<mark:chat.nicecrew.digital> We always hear rumors about big crime organizations like the Russian mafia or Mexican cartels allegedly using Monero, but where would they even find that much liquidity?
-
m-relay
<mark:chat.nicecrew.digital> I don't think I buy it.
-
m-relay
<mark:chat.nicecrew.digital> And how would they even on ramp/off ramp it? I don't think the infrastructure is there.
-
m-relay
<mark:chat.nicecrew.digital> For it to be possible it would have to be bottom up, starting with the street sellers accepting Monero, kicking up the earnings, and thus having the organization accumulate over time from small buyers, but I'm not sure how they would even turn that Monero into money they can use.
-
m-relay
<mark:chat.nicecrew.digital> Even small-medium size sellers on DNM talk on Dread and such about the burden of changing Monero into fiat, there's only so much you can do with gift cards and prepaid visas.
-
m-relay
<mark:chat.nicecrew.digital> I still believe the Monero infrastructure is not mature enough to be used large-scale, even in black/grey markets.
-
as2333
assuming the mafia exists, it should have its own infrastructure
-
as2333
but when I see "russian mafia" I know I'm looking at CIA propaganda
-
as2333
mexican cartels, that's DEA - those have their own banks
-
m-relay
<privacyx:monero.social> Cant they just exchange for other crypto like btc or bch etc then off ramp to fiat also there is off ramps but volume is not big enough yet
-
m-relay
<dufebo98:monero.social> Is there a ddos on monero network? Why so many transactions
-
rbrunner
Looks normal to me? Only a handful of tx waiting in the pool also. "DDOS" usually results in *thousands* of waiting transactions, not 20
-
jungly
On the p2pool, there 547 miners atm. If the number goes to say 5000, will the uncles approach be enough to make sure all the work by all miners is accounted for?
-
jungly
Is there a write up on how this can scale to thousands of miners?
-
moneromooo
There can be several p2p chains mining in parallel.
-
jungly
Makes sense, but we do cap the variance for each chain then, right? iirc, this is what bitcoin's p2pool was doing - multiple chains, right?
-
sech1
There are 1500 miners on p2pool-mini already, and it works fine. Yes, uncles approach will work as long as miners don't lag more than 3 p2pool blocks (~30 seconds). 30 seconds is more than enough to broadcast a share to p2pool

<ammortel:monero.social> Hello, I try to setup SSL on my node. I did a monero-gen-ssl-cert nd launched monerod with - -rpc-ssl, - -rpc-ssl-private-key and - -rpc-ssl-certificate. However, now I cannot connect to my node anymore from my wallet. (It worked previously). Should I not enable SSL? What Should I do please
-
sech1
Did you add "--daemon-ssl enabled" to your wallet command line? Assuming that you use the official CLI wallet. You should check wallet logs because it usually auto-detects SSL
-
m-relay
<ammortel:monero.social> With my CLI it works also without that flag appparently. I Was actually trying to sync from GUI / Monerujo / cake wallet
-
m-relay
<ammortel:monero.social> GUI also works. Just cannot sync on monerujo and cake wallet. There is a SSL checkbox on cakewallet and none on monerujo but it still doesnt work
-
m-relay
<ofrnxmr:xmr.mx> ssl certs are generated automatically
-
m-relay
<ammortel:monero.social> Is it safe to use --rpc-login without --rpc-ssl=enabled? I've read somewhere that everyone could then read my login credentials by analyzing the traffic
-
m-relay
<ofrnxmr:xmr.mx> Ssl doesnt protect the traffic
-
m-relay
<ofrnxmr:xmr.mx> self signed certs are easily mitm'd
-
m-relay
<ofrnxmr:xmr.mx> I don't know the correct answer for sure, but i think the auth is not sent in plainntext
-
sech1
Yes, auth is not plaintext
-
m-relay
<elongated:matrix.org> Cert pinning should be an option.
-
m-relay
<ofrnxmr:xmr.mx> Only works in cli
-
m-relay
<elongated:matrix.org> Hopefully gui and other wallets add it
-
m-relay
<monero.arbo:matrix.org> the solution is to present the fingerprint on first connect for the user to manually verify, then store it and alert the user if it changes
-
m-relay
<ofrnxmr:xmr.mx> But.. cert changes on each node restart
-
m-relay
<ofrnxmr:xmr.mx> Unless you run the node yourself, then theres no indication whether youre getting mitm or if the node actually restarted
-
m-relay
<monero.arbo:matrix.org> monerod has an option to used a fixed cert which is what I do
-
m-relay
<monero.arbo:matrix.org> pretty sure it even ships with scripts to generate the cert?
-
m-relay
<elongated:matrix.org> That should be fixed ?
-
m-relay
<ofrnxmr:xmr.mx> Its intentional
-
m-relay
<elongated:matrix.org> Fingerprint ?
-
m-relay
<ofrnxmr:xmr.mx> Yea
-
m-relay
<ofrnxmr:xmr.mx> To avoid tracking node across ip changes
-
m-relay
<elongated:matrix.org> Okay, is there a flag to stop this ? I already have static ip
-
m-relay
<elongated:matrix.org> And my tx go through tx-proxy anyways
-
m-relay
<ofrnxmr:xmr.mx> Yes
-
m-relay
<ofrnxmr:xmr.mx> ^

