<naphtha:kyun.host> what is that
-
m-relay
<naphtha:kyun.host> does it work with matrix
-
m-relay
<naphtha:kyun.host> .bal
-
m-relay
<naphtha:kyun.host> no worky 😿
-
m-relay
<frightsi:waifuhunter.club> how much do you guys make from solo mining per month
-
m-relay
<frightsi:waifuhunter.club> or p2pool
-
m-relay
<gfdshygti53:monero.social> like 15$ or so (free electricity)
-
gravimatrix
that sucks
-
m-relay
<gfdshygti53:monero.social> It's mainly to burn the production surplus
-
m-relay
<frightsi:waifuhunter.club> i make like 15¢
-
m-relay
<sadlittlewannabesamurai> i have ~¢40 rn and have been p2pool mining in the mini sidechain for only a few days
-
m-relay
<sadlittlewannabesamurai> i am entirely unconcerned in regards to electricity costs
-
m-relay
<sadlittlewannabesamurai> i have ~¢40 worth of monero rn and have been p2pool mining in the mini sidechain for only a few days
-
m-relay
<frightsi:waifuhunter.club> I don't mine all the time anyway.
-
m-relay
<sadlittlewannabesamurai> i could play a game of pac-man with that much monero
-
m-relay
<mwkbarnjbblghgo4gudng:karp.lol> solo mining? On what?
-
Afroboy
Hi, what the best mining software for linux on server with latest intel CPUs? (cli)
-
moneromooo
I think xmrig.
-
m-relay
<frencewise118_61762> Hey,
-
m-relay
<frencewise118_61762> @everyone I’ve made $437K+ with their alerts, Make as much as you want;;

m-relay
<frightsi:waifuhunter.club> scam
-
rahl
just getting started with monero. trying to wrap my head around the basics. using the cli version. Have another machine where I can use tails to set up a paper wallet if need be
-
rahl
So, I'm thinking paper wallet or not, run node? (can't atm for lack of space), how to get going without downloading the full blockchain...
-
rahl
I do also have multiple pages from the docs open :)
-
rahl
Presumably I have to pick a semi-trusted 3rd party source for now
-
moneromooo
Yes. You gotta hope those people are not spying on you. Most probably are.
-
moneromooo
A pruned chain is... maybe 60 GB ?
-
rahl
Don't have a stable enough home setup currently, and can't afford to add 60GB to my vps
-
moneromooo
Your node does not have to run all the time.
-
rahl
hmm ok
-
rahl
I got bitten with bitcoin block chain in the past. Quite a few times. Where pruned chain gets a little corrupted and I had to re download the entire chain again. In the end it also showed up faults in the external hdd it was on.
-
rahl
The repeated downloads of the full chain was quite a problem. Any ideas if it's more or less likely with monero?
-
moneromooo
It is.
-
m-relay
<sadlittlewannabesamurai> are there any downsides to running a pruned node
-
moneromooo
Compared to running an unpruned node: you can't get the details of most old txes, and you can't serve these to another node. Not much of a problem.
-
moneromooo
Compared to not running a node: you can't use monero (unless you capitulate to some person to make their the arbiter of your choices).
-
moneromooo
rahl: if you have a broken disk, it will sooner or later corrupt the chain.
-
moneromooo
Just get rid of it.
-
m-relay
<rucknium:monero.social> rahl: Don't use a HDD, especially an external one, for a Monero node. Monero requires a lot of random reads. If you use a HDD, it can take weeks to sync. With a SSD it will take days at most.
-
rahl
m-relay: ack, much obliged
-
m-relay
<sadlittlewannabesamurai> yeah i have an SSD and it only took around one day to sync the unpruned node
-
rahl
-
m-relay
<sadlittlewannabesamurai> i personally wouldn't even use an external SSD because of the overhead USB has compared to both SATA and PCIe
-
rahl
fair
-
rahl
was my main concern
-
moneromooo
The rpi is bad at running a node. I think it's bad I/O performance and no HW AES (though not sure how much HW AES mattesr nowadays).
-
rahl
sorry rucknium: ack, much obliged ;)
-
moneromooo
There are other arm boards that are much better at it though.
-
rahl
moneromooo: good to know
-
rahl
arm boards that have a more direct ssd connection?
-
moneromooo
I have not much experience of this so I won't comment further.
-
rahl
np, I appreciate the help
-
rahl
wonder how this might shape up
pine64.org/rockpro64
-
moneromooo
I think this one qualifies as good.
-
m-relay
<rucknium:monero.social> IIRC, people do recommend rockpro64 for running monero nodes on single board computers
-
m-relay
-
rahl
cool.
-
rahl
So running a pruned node is one thing. Then it's the choice of hot or cold wallet; cold being paper or hardware?
-
m-relay
<shermand100:matrix.org> In my experience creating PiNodeXMR I'd suggest the Rock Pi 4 series for value.
-
m-relay
<shermand100:matrix.org> Same processor and specs but cheaper accessories like the case, expansion boards etc.
-
m-relay
<shermand100:matrix.org> They also have a newer Rock Pi 5 that's even better
-
rahl
cheers
-
rahl
Also also, to zmq or not?
-
rahl
I tend to default to turning things off at least until I have some vague notion of what they're doing
-
m-relay
<ctrej:matrix.org> Its very hard to beat a used mini PC in value. You can get an i5 6500T, 8GB ram, 256GB SSD for about 100€ - including case, heatsink, fan, and power supply
-
m-relay
<ctrej:matrix.org> Idle power is about 6W, monerod takes about 2% of the CPU
-
m-relay
<sneedlewoods_xmr:matrix.org> why not both!? cold wallet for big amounts and long term storage, hot wallet for pocket money that you can easily spend
-
m-relay
<sneedlewoods_xmr:matrix.org> and personally I prefer paper over hardware
-
rahl
ctrej: also totally reasonable, thanks
-
rahl
sneedlewoods_xmr: ok, that makes sense. Slowly building a better picture
-
m-relay
<kilopool:matrix.org> Does P2Pool reject valid solutions sent for the previous job (which can happen frequently with high-latency connections)?
-
sech1
P2Pool remembers 4 last mining jobs sent, so it shouldn't reject previous job
-
m-relay
<kilopool:matrix.org> Ok, thank you.
-
m-relay
<sadlittlewannabesamurai> would it be in any way worthwhile to try compiling the Monero tools on modern OpenVMS
-
m-relay
<sadlittlewannabesamurai> oh it wouldn't VSI says that virtualization support is a requirement for OpenVMS
