what does very long mean for you? seconds? minutes? hour?
-
br-m
<kiersten5821:matrix.org> i haven't synced lately but it looks like the remote sync took 30 minutes, the local node sync takes like an hour+
-
selsta
can you clarify if you mean catching up the daemon sync for 1 month, or if you mean syncing when opening a wallet?
-
br-m
<kiersten5821:matrix.org> i mean syncing when opening a wallet for the remote sync and daemon sync for the local node sync
-
selsta
remote node sync over tor?
-
br-m
<kiersten5821:matrix.org> clearnet
-
br-m
<kiersten5821:matrix.org> both numbers clearnet
-
br-m
<kiersten5821:matrix.org> this is why i dont support the unlimited block size proposals it will be impossible to sync after like a week
-
selsta
synced up local node, opening a wallet after a month takes around 15 seconds to scan on my system
-
selsta
with remote node probably 30-40 seconds
-
br-m
<kiersten5821:matrix.org> my remote node sync downloaded like 500 mb this is not sustainable for ordinary users
-
br-m
<kiersten5821:matrix.org> according to feather
-
br-m
<kiersten5821:matrix.org> i am seriously skeptical that it only takes 30 seconds to sync a wallet with a remote node after a month without opening it
-
br-m
<kiersten5821:matrix.org> because i just had to sync 21000 blocks for this one wallet and it took 30 minutes
-
selsta
it's my own remote node in neighbouring country
-
selsta
if you use a random remote node it might be overloaded or slow for other reasons
-
br-m
<kiersten5821:matrix.org> feather is connecting to some random dude's node apparently
-
br-m
<kiersten5821:matrix.org> all public remote nodes i used have been roughtly this slow though
-
br-m
<kiersten5821:matrix.org> i tried many
-
selsta
feather uses tor by default that's why i was curious
-
br-m
<kiersten5821:matrix.org> no, i disabled that
-
br-m
<kiersten5821:matrix.org> it would have taken an ungodly amount of time if that was still on
-
br-m
<elongated:matrix.org> With fcmp, lws wallets will be the way to go for most of the ppl.
-
selsta
i just timed it, 6000 blocks took 10 seconds on my own remote node in a neighbouring country, so for 21000 blocks it would be 35 seconds
-
br-m
<kiersten5821:matrix.org> doesnt sending my viewkey to the server defeat the entire point of the project
-
br-m
<elongated:matrix.org> @kiersten5821:matrix.org: Run your own lws server or use your uncles
-
selsta
there are also various optimizations still possible, we are nowhere near the limit of wallet scan speed
-
br-m
<kiersten5821:matrix.org> selsta: do you have super high bandwidth or something? i think if you restore a random wallet with feather/gui/cli at a blockheight 21k blocks behind and try some public nodes, you will see how painful it is, especially with anonymity networks
-
br-m
<kiersten5821:matrix.org> how long does it take your node to daemon sync a month of blocks? because i recall that is like 1 hour+
-
selsta
on mainnet my node syncs at 5.5 blocks / second
-
br-m
<kiersten5821:matrix.org> how is that even possible
-
br-m
<kiersten5821:matrix.org> my fastest ever is 3 and average 2
-
br-m
<kiersten5821:matrix.org> on good hardware
-
selsta
so yea that's an hour for 1 month
-
selsta
if i calculated it right
-
br-m
<kiersten5821:matrix.org> i think it was like < 1 when the spam was happening 2 years ago
-
selsta
5.5 blocks / second when there is no spam
-
br-m
<kiersten5821:matrix.org> i get around 2.5/s normally without the spam
-
selsta
what cpu do you have?
-
br-m
<kiersten5821:matrix.org> about 5 years old
-
br-m
<kiersten5821:matrix.org> i got the same speed on diff machines with diff cpus
-
br-m
<kiersten5821:matrix.org> the sync time should really be at a minimum of 100x faster than the generation time on reasonable hardware otherwise it will be impossible to sync, imagine a guy is offline for a few months and the ratio is 10x, has to wait a week to use the coin, i think the sync time is already cutting it close, mine is only 150x.

