Were Range Proofs a part of the initial CryptoNote spec and implemented in ByteCoin when Monero forked it? And are Range Proofs no longer used in Monero now that Bulletproofs have been implemented?
-
alMalsamo
Also I read on some website that Monero was considering implementing zk-STARKs, would this replace RingCT or be used alongside it?
-
nioc
Range proofs were not originally used because amounts were not hidden, they used another method to obfuscate amounts
-
nioc
bulletproof are a type of rangeproof
-
nioc
They are an upgrade from the original type used in that they are much smaller
-
nioc
I don't know of any work being done on zk-starks for monero
-
nioc
Rangeproofs were introduced with ringCT
-
alMalsamo
Hmm do you know what method to obfuscate amounts were used before Range Proofs? And when you say "obfuscate amounts" do you mean amounts of transcations or seeing amounts of coin contained by a given address when analyzing the blockchain?
-
alMalsamo
So RingCT and Range Proofs go hand-in-hand when implemented?
-
nioc
Amounts were broken down into units, so 456.78 sent included 400+50+6+.7+.08 along with amounts left over as change which were also broken down into units
-
nioc
Yes to your second question
-
nioc
The units used needed to exist as outputs and some obviously were quite rare
-
nioc
*chosen from previous outputs that were used

Hello.
-
alMalsamo
It looks like WOWnero got rid of pool mining:
git.wownero.com/wownero/meta/issues/28
-
alMalsamo
Why doesn't Monero do this as well?
-
moneromooo
It'd probably make it easier to attack by a third party, which is worse than easier to attack by a handful of fixed parties.
-
moneromooo
The degrees depend on pool miners' behaviour if they can't pool mine anymore.
-
moneromooo
If they switch to solo mining, it'd be great. If they stop mining, it's not.
-
moneromooo
The amount of lost hash rate will be somewhere in the middle, but probably closer to losing most.
-
moneromooo
Now, though, since we have p2pool, it might be a more... winsome change, since p2pool gives low hash rate miners another possibility...
-
moneromooo
Which, if easy enough to switch to, might mean not so much hash rate gets shed.
-
moneromooo
It'd require p2pool to be as easy to run as a typical pool miner though.
-
alMalsamo
Why do you think people would stop mining if pools were prohibited?
-
alMalsamo
And how does pure-solo mining make it easier to attack by a third party?
-
moneromooo
Because, modulo p2pool, variance would shoot through the roof, and see my third line, resp.
-
alMalsamo
moneromooo: Sorry I asked 2 questions, which were you replying to? What does "modulo" refer to? And your third line seems to be: "If they switch to solo mining, it'd be great. If they stop mining, it's not." which doesn't answer either of my 2 questions.
-
moneromooo
I replied to both. resp means respectively. modulo means "disregarding". That third line answers "And how does pure-solo mining make it easier to attack by a third party?".
-
moneromooo
So, "Why do you think people would stop mining if pools were prohibited?" -> because variance
-
moneromooo
And: "And how does pure-solo mining make it easier to attack by a third party?" -> because most pool miners would just stop mining instead of solo mining
-
alMalsamo
moneromooo: Sorry I do not know what "variance" means in terms of PoW mining
-
moneromooo
A measure of the typical deviation of a statistical distribution (here, timing of finding some monero).
-
moneromooo
deviation from its mean.
-
moneromooo
Basically, the more irregular the incoming monero (so, the higher the variance), the more miners tend to not like it.
-
moneromooo
And, with the law of small numbers, you get increased variance as your hash rate is small compared to the network hash rate.
-
alMalsamo
Hmm is this because it is rare to solve a block when there are many small solo miners?>
-
moneromooo
It is hard to solve a block when your hash rate is small compared to the network hash rate.
-
sech1
alMalsamo Wownero disabled pool mining, but their solution also makes p2pool impossible
-
alMalsamo
sech1: So it is possible to disable pool mining but still somehow allow p2pool?
-
Lib
how do I see exact amount sent to a subaddress?
-
moneromooo
Did you try: help balance ?
-
Lib
yes
-
Lib
it show balance of currently selected account
-
Lib
it does not give me an option to put the subaddress balance
-
Lib
well balance detail
-
Lib
solved the problem
-
blizzow
Anyone here using the monerod.org pool? What are folks sentiment about using that pool?
-
nioc
AIUI they charge zero fees by claiming the fee that would go to the xmrig devs for themselves
-
merope
That whole website/platform looks sketchy af to me
-
merope
I'd stay the hell away from it
-
nioc
ofc they don't mention that themselves
-
blizzow
Any recommended pools?
-
apotheon
P2Pool
-
apotheon
maybe XMRFast if you don't want P2Pool
-
moneromooo
Any that's not one of the two or three larger ones, and which is not minergate or dwarfpool, and where you aren't the only one (unless you don't mind variance).
-
hyc
I can't see a good reason to recommend anything besides p2pool. 0% pool fees, how can you beat that?
-
tidux
moneroocean is still a good option if you're using GPUs
-
tidux
although that's not -really- mining Monero
-
Mochi101
++ hyc
-
Mochi101
hyc, in #pools we are recomending p2pool
-
Mochi101
recommending too
-
Bill48105
like a sore peter, can't beat it
