You can use tor with your monerod to 1. Relay transactions to other nodes via onion (tx-proxy) 2. Connect your wallet via onion (rpc) (onion set to restricted rpc port) 3. disable incoming connections as a consequence of syncing blocks over tor exit nodes (--proxy clearnet connections to tor)

Depends on your risk tolerance. Most people do only 2. 1+2 is ideal for those hoping to run monero in a more private manner than default. 3 is "paranoid" mode

Without 1, transactions are relayed to and from clearnet nodes. Node a 123.123.123.123 sends tx to node b 124.124.124.124 etc

With --tx-proxy and --anonymous-inbound, transactions are sent out over onion to peers who have anonymous-inbound enabled. Anonymous inbound lets you set the hidden service to advertise to peers

If i have a node with --tx-proxy, and connect my wallet to it to send a tx, instead of it going through dandelion++ over clearnet, it will only send the tx to a hidden service (onion or i2p)

Which gives you both the privacy of using a remote onion, + the security of running your own node. This is 1

For 3, --proxy forces those 123.123.123.123 peers to be connected to over tor (exit nodes. Same as if you visit a clearnet website over tor).

Due to the nature of tor / exit nodes, you cannot receive incoming connections while maintaining privacy, so incoming connections to your public ip arent possible

You arent able to participate entirely over onion.

p2p blockchain sync is "clearnet only" (no onion), but 3. Allows you to connect over tor by using a basic socks proxy (same as using tor browser to visit a website)

Incoming connections arent possible with 3, so while your node will work just fine, it will not be able to contribute to nodes who similarly do not have incoming connections enabled

Meaning the only nodes youll ever connect to, are nodes which DO have clearnet incoming enabled
