes like this:
-
Palladionhehim[m
Same here,
-
Palladionhehim[m
Basically we take plastic cups and string
-
Zyansheep[m]
instead of having a list of routers that users pick and choose from to route their packets through onion routing
-
Zyansheep[m]
the network sets itself up in a distributed fashion, so that existing nodes are connected to around ~300 of their nearest (latency-wise) nodes
-
Zyansheep[m]
using a protocol to continually querying and pining existing nodes to find closer and closer nodes
-
Zyansheep[m]
and once you have this network of nodes connected to close other nodes
-
ZombieMaster[m]1
Zyansheep[m]: isnt that why i2p is doing?
-
Palladionhehim[m
I would imagine that would be rough on the network to query so many people
-
Zyansheep[m]
each node can calculate a coordinate representing its place spacially in the network
-
ZombieMaster[m]1
of freenet? don't remember
-
Palladionhehim[m
ZombieMaster[m]1: No, you select nodes to make a tunnel
-
Palladionhehim[m
Freenet is doing it
-
ZombieMaster[m]1
s/of/or/
-
Zyansheep[m]
and then using these spacial coordinates, instead of choosing nodes randomly around the world, you can choose intermediate nodes to be on the way to your destination
