<rucknium> I'm having a strange DNS problem with moneronet.info . When I use dig I don't see the DNS records that I specified through my domain registrar. I see info in the AUTHORITY section that I don't recognize. I have paid for registration of this domain until July 2026. Any ideas what could cause this and possible solutions?

<rucknium> Njalla

br-m
<intr:unredacted.org> you'll likely need to make a support ticket with them, and then pray they give a shit

<plowsof:matrix.org> @rucknium:monero.social i seen this thread the other day

<plowsof:matrix.org> some accusation of domain theft too, not sure about that tbh
-
br-m
<intr:unredacted.org> @plowsof:matrix.org: it's not theft because they own all the domains
-
br-m
<intr:unredacted.org> they don't owe you shit
-
br-m
<intr:unredacted.org> that's the massive downside to their scheme
-
br-m
<intr:unredacted.org> thanks for the reminder, as I need to move my domains elsewhere
-
br-m
<rbrunner7> Well, you paid for a service, even if it's only "lending this domain for use for a year" ...
-
br-m
<rbrunner7> Maybe the error is that normal rules for domain registrations apply. They don't. You don't have some related rights either. You just rent ... well ... something :)
-
br-m
<rbrunner7> Er, the error is that you think that ...
-
br-m
<intr:unredacted.org> I don't believe it's even truly lending, they just let you manage the DNS records, but they own the domain at the end of the day. And there have been quite a few cases of them banning you and refusing to let you switch registrars
-
br-m
<intr:unredacted.org> @rbrunner7: yep
-
br-m
<kiersten5821:matrix.org> njalla is well known to steal domains this is reported on every single platform
-
br-m
<rbrunner7> Maybe a dumb question, but what do they get out of that? You pay for a year, after half a year they "steal" your domain, and then what? Rent it out immediately to somebody else?
-
br-m
<rbrunner7> Or see the domain on the open market, if it's a "nice" name?
-
br-m
<rbrunner7> *Or sell
-
br-m
<ofrnxmr> @rbrunner7: my guess is that they can raise the price exponentially
-
br-m
<intr:unredacted.org> @rbrunner7: primarily it's a politics thing
-
br-m
<321bob321> @rucknium: Have you looked at desec
-

-
br-m
<hbs:matrix.org> @kiersten5821:matrix.org: technically njalla has always been the sole owner of the domains registered via its services, this is how their customers can remain anonymous
-
br-m
<321bob321> All are like that

br-m
<321bob321> They are the mitm
-
br-m
<321bob321> You just have to find a realiable one
-
br-m
<rucknium> > A status of "ServerHold" means the registry has suspended the domain. A status of ClientHold means the registrar has suspended the domain. Njalla has no influence on the registries and registrars, so if your domain is suspended, you should reach out to them.

<rucknium> ICANN lookup says moneronet.info has the clientHold status. That sounds bad.

<321bob321> Someone complained
-
br-m
<rucknium> Registrar is TUCOWS. Maybe I can ask them to restore the domain.
-
br-m
<321bob321> Ask why
-
br-m
<321bob321> You would have to prove ownership tho
-
br-m
<rucknium> moneroconsensus.info has clientHold too.
-
br-m
<321bob321> Sounds targeted

br-m
<321bob321> All domains on the same provider ?
-
br-m
<rucknium> Those two are on the same provider. I have other domains with that provider that are unaffected.
-
br-m
<kiersten5821:matrix.org> @hbs:matrix.org: yes, however there are many other providers who do the same thing, but are not frequently reported to steal the domains
-
br-m
<kiersten5821:matrix.org> you could say that's because a lot of people use them but i think their complaint rate is way way higher even when measured as per user
-
br-m
<intr:unredacted.org> @kiersten5821:matrix.org can you name a few?

<aillia:matrix.org> I was looking for an anonymous VPS + domain provider for my side projects, I came across this nice comparison (reason why I decided not to use Njalla as I had originally planned):
