but we still use Qt5 for backwards compatibility

something last. The code looks clean but the cmake system horribly complicated. What would be a great record of how this thing evolved organically?

if you are familiar with CMake, simplifications welcome. some of the reasons why it's more complicated is due to Qt bugs that we had to workaround
