Mining only needs a bit more than 2gb

Node needs ram for connected wallets to restore, finding decoys, and for incoming/outgoing txpool

Your ram increases depending on how many peers the node has. If the node is for personal use (~1 wallet connected at a time), and minimal p2p connections, you can get away with using less ram. A "public node" i would think implies public rpc or a well connected p2p node. Both of which should have ample amounts of ram. Not enough ram for

rpc(wallets) will cause for slow operation, and not enough for p2p can cause OOM during traffic spikes
