<gogo2464:matrix.org> Hello somebody shows me how to use monero over tor... I lost his tutorial... could you show me it again please?
-
br-m
<ofrnxmr:xmr.mx> Monerod? Or monero wallet?
-
br-m
<gogo2464:matrix.org> monero wallet gui
-
br-m
<gogo2464:matrix.org> @ofrnxmr:xmr.mx
-
net0xide
In Cake Wallet > Node settings, there you can enable TOR.
-
br-m
<ofrnxmr:xmr.mx> Settings -> socks5proxy
-
br-m
<ofrnxmr:xmr.mx> Monero wallet gui running in what mode?
-
br-m
<ofrnxmr:xmr.mx> With a remote node? Or running its own node?
-
br-m
<ofrnxmr:xmr.mx> If own node, add --proxy=127.0.0.1:9050 to the daemon startup flags field
-
br-m
<ofrnxmr:xmr.mx> (thats assuming youre running tor daemon) tor browser is a diff port (9150 i think)
-
br-m
<gogo2464:matrix.org> I have no own niode
-
br-m
<gogo2464:matrix.org> at leastr I could run in whonix
-
net0xide
Yeah! Whonix is excellent for running anonymous & onion services <3 And monero runs perfectly there :D
-
br-m
<gogo2464:matrix.org> Yes, the Monero GUI (Graphical User Interface) wallet does pass traffic over Tor by default.
-
br-m
<ofrnxmr> @gogo2464:matrix.org: Using whonix? Yes
-
br-m
<gan:skhron.org> the daemon have to be manually configured and separably ran, furthermore there's an option to use Tor for price fetchers or whatnot in Monero GUI wallet software itself
-
br-m
<gogo2464:matrix.org> I am currently not in whonix @ofrnxmr:monero.social do I require tor to use monero ?
-
br-m
<ofrnxmr:xmr.mx> See my prior messages
-
br-m
<ofrnxmr:xmr.mx> ^ > <@ofrnxmr:xmr.mx> Settings -> socks5proxy
-
net0xide
gogo2464: I don't think so. I use monero in my GrapheneOS with Cake Wallet without connect it to TOR network.
-
br-m
<ofrnxmr:xmr.mx> tor is not required. Correct. It is required if you want privacy from your isp or the node operator
-
br-m
<shortwavesurfer2009> Hey @rucknium:monero.social is your Monero node operational?
-
br-m
<shortwavesurfer2009> A retoswap user found they were out of sync with the mainnet and I found out that I'm out of sync as well and we were both using your node.
-
nioc
rucknium mentioned at the last MRL meeting that he is taking a break for a short while while continuing running the MRL meetings

<snjya:matrix.org> Hi guys, bot about 8 xmr from kraken day before yesterday, now kraken is asking for receivers name when I am trying to withdraw it to my desktop wallet. Should I tell kraken that its my own wallet? If I do, will xmr sent from my own wallet get traced in future?
-
br-m
<snjya:matrix.org> Huh, no response? Am I shadow banned for being a fresh account here or something?
-
br-m
<snjya:matrix.org> Anyone?, Is this even the customer care for monero xmr cryptocurrency?
-
sech1
-
sech1
this is customer care ^
-
Bunnyh
no this isn't "customer care", I was thinking about this but can't actually answer, too noob here
-
Bunnyh
there can be no customer care for how to ensure your privacy unfortunately :)
-
Bunnyh
that's an oxymoron mostly
-
sech1
Just tell Kraken it's your wallet. They need it for some stupid AML law. They can't trace it anyway
-
br-m
-
Bunnyh
the question is decent though and cuts to the core of monero features. hoping someone answers
-
jpk68
Pro tip: don't use centralized exchanges
-
jpk68
Regardless of what you do though, you also probably shouldn't say publicly how much XMR you own
-
moneromooo
I assume kraken already has your name etc. Logically, if you tell them you're withdrawing to your wallet, you're not giving them much useful information since if you intended to pay Alice instead, you could withdraw to your wallet, then pay Alice from that.
-
Bunnyh
I understood the question pertained to what exactly could Kraken determine about your financial activity after admitting the wallet is yours
-
moneromooo
However, the wallet address can be deemed to be publicly known, so that if you withdraw some monero from, eg, Binance to that same address, you can assume everyone will know you did it.
-
Bunnyh
right, but wouldn't the amount from such a transaction be invisible though?
-
Bunnyh
to Kraken
-
moneromooo
Well, you can't assume it is, since Binance knows it.
-
moneromooo
I'm assuming thy all pool the info between themselves.
-
Bunnyh
well unless binance shares it to Kraken. well that's an interesting assumption
-
Bunnyh
but not too far fetched even
-
moneromooo
It's the standard assumption of assuming all parties not controlled by you do collude. It's not an opinion on the likelihood of these two particular parties to do so.
-
moneromooo
I would not think they share it between themselves, but a likelier case is a third party getting info from both of them.
-
jpk68
Bunnyh: The fact that the recipient's name needs to be entered in the first place is proof enough.
-
jpk68
If you can trust them not to encroach on your data, why would they ask for this?
-
br-m
<snjya:matrix.org> > <moneromooo> I assume kraken already has your name etc. Logically, if you tell them you're withdrawing to your wallet, you're not giving them much useful information since if you intended to pay Alice instead, you could withdraw to your wallet, then pay Alice from that.
-
br-m
<snjya:matrix.org> Yes they do. They also asked for a video of my head turning left to right and then left again from my laptop. I want to withdraw monero xmr to the same laptop. Does it affect the traceability if the verification video and getmonero wallet are on the same laptop? I just want to know what would happen if I tell kraken that I am [... too long, see