<assholeorangecat:matrix.org> Another one bites the dust. Germany planning to put an end to taxfree profits if you hold over one year. Who's gonna tell bitcoiners you can't win an economic war with a transparent blockchain? Well once they get a letter from the german IRS I think they might.

<pyratevevo:matrix.org> @assholeorangecat:matrix.org: Where's that meme.

Hey all, I can (or rather was about to) complete the Monero-GUI translations in French & Turkish but do I really have to provide my real name? Assuming the translations are done on
translate.monerodevs.org/projects/monero-gui this seems mandatory :/
-
br-m
<ofrnxmr:xmr.mx> real names not necessary
-
br-m
<john_xmr:matrix.org> Hey everyone! Seeing the latest news about governments tightening their grip, it’s clear we need to take Monero offline and into the streets. I’m launching a physical street activism campaign here in France to orange-pill the general public IRL. The digital community is strong, but everyday people won't look into privacy tech if they don't even know it exists.
-
br-m
<john_xmr:matrix.org> I just set up a Kuno to fund the printing and nationwide distribution of our first massive batch of custom, weather-resistant Monero stickers and posters.

ofrnxmr: Thanks, so I can just put random stuff for my name when registering and contributions are still going to be accepted? That's good to know. I'm going to take a closer look at the hosted weblate instance.

<plowsof:matrix.org> John Doe is taken

br-m
<ofrnxmr:xmr.mx> Yes. Probably put something related to your handle (like card puncher)
-
br-m
<plowsof:matrix.org> the translations will probably land here after approval

Thanks for all the help. plowsof: who approves the translations, just out of curiosity?

<user2570:unredacted.org> Any vibe coded project detectors here? ofrnAI maybe?
-
br-m
<user2570:unredacted.org> At first glance monerowire.com didn't look vibe coded to me.
-
br-m
<user2570:unredacted.org> What do you think?
-
br-m
<intr:unredacted.org> definitely vibe coderino
-
br-m
<user2570:unredacted.org> how do you detect?
-
br-m
<intr:unredacted.org> style wise it looks like every other vibe coded website. Content wise, just read some of the stuff. It reads like an AI response, like here
monerowire.com/resources
-
br-m
<intr:unredacted.org> also the footer
-
br-m
-
br-m
<intr:unredacted.org> who puts this in a footer?
-
br-m
<intr:unredacted.org> maybe he wrote some of the content himself though
-
br-m
<intr:unredacted.org> like, privacy is not optional? it's a news aggregator
-
br-m
<intr:unredacted.org> why does it need a cringe grok tier tagline in the footer
-
br-m
<user2570:unredacted.org> @intr:unredacted.org: Yeah text might be partially ai generated but overall not too bad.
-
br-m
<user2570:unredacted.org> What about the articles / blog posts?
-
br-m
<intr:unredacted.org> so far I'm leaning towards not AI
-
br-m
<user2570:unredacted.org> @user2570:unredacted.org: I was mainly asking about the website code?
-
br-m
<user2570:unredacted.org> Is it based on some engine?
-
br-m
<user2570:unredacted.org> @intr:unredacted.org: thanks for your opinion
-
br-m
<intr:unredacted.org> I'm seeing some punctuation issues you wouldn't get with AI
-
br-m
<user2570:unredacted.org> ok
-
br-m
<intr:unredacted.org> wait
-
br-m
<intr:unredacted.org> lol

-
br-m
-
br-m
<user2570:unredacted.org> I mean it looks clean to me with no layout artifacts and does not seem to be bloated
-
br-m
<intr:unredacted.org> struggling to think of some vibe coded websites apart from
moneroshamelist.com
-
br-m
<intr:unredacted.org> one thing I always notice is the thin, slightly rounded borders around a lot of elements

Okay, I extracted the tarball of the latest release and brought up the French translation to 100%. Just one string is puzzling me. On QtLinguist5, in the Transfer section there's a string only asking for a comment, it reads <context comment>. Any help would be really appreciated.
-
cardpuncher
If everything checks out, I can happily start updating the Turkish translation.
