is there a dev forum (vbulletin style)?
-
hhanh00[m]
found this:
forum.getmonero.org but it looks broken
-
moneromooo
It's discontinued. The above should be read only.
-
hhanh00[m]
any replacement?
-
moneromooo
Here.
-
moneromooo
Well, not a replacement.
-
moneromooo
Oh, github I guess.
-
hhanh00[m]
but this is a chat ... it's not threaded by discussion
-
hhanh00[m]
moneromooo: ok

in zcash, they have a "lightclient" protocol where nodes serve trimmed blocks to clients. The clients perform trial decryption and build their transaction locally. It has the advantage of not sending the view key out. Does Monero have a similar system?
-
moneromooo
Maybe. Can you rephrase ? It's not clear what it does from that description.
-
moneromooo
I'd understand if it weren't for "build their transaction locally".
-
UkoeHB
hhanh00[m]: that would be remote nodes
-
hhanh00[m]
<moneromooo> "I'd understand if it weren't for..." <- maybe something specific for zcash but besides the signature, the transaction contains a zk-proof which requires keeping & updating a bunch of merkle tree witnesses
-
hhanh00[m]
of course, the full node does that but it's not trivial for light clients
-
hhanh00[m]
the trimmed blocks have to contain that data too
-
hhanh00[m]
<UkoeHB> "hhanh00: that would be remote..." <- don't they receive my view key when i ask for a wallet scan?
-
xxfedexx[m]
hhanh00[m]: No they don't
-
xxfedexx[m]
There are three tipes of wallets:
-
xxfedexx[m]
- Light wallets
-
xxfedexx[m]
- Wallets without node
-
xxfedexx[m]
- Full wallets
-
xxfedexx[m]
Light wallets send your view key to remote server, so you do not need to download any part of blockchain
-
xxfedexx[m]
Wallets without node download part of the blockchain
-
xxfedexx[m]
Full wallets run a full node and download all the blockchain
-
hhanh00[m]
xxfedexx[m]: what part of the blockchain do they download?
-
xxfedexx[m]
hhanh00[m]: The blocks newer than your wallet restore height
-
hhanh00[m]
they need the birth height of the wallet, right?
-
hhanh00[m]
and if the wallet is old, that means downloading lots of blocks
-
UkoeHB
iirc when using a remote node it just sends all the txos to your wallet, which you scan locally
-
hhanh00[m]
it would need to know your view key to do the trial decryption
-
hhanh00[m]
right?
-
UkoeHB
the remote node sends ALL the txos to your wallet
-
UkoeHB
no trial decryption
-
hhanh00[m]
well - that's nearly all the blockchain data
-
UkoeHB
not even close, proofs are way bigger
-
hhanh00[m]
you can decrypt your txo without the proof?
-
UkoeHB
yes, it's just a DH exchange with a key attached to the txo
-
hhanh00[m]
ok - i think this is what i am after
-
hhanh00[m]
thanks
-
moneromooo
"Wallet without node" and "full wallet" are kinda right if you squint hard, but they're really the same thing, they use a node which could be local or remote (and usually run by an adversary).
-
moneromooo
The wallet will download only pruned txes from the node. It's something like a third or a quarter the size, so still significant.