br-m
<snjya:matrix.org> Huh?! > <jpk68> Pro tip: don't use centralized exchanges
-
br-m
<snjya:matrix.org> sech1: Okay, I just did this.
-
jpk68
Yeah, this is why (see: verification video)
-
moneromooo
Jesus. WTF.
-
jpk68
Once it's withdrawn, no, they cannot see where it went.
-
moneromooo
That basically means "we can deepfake you now, kthxbai". Crazy shit.
-
jpk68
Converting it to Litecoin would also probably make it worse since there's a risk of time correlation attacks.
-
moneromooo
Where the video is recorded doesn't matter. Unless really involved stuff.
-
sech1
it's not a video, it's an interactive selfie to compare with your ID photo
-
sech1
checked by AI
-
sech1
and probably stored on their servers anyway, "just in case"
-
br-m
<snjya:matrix.org> Okay, now the screen says processing. I know I need to wait 20 minutes for them to send it. I had clicked on 'this is my own wallet' or something like that before clicking confirm withdraw.
-
br-m
<snjya:matrix.org> moneromooo: Wtf for what?! I clicked on ' this is my own wallet' like some guy above told me to! Should I have entered something else?
-
moneromooo
You entered the best option.
-
moneromooo
I was just boggling about having to send a face video. This is so invasive it beggars belief they're asking for that.
-
moneromooo
It's basically something a scammer would ask.
-
moneromooo
You're sure you're on the right website, right ?
-
br-m
<snjya:matrix.org> sech1: Nah, the checkbox said that the video would be deleted after verification. I am verified as "pro" already.
-
jpk68
Like that's going to happen
-
jpk68
I'm sure everyone has already heard this, but Discord is doing this exact same 'interactive selfie' thing
-
br-m
<snjya:matrix.org> Thanks! > <moneromooo> You entered the best option.
-
sech1
It's "trust me bro" about video deletion
-
br-m
<snjya:matrix.org> moneromooo: What's invasive? Its just a video to confirm someone is not scamming with my name and id! It won't affect the traceability of the xmr I bought..so its all good.
-
br-m
<snjya:matrix.org> moneromooo: Yes, I am sure.
-
jpk68
Why do you care about traceability if you just gave them your ID?
-
br-m
<snjya:matrix.org> sech1: So you mean they retain it anyways? I am super sure the text beside checkbox said it would be deleted after verification! Kraken is a regulated!
-
br-m
<snjya:matrix.org> jpk68: I gave my id because that was the only way to create a kraken account!

-
sech1
discord uses the same provider for ID verification
-
sech1
in fact, almost everyone uses them
-
br-m
<snjya:matrix.org> Oh
-
br-m
<snjya:matrix.org> sech1: My son uses discord
-
nes
what matrix client do you guys use?
-
br-m
<snjya:matrix.org> sech1: So my pay stubs, utility bills and bank statements will be permanently copied by kraken? What do I do?
-
sech1
Don't upload more IDs and docs to various sites. Especially to discord
-
br-m
<snjya:matrix.org> I only have uploaded docs to Schwab, my work related sites, tax related websites and now to kraken. I don't use discord.
-
br-m
<snjya:matrix.org> Okay, the kraken websites says here that the customer data will be deleted after 5 years once the relationship has ended. This means they will delete my data after 5 years after I close my account. Am I interpreting this correctly?
-
geonic
sounds right. Kraken is a legitimate exchange, I would trust them as much as I trust any bank.
-
br-m
<snjya:matrix.org> Okay good.
-
br-m
<snjya:matrix.org> Okay, I see the xmr I withdrew on my desktop. 💘
-
geonic
enjoy responsibly
-
br-m
<snjya:matrix.org> You read my mind, thanks you all, bye