sech1- I really love the design and what p2pool has achieved. I am just trying to figure out how we can reboot p2pool for bitcoin too.
-
jungly
sech1- in your understanding are there any show stoppers if we tried to use the monero p2pool design for bitcoin? I love the uncles idea. We have more payout constraints with bitcoin, but those can be solve separately.
-
sech1
The showstopper is that bitcoin miners are big corporations now, and they don't care. They either use their own pools, or a few centralized pools
-
sech1
p2pool works best when it's feasible for individual miners to mine
-
jungly
That is true, the bitcoin mining industry is so dominated by centralised pool operators, it sucks
-
jungly
But don't you think there might be long tail of miners who care about stepping away from big corporation pools but they don't have an alternative really
-
sech1
not in bitcoin
-
sech1
just check out SHA256 ASIC prices. An average Joe can't afford them
-
jungly
true again.. but there are smaller operations with 2/3 miners who do want to stay away from corporations..
-
jungly
I agree it seems like bitcoin is a lost cause because of the centralised mining really
-
jungly
it is amazing that you have 1500 miners on p2pool 👏
-
sech1
1500 on p2pool-mini, and 500+ more on p2pool-main
-
sech1
precisely because anyone with a computer/laptop can mine Monero

<tqwera:matrix.org> Is exolix com considered trusted XMR Exchange by the comuinty?
-
m-relay
<tqwera:matrix.org> Or exch cx
-
m-relay
<tqwera:matrix.org> Is exolix com considered a trusted XMR Exchange by the community?
-
m-relay
<ofrnxmr:xmr.mx> trusted? Sure. But as centralized swap points, YMMV
-
m-relay
<ofrnxmr:xmr.mx> Exch has their own reserves but s higher rate, and exolix will KYC you if you trigger their systems
-
m-relay
<monerobull:matrix.org> exch 5% fee to buy xmr
-
m-relay
<ofrnxmr:xmr.mx> Bsx 5% to buy xmr too
-
m-relay
<tqwera:matrix.org> Really? Im checking thier xmr to ltc almost no fee 0.2 cent
-
m-relay
<tqwera:matrix.org> It's almost unbelievable
-
m-relay
<monerobull:monero.social> >to buy XMR
-
m-relay
<tqwera:matrix.org> oh
-
m-relay
-
m-relay
<ofrnxmr:xmr.mx> Yeah, selling xmr for ltc on bsx is ~0.5%
-
m-relay
<ofrnxmr:xmr.mx> The market says "ltc can be bought at market. Xmr cannot"
-
m-relay
<ofrnxmr:xmr.mx> 0.17%
-
sech1
yes, buying xmr is not easy, there's a real shortage of coins
-
sech1
selling xmr is easy, almost no fees at exch and exolix
-
great_taste
I'd sell my xmr but at much higher prices
-
m-relay
<snowman:tetaneutral.net> It’s going to get even worse as the big players get subsidized electricity rates for helping the power companies
-
BlueyHealer
Yeah, but selling XMR is harder because how'd you get the money to you without a KYC method? Only cash in-person or in mail comes to mind, which is not always doable.
