Yes, localmonero.co is a popular platform
-
Mochi101
DrNick2, Localmonero is good. Make sure you use a reputable seller.

DrNick2
Sweet!

Woo! I got a tiny amount of XMR from the Faucet. Alas it looks like the daemon is down and it can't send any XMR.
-
DrNick2
Also the amount is way less than the min amount it will send. I guess that's not a huge suprise. :-D
-
apotheon
DrNick2: What faucet do you mean?
-
DrNick2
The one in #tippero
-
DrNick2
(Wallet)
-
apotheon
ah
-
apotheon
I see that now.
-
DrNick2
I'm trying to trade with someone listed as "Seen just now" 2 hours ago and they've not responded. Hope that's not a red flag. :-)
-
DrNick2
-
nioc
DrNick2: just seen now means that they are logged on not necessarily that they are actively monitoring
-
DrNick2
nioc: Ahhh, cool. Sounds like I just need to be more patient.
-
louipc
DrNick2: its some bug with the API supposedly. you should be able to withdraw once you collected enough
-
littlebo1eep
Anyone here use Kovri?
-
littlebo1eep
Ahhhh is the website down or what
getkovri.org/index.html
-
littlebo1eep
Does not seem updated in a while:
gitlab.com/kovri-project/kovri
-
littlebo1eep
kovri.io redirects to some GoDaddy bullshit
-
littlebo1eep
/r/kovri also seems dead
-
littlebo1eep
no one in #kovri or #kovri-dev
-
nioc
kovri development stopped years ago
-
nioc
nothing was ever released
-
apotheon
Yeah, it's a pretty dead project.

09:27 moneromooo: The better stopgap is what it always has been. Don't insert your wallet into some random unknown's open port.
-
lousiF
09:28 moneromooo: It's a stopgap, a solution, and the right way to do things.
-
lousiF
09:29 moneromooo: Start equating this with safe sex and people will start getting the idea.
-
lousiF
09:29 moneromooo: (maybe)
-
lousiF
just saw that lol

1-65535 are technically 'orifices'..
-
emagex
I'm making this meme and need to choose three adjectives that describes monero, which one? suggestions: private, fungible, decentralised, fair, secure, scarce, open source, untraceable, sound money.
-
emagex
-
klaxa
this isn't a meme, this is begging :^)
-
emagex
a begging meme :)
-
louipc
not a meme
-
louipc
nice gfx tho
-
lousiF
-
emagex
ok, let me rephrase, I'm utilizing a meme for the qr code, anyway, what I'm stuck on is what adjectives to use!
-
emagex
can't use them all 😅
-
louipc
just nestle that in a comfy bed of adjectives
-
klaxa
also, nobody tell him that technically because of tail emission monero also has infinite supply, but shh

mikoto-chan
question
-
mikoto-chan
is a LUKS encrypted USB stick without header enough for a cold storage?
-
mikoto-chan
as long as the keyfile is encrypted and it's on a USB stick and I don't have my seed or wallet that should be pretty secure right?
-
klaxa
if that's the only copy and you lose it you will hate yourself so maybe have another usb with the same data
-
klaxa
and regularly check they still work :P
-
mikoto-chan
thanks :P
-
klaxa
i have no cold storage though i just keep my seeds in my password manager and trust that it's encrypted in there ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
-
klaxa
or rather i trust the pm's encryption
-
klaxa
but this way i can't accidentally lose my keys
-
klaxa
and nobody should get into my password manager in the first place
-
emagex
klaxa: hmm... maybe I should change it to 'printable' ;)
-
klaxa
just put "brrrrrrt"
-
emagex
-
DrNick2
I suspect you're more likely to lose your keys vs have them stolen
-
Mochi101
depends
-
DrNick2
Having your keys stored unencrypted where you keep your important papers feels like a good approch.
-
DrNick2
Unless your talking about huge amounts. Not sure what I'd do in that case. :-)
-
klaxa
unencrypted sounds bad, at least password protect it
-
DrNick2
You've got to think about your threat model. What are you protecting against in that case?
-
DrNick2
Someone breaking into your house and stealing the paper?
-
DrNick2
Then they need to recognise the importance of the info and use it.
-
DrNick2
Vs forgetting the password after hitting your head (or just with the passage of time).
-
DrNick2
If the risk of physical theft is high in your case, absolutely encrypt it.
-
klaxa
good point
-
Mochi101
What about a vengeful wife who wants to leave you?
-
moneromooo
Or a wily squirrel who wants to eat your paper seed backup ?
-
hashem
don't marry, no vengeful wife
-
hashem
or marry a dude
-
hashem
still no vengeful wife
-
moneromooo
Or feed squirrels till they're really really full.
-
hashem
say what now?
-
Mochi101
what
-
nioc
yes, treat your squirrels well
-
tasty
squirrels are always a threat
-
hashem
in the tropics i have no squirrels
-
hashem
just bats
-
hashem
rats
-
hashem
and mosquitoes
-
hashem
am i to treat them well also? o_0
-
hashem
and lizards
-
nioc
don't know about mosquitos :D

