im almost done syncing monero blockchain on my daemon right now and im about 3.1 hours behind and just got hit with a huge wall of host blocks

is there something going on with the network right now?

You will see stuff happen as blocks with those events are added.

It costs a little. Not enough probably. By default moneor-wallet-cli will tell you the fee before asking yes/no.

It won't be particularly fast though. And the more use monero sees, the slower it'll be.

I suppose that's one reason to continue doing more frequent releases, keep updating the checkpoint hashes

then new users will mostly be network bound until they get past the compiled-in hashes

The coins are "stored" on the chain. Your private keys (derived from the seed) allow you to sign transactions and use those coins. Whoever owns the seed, effectively owns the coins

In the case of Coinbase, if you leave your coins on the exchange, they are effectively in their wallet, which means they're the owners

And all you have is an IOU in which they pinky promise that they'll let you use them whenever you want

It's not even about the system - simply put, by using their service you are implicitly required to trust that they won't screw you over or mess things up. The whole point of crypto is to remove trust and middlemen
