gui related, i swear

-
monerobull[m]
looks like guy paid on v17, transaction showed failed and displayed balance as refunded but was actually sent and subsequent attempts to retry failed because balance was actually too low (but displayed balance still the same)
-
monerobull[m]
guy doesnt have the v17 transaction logs anymore
-
metawill[m]
I have installed the latest verion of the GUI, ans since then, though I haven't changed any setting, the application cannot synch to a daemon
-
metawill[m]
So I cannot send XMR
-
metawill[m]
I was on a remote mode, so I move to a local mode, but still nothing
-
metawill[m]
My balance is displayed though
-
moneromooo
What height is your daemon on ?
-
metawill[m]
2660080
-
moneromooo
Restart it with --log-level 1, see what error(s) it prints.
-
metawill[m]
ok, hold on
-
metawill[m]
I have restarted, so the?
-
metawill[m]
It's still the same

[15/08/2022 17:12] 2022-08-15 15:12:52.223 I Monero 'Fluorine Fermi' (v0.18.1.0-release)... (full message at

-
moneromooo
That is most definitely not log level 1.
-
-
metawill[m]
See the screencapture
-
moneromooo
I do not. You might be using some matrix specific thing which doesn't show up on IRC.
-
metawill[m]
Last time I went there for support, the screen capture sent were seen
-
metawill[m]
So, I'm blocked, can you help though?
-
moneromooo
If you see an error in the verify category after restarting with log level 1, paste it here.

metawill[m]: it seems you are synchronizing, what is the exact issue?
-
metawill[m]
It never synchronizes succefully, so I cannot use my wallet
-
metawill[m]
A warning keeps stating " "Waiting on daemon synchronization to finish
-
selsta
because synchronizing a local node will take a while
-
selsta
do you want to sync a local node or do you just want to send a transaction?
-
metawill[m]
After a previoous issue (height number) I passed on distant node, and it worked
-
metawill[m]
I want to send a transaction
-
metawill[m]
Can I go back to distant node?
-
metawill[m]
Your collegue gave me instructions for that though, I don't know how to do this now
-
selsta
Go to Settings -> Node, select remote node
-
selsta
-
metawill[m]
Ok, so a message asks if I want to force stop of keep the local node running
-
metawill[m]
What do I do?
-
selsta
click ok
-
selsta
or yes
-
metawill[m]
I keep it running? or Force stop?
-
selsta
force stop it, it does not matter
-
metawill[m]
Ok I just did that
-
-
metawill[m]
Can you see the screen capture?
-
metawill[m]
a remote mode info is asked
-
selsta
address: selsta2.featherwallet.net
-
selsta
port: 18081
-
selsta
login and password empty
-
selsta
then click add
-
metawill[m]
why selsta as your name?
-
selsta
because I run it, I linked you a comment with different nodes
-
metawill[m]
what selsta is?
-
monerobull[m]
Use a node like xmr-node.cakewallet.com:18081
-
metawill[m]
I'm in Advanced mode (Remote node)
-
selsta
yes
-
metawill[m]
So, if I stay on local node, how long should it take to synchronize?
-
selsta
it depends on your operating system and hardware
-
selsta
can take between 12h and multiple days
-
metawill[m]
but in any case, it should do, or are the some settings to adjust?
-
metawill[m]
Do you mean I have to let myu computer opened for that amout of time?
-
metawill[m]
How come, as it is local?
-
selsta
it only synchronized when your computer is open, yes
-
metawill[m]
Do I have to stay in advande mode (Local node)?
-
selsta
Do you want to sync your local node or do you want to connect to a remote node?
-
metawill[m]
I want to be able to send XMR
-
ofrnxmr[m]
You can send xmr using a remote node
-
metawill[m]
yes, but I need a secured address and port
-
ofrnxmr[m]
The address and port that selsta gave you are to a remote node that is run by them. Selsta is a trusted member of the community
-
metawill[m]
ok
-
ofrnxmr[m]
You can trust selsta2.featherwallet.net port 18081
-
metawill[m]
Ok, thank you very much. What about this page? Is that safe?
-
metawill[m]
-
selsta
everyone can add their node on this page
-
ofrnxmr[m]
No
-
ofrnxmr[m]
There are trusted nodes on there,
-
ofrnxmr[m]
Sethforprivacy, cake wallets, selsta2, but also a lot of random and even malicious nodes
-
metawill[m]
I see, so on what web page can I eventually find a certified secured distante node?
-
selsta
ideally you would run your own node, but that will take a while until synced
-
selsta
if you can't do that you should connect to a node from someone you "trust"
-
ofrnxmr[m]
-
metawill[m]
Ok, but with all due respect, meaning no offense, how do I know I be sure I can trust you?
-
ofrnxmr[m]
This list is pretty good
-
ofrnxmr[m]
You cant trust me.
-
selsta
you can't know
-
ofrnxmr[m]
Which is why its always best to run your own node
-
metawill[m]
Ok! So, if I send money from a malicious distant mode, the money can be stolen, correct?
-
metawill[m]
Even if the address is specific to a destination?
-
ofrnxmr[m]
Nope.
-
moneromooo
You cannot send money from a node. The node does not have the money.
-
moneromooo
A malicious node you send through can prevent you from sending, but not steal your monero.
-
metawill[m]
So, what happens if I send money from a malicious distant node?
-
metawill[m]
Ok, thank you!
-
ofrnxmr[m]
They can choose to not relay the tx, can raise your suggested fees, or slightly alter your decoy selection
-
moneromooo
There is ONE possible way they can "steal", but tha'ts social engineering really:
-
moneromooo
They can make it look like you got monero when you didn't, and somehow get you to send it back (using real funds this time).
-
metawill[m]
what is the benefit of such a malicious guy then? Do they get the difference of the raised fee?
-
moneromooo
Good point about the fee... I was wrong, they can steal :D Though it means you have to confirm wihtout looking at the fee I guess.
-
moneromooo
If they're also a large miner.
-
moneromooo
They do not have to send the tx to other nodes. They keep it, and mine.
-
moneromooo
Might take a while, but even if they have only 1% of the network, they'll mione a blck a day at least.
-
selsta
the GUI warns about large fees now
-
metawill[m]
selsta: ok!
-
metawill[m]
Thank you very much, everything worked fine!
-
selsta
you can still sync your own node if you want and switch between local and remote node