querens
Hello everybody. I've encountered the next warning "Transaction spends more than one very old output. Privacy would be better if they were sent separately." As far as I understood it's a simple warning and I can go simply with "yes" option. But I'm troubled that I don't completely understand what's it about and how to deal with it in "proper" way and not having such warnings
-
moneromooo
The fake output selection algorithm is heavily biased towards recent outs.
-
moneromooo
So if you have several old outs in your rings, they are more likely to be the real spends, since it is less likely they'd be randomly selected.
-
querens
moneromooo: ty. So what can I do in order to calm this algoritm down? Make a transaction to myself for example?
-
moneromooo
The most private way is probably to spend one of these old outs to yourself then wait some random amount of time.
-
moneromooo
Well, N-1 of them if you have N.
-
moneromooo
Or just ignore. It can happen by random chance too.
-
querens
moneromooo: many thanks
-
Mochi101
Some old outputs are expensive to spend. :(
-
moneromooo
Do you really mean that, or do you mean they're not worth shit ? :)
-
Mochi101
I mean it.
-
Mochi101
Pre Bulletproof outputs.
-
moneromooo
Oh. Hrm. I'm surprised, I expected old outs to make smaller txes per input.
-
moneromooo
Pre-rct you mean ?
-
Mochi101
ah... yes
-
Mochi101
Outputs that are like 4-5 years old.
-
Mochi101
Is my gray showing?
-
moneromooo
If they're pre ringct and mixable, they're used in the exact same way as rct outs, so same cost.
-
Mochi101
hmmm
-
moneromooo
If they're pre ringct and unmixable, they're spent in a v1 tx, with ring size 1, and that's got to be a lot smaller than a rct tx.
-
moneromooo
I think you're mistaken.
-
moneromooo
Unless there's a case I'm forgetting...
-
moneromooo
Could it be they *feel* expensive because it is when spending lots of outs that aren't worth shit ?
-
Mochi101
could be so
-
Mochi101
:D
-
Mochi101
yeah... it may be that
-
Mochi101
Just checking one of my wallets... oldest output is at about block 2.5m
-
Mochi101
so not really old.
-
moneromooo
Dude.
-
moneromooo
I just realized...
-
moneromooo
We could get some people get in here to chat, and they'd be born after monero started...
-
moneromooo
Wild.
-
Mochi101
This other wallet has outputs from 1.8m
-
Mochi101
lol... yeah... that'd be wild
-
moneromooo
"Did you know, before you were born, people were using a non private cryptocurrency called bitcoin"
-
moneromooo
"lol, what is privacy ?"
-
moneromooo
I think the chat would go that way.
-
moneromooo
Life sucks.
-
Mochi101
Young people have no expectations of privacy.
-
moneromooo
And their children will have none of freedom. Their grandchildren of life. They won't have grand grand children.
-
» moneromooo feeling down rn
-
querens
Do you think that all the liberties will eventually shrinks to 0?
-
nioc
Happy Birthday montero
-
moneromooo
Historically, they do go down till a revolution (usually helped by hunger), then they drop to 0 at once, shit gets really bad for a generation, then it gets better than it used to be if yo're lucky.
-
moneromooo
It's not always down though, there's a random walk. But typically the average is slowly down.
-
moneromooo
And as long as people are fed, they can go a long while before revolting agianst the increasing erosion of freedom.
-
Mochi101
yeap
-
moneromooo
In a way, if your problem is privacy rather than hunger, you're in the lucky part of hte world.
-
Mochi101

-
querens
all the successful revolutions I know have happened thanks to the elites
-
moneromooo
What is "elites" ?
-
querens
those who have the means of power
-
raecarruth
folk like you moneromooo :)
-
moneromooo
So, the people who led a succesful revolution ended up in power ? That sounds circuitous.
-
moneromooo
Because you can't mean that the people who were in power led a succesful revolution against themselves :)
-
moneromooo
(or do you ?)
-
moneromooo
s/circuitous/circular/
-
querens
There are a lot of groups of power. Usually some of them trying to gain all the control overthrowing other groups
-
moneromooo
Ah, I see what you mean.
-
moneromooo
The French revolution, I think, was from the hungry people I believe.
-
moneromooo
The Romanian revolution wasn't from elites either I think.
-
moneromooo
But that doesn't prove you wrong of course, since those are just two points.
-
querens
Nah, I don't thinks so at all. Some "progressive" aristocrats are always behind the scenes.
-
querens
From time to time they dig their own graves though
-
moneromooo
OK, re-reading, you said "thanks to the elites", which is less strong that what I originally interpreted it as, so OK, I'm ready to believe you here.
-
moneromooo
I originally got that as "organized by", which wasn't a fair interpretation.
-
querens
this is quite fair interpretation
-
Mochi101
What about the Monerevolution?
-
DrNick2
Ha! You guys should checkout the Revolutions podcast. Right up your alley. :-)
