Hello, is anyone by chance online that can help me out with some issues I'm having?
-
moneromooo
Maybe, if you tell us what the issue is. If it's not to do with monero though, go elsewhere. If it's about monero but not monero development, go to #monero.

Well, I guess technically it is just using the Cryptonote protocol. I am a complete beginner, and am looking for a good place to begin. I am having issues getting the github fork compiled
-
moneromooo
Make sure you're using github.com/monero-project/monero, make sure you have the deps installed (see README.md), run "make".
-
moneromooo
(might need to use gmake on *BSD)
-
moneromooo
You can also paste the errors with context to paste.debian.net.
-
Guest77
Thank you very much! I think I am missing some dependencies, and I was previously using the wrong github as well. I'm guessing that this github is the reason that I'm messing up?
github.com/cryptonotefoundation/cryptonote
-
Guest77
Sorry If i'm not allowed to link that by the way I wasnt sure
-
moneromooo
You're allowed to, but I doubt anyone here really knows about that repo.
-
moneromooo
And if they do, I bet they'll keep schtum anyway :)
-
Guest77
Understandable, what are the main differences between developing a cryptocurrency project using that repo versus monero's?
-
moneromooo
I assume cryptonotefoundation/cryptonote is the original system. Monero has improved in a number of ways upon it.
-
moneromooo
Practically though, no idea.
-
moneromooo
Monero is a maintained working chain. The one you linked might be a demo/PoC (I did not check).
-
moneromooo
I know they had a "template" thing for making new coins, at least. Check if it's that.
-
moneromooo
If so, it was said to be easy to use. But it won't have monero's privacy.
-
moneromooo
Just so you know, if you fork it or monero, questions about your own fork won't be on topic here. In general, questoins like "it doesn't work" which can be answered with "it would if you undid your changes" are unlikely to be welcome here.
-
moneromooo
Though questions about it which are more... research-y and extend-y may be welcome. Depends on the particulars.
-
moneromooo
Basically, we're not a helpdesk for forks.
-
moneromooo
So a bit of help is fine, but don't push. Common sense really. Hope you have it :)
-
moneromooo
Also, about differences, I think they rewrote their code completely years ago, so any patches will be unportable between both, even if made in code that barely changed in monero.
-
Guest77
Yea I'm pretty sure it's pretty much a template for making new coins, sorry if this sounds stupid but I guess that's kind of my question with the monero development github repo, is it similar in that regard? And I totally understand please let me know if i cross any boundaries, I will admit I am fairly new.
-
moneromooo
Monero is not a template. If you want to make a coin because you're curious, the CN template may be a better choice.
-
moneromooo
Monero is totally usable as a code base for a fork, it's just not as easy.
-
moneromooo
The CN template will not have nice stuff like subaddresses, hidden amounts, etc. It'll be a lot simpler. So easier to learn the basics if that's your goal.
-
Guest77
That's exactly what I'm looking to do, thank you very much. Just out of curiosity, what would be an example case of something someone from here would use Monero for?
-
Guest77
The repo for
-
moneromooo
Well, buying stuff and gambling.
-
moneromooo
Even if a merchant you buy from knows your address to ship your stuff, it cuts your bank, credit card issuer, and possibly others from the data. Better privacy right there.
-
Guest77
I understand that for sure, I'm a huge fan of the privacy coins, I more so mean what would someone use that github repo dedicated for monero for development wise?
-
moneromooo
Well, I did fork it myself actually. I made a game (
townforge.net).
-
moneromooo
Many others forked it to make a me-too coin.
-
Guest77
That is very very cool, so you can create your own cryptocurrency using this fork? I notice that it says "townforge currency" on your website. So you used that monero repo to create your own cryptocurrency?
-
moneromooo
Yes, it's a monero fork, so it has its own "money" like any other fork.
-
moneromooo
The game is on top, but down below it's a monero style cryptocurrency/chain.
-
moneromooo
So like Litecoin is forked from Bitcoin and its a separate currency, TF gold is separate from monero.
-
moneromooo
If you were to fork the CN template to make your coin, you'd be making another separate currency too.
-
Guest77
I see what you're saying, I really appreciate your help and sorry for being so ignorant coming in here, it's so hard to find concise information online about this stuff.
-
Guest77
I think I'm going to take a look at the Monero fork and see what it has to offer, I like the idea of being on a secure chain
-
moneromooo
By "secure" here, do you mean "battle tested" or "with high hash rate" ?
-
moneromooo
If you mean the latter, forking monero will not give you the same hash rate (unless you merge mine (which TF does)).
-
Guest77
What is TF? And I mean battle-tested haha, I haven't really looked too much into the hash rates, or any of the intricate technical, I'm just now starting my journey of creating my own project. I'm looking for a solid concise tutorial, or source of information but I am lacking to find it. The Github ReadMe is helping a good amount, but I ran into
-
Guest77
some major issues with compiling on the CN template
-
moneromooo
I mean Townforge (monero fork above).
-
Guest77
Ohhh my apologizes, that makes sense now!!
-
moneromooo
You're welcome to pop in in #townforge if you wanna try it btw :D
-
Guest77
I would love too:) Thank you
-
Guest77
Do you by chance have any good intricate guide or series that I could watch for development? Anything from a book, to a video series/audio series would work for me
-
moneromooo
Not really any tutorial. There are two books that may be helpful though: Mastering monero and Zero to monero (the latter being about the tech/math/crypto).
-
moneromooo
PDF books, not dead tree books.
-
moneromooo
There are some less technical papers on lab.getmonero.org IIRC.
-
moneromooo
monero.stackexchange is also useful if you know what you're looking for.
-
moneromooo
monero.stackexchange.com
-
moneromooo
Oh! Breaking monero, a video series from sarang IIRC.
-
moneromooo
This is more about the tech though.
