alright
-
moneroextremist[
i have 2 last questions for you. It turns out verifying the hashes using the terminal is a lot more easier than I initially thought.
-
moneroextremist[
selsta: First question. Do I save the binaryfate.asc file as a .txt file ?
-
moneroextremist[
Second question : Is it really necessary to download the binaryfate.asc file ? what does this file do exactly ?
-
selsta
verifying the hashes is easy, verifying the signature is more complicated
-
moneroextremist[
selsta: do you need to verify the signature too?
-
moneroextremist[
it doesnt say anything about verifying the signature on getmonero.org....
-
moneroextremist[
either way, please answer the last 2 questions i asked
-
moneroextremist[
by signature, do you mean "Verify Signing Key"
-
moneroextremist[
i see a section abotu verifying the signing key is that what you're talking about selsta
-
selsta
yes
-
selsta
and "Download and Verify Hash File"
-
moneroextremist[
binaryfate.asc is what verifies the signature correct ? selsta
-
moneroextremist[
-
moneroextremist[
is that all u have to do to verify the signature
-
moneroextremist[
s/gpg_keys/gpg\_keys/, s/fingerprin/fingerprint binaryfate.asc/
-
selsta
you have to import binaryFate.asc into GPG
-
selsta
and then use GPG to verify the signature of hashes.txt
-
moneroextremist[
yes
-
moneroextremist[
but when i save binaryfate.asc, it only saves as binaryfate.asc.txt
-
moneroextremist[
is this a problem ?
-
moneroextremist[
selsta:
-
selsta
do you have GPG installed?
-
moneroextremist[
<selsta> "do you have GPG installed?" <- i havent installed it yet im planning to do it on the hard fork day but im just getting myself ready in advance so i dont stress too much when it happens
-
moneroextremist[
but is it normal that binaryfate.asc.txt only saves as a .txt file
-
selsta
ok, but like I said, all these steps are already done automatically inside the GUI
-
selsta
that's the whole point of the updater so that it's more user friendly
-
moneroextremist[
selsta: can i do it anyway if im extremely paranoid
-
moneroextremist[
is there any risk to downloading the gpg suite
-
selsta
no but I can't help you because I never downloaded it myself
-
moneroextremist[
selsta: wdym no
-
moneroextremist[
selsta: you never verified your hashes ?
-
moneroextremist[
or signature
-
selsta
i did but I did it from the terminal
-
moneroextremist[
how can i do it from the terminal?
-
moneroextremist[
is it possible on macos
-
moneroextremist[
id rather do it from the terminal than download gpg
-
selsta
yes but that requires you to install a package manager first
-
selsta
and maybe xcode
-
selsta
so that's even more complicated
-
moneroextremist[
selsta: are u sure theres no risk in downloading the gpg thing
-
moneroextremist[
my paranoia is reaching all time highs when it comes to stuff like this
-
moneroextremist[
btw u still didnt answer my question about binaryfateasc saving as a txt file
-
moneroextremist[
is it normal that it saves as a txt file
-
selsta
it's not normal
-
selsta
i don't know how you saved it
-
selsta
i don't know if there is a risk with downloading gpg suite
-
moneroextremist[
i saved it by right clicking on the page and saving it on my desktop
-
moneroextremist[
it shows as a plain text file on my mac
-
moneroextremist[
-
selsta
ok, rename it to binaryfate.asc
-
moneroextremist[
i just did, but my mac is still showing it as a 'plaintext' file
-
moneroextremist[
is it okay?
-
-
moneroextremist[
check the screenshot selsta
-
selsta
yes should be ok
-
selsta
open Terminal, then enter
-
selsta
-
selsta
then enter
-
selsta
open .
-
selsta
then you have it downloaded correctly
-
moneroextremist[
zsh: command not found: wget
-
moneroextremist[
thats what the terminal just said
-
selsta
-
selsta
try this
-
moneroextremist[
i just did it
-
moneroextremist[
where did it save
-
selsta
open .
-
selsta
opens finder and there should be binaryfate.asc
-
moneroextremist[
there. just found it
-
moneroextremist[
the binaryfate i just downloaded isnt a plain text file, its a document !
-
moneroextremist[
so it turns out that there is a difference !
-
selsta
ok, that's correct then
-
selsta
document is correct
-
-
moneroextremist[
look screenshot
-
moneroextremist[
yeah
-
moneroextremist[
so if i had used the plaintext file, the process would've failed?
-
selsta
don't know, maybe, maybe not
-
moneroextremist[
<selsta> "don't know, maybe, maybe not" <- any update on seraphis?
-
selsta
ukoe works on a proof of concept implementation
-
selsta
no release date
-
moneroextremist[
selsta: if u were to guess a release date, would u say before end of year?
-
selsta
no
-
selsta
later
