<quicksilver:4d2.org> > <@john_xmr:matrix.org> @Josh Babb I'm using XMRig connected to the MoneroOcean pool. @sech1 It's a MacBook Pro, not an Air (active cooling is mandatory!). I'm pushing around 5,000 H/s (5 KH/s). I don't have a wattmeter at the wall right now, but it's Apple Silicon magic, so it barely sips power compared to a standard x86 rig.

br-m
<quicksilver:4d2.org> be careful mining on things that have a battery. hard to justify 20 cents in rewards for $200 replacement from degration
-
agent314
there are quite a few offers in the retoswap including many that dont require deposit, way to go guys!
-
br-m
<john_xmr:matrix.org> @quicksilver:4d2.org: Thanks for the heads up, quicksilver! I completely agree. That’s why I use AlDente to hard-limit my battery charge to 50% while it’s plugged in and mining. The battery is bypassed completely, and with the external cooling stand, thermals stay safe. I wouldn't risk a $2k+ machine for pennies without strict hardware management!
-
sech1
The battery is not bypassed unless it's physically unplugged
-
sech1
50% charge and low thermals are better than nothing
-
br-m
<john_xmr:matrix.org> Fair point on the semantics, sech1! True hardware bypass means opening the shell and pulling the connector, which I won't do on a daily driver. Software-limiting to 50% + active external cooling is just the most practical middle ground to keep the M5 hashing without cooking the lithium.

I'm still curious about the real power usage at the wall - with screen off, bluetooth off, only wi-fi and mining on
-
sech1
btw XMRig's dev branch has optimized code for ARM CPUs, 1-2% faster:
xmrig/xmrig 720325c
-
sech1
if you build it, you'll get a small hashrate boost
-
sech1
compared to the latest official release

<reedmarin:unredacted.org> Is the trail of bits FCMP++ audit coming out today?
-

<john_xmr:matrix.org> > <sech1> I'm still curious about the real power usage at the wall - with screen off, bluetooth off, only wi-fi and mining on
-
br-m
<john_xmr:matrix.org> Thanks for the tip on the dev branch, sech1! I'll pull that commit and compile it from source this weekend to squeeze out those extra hashes. ARM optimizations are always welcome. I'll see if I can borrow a physical wattmeter to give you the exact 'wall' numbers in full stealth mode (screen/BT off) once I have the new build running!

moneromooo
Wow. 4 hours late! At 300,000 km/s, it must mean you're.... about 29 AUs away. Neptunian ?
-
» moneromooo waits 8 hours for the reply
-
ro1m
All I got from that is that I'm on Neptune. Which I can promise you I'm not.
-
br-m
<john_xmr:matrix.org> Haha, the math checks out flawlessly, moneromooo! 🪐 Good afternoon from UTC+2 (Earth) bro.
-
ro1m
@john_xmr are you a native english speaker?
-
br-m
<pyratevevo:matrix.org> ro1m: Sounds exactly like what someone on Neptune would say.
-
ro1m
My cover has been blown.
-
moneromooo
Well, given you can reply so fast now, I assume you have FTL.
-
ro1m
Why do I keep hearing this? I don't type that fast. Unless everyone in here types at 12 wpm.
-
br-m
<john_xmr:matrix.org> No. I’m French
-
br-m
<gan:skhron.org> ro1m: My usual typing speed is around ~40 wpm or more
-
ro1m
Not bad. On average mine is 140 wpm, but if I really try I can get to 175 wpm.
-
br-m
<ravfx:xmr.mx> ro1m: Dvorak?
-
ro1m
No, qwerty.
-
br-m
<jbabb:cypherstack.com> be fair to ro1m: that level of speed doesn't require being a bot OR a crackhead
-
moneromooo
just choosing the right word. I'm partial to "a".
-
br-m
<jbabb:cypherstack.com> coffee'd do
-
br-m
<gan:skhron.org> I might be a crackhead personally, but that's beside the point
-
moneromooo
I tend to do bad with "frobnicatorily".
-
ro1m
gan you worry me.
-
br-m
<jbabb:cypherstack.com> @gan:skhron.org: have you tried promoting yourself to a professional?
-
ro1m
I personally believe a crackhead wouldn't be able to type, but that's just my perspective...
-
br-m
<gan:skhron.org> @jbabb:cypherstack.com: Nah, I just meant that my edge isn't the straightest one either
-
br-m
<jbabb:cypherstack.com> quite ironic to say while typing at crackhead speed
-
ro1m
@jbabb what happened to defending me?
-
br-m
<gan:skhron.org> To a professional crackhead, I suppose?
-
ro1m
I suppose so then.
-
br-m
<gan:skhron.org> I'm not doing that competitively yet
-
ro1m
What? Crack or typing?
-
br-m
<gan:skhron.org> Ain't cracking out it competitively yet
-
ro1m
That can mean a lot of things. Do some research.
-
br-m
<ofrnxmr:xmr.mx> You'd be surprised > <ro1m> I personally believe a crackhead wouldn't be able to type, but that's just my perspective...
-
br-m
<ofrnxmr:xmr.mx> I can type more than 140 wpm using my voice typing
-
ro1m
Are you claiming I'm a crackhead?
-
ro1m
How could you.
-
br-m
<ofrnxmr:xmr.mx> Amateur
-
ro1m
Can you reach 170?
-
moneromooo
On the autobahn, sure.
-
br-m
<sadgirlava:catgirl.cloud> I think my fastest on 15s monkeytype was 130wpm. But usually I'm sitting at 100
-
br-m
<sadgirlava:catgirl.cloud> I don't get how people get so fast
-
br-m
-
ro1m
It's just practice.
-
ro1m
Specifically not following the stupid "proper" way of hands on asd and f on your left hand and jkl on your right or whatever the hell it is.
-
br-m
<kiersten5821:matrix.org> it didn't let me start the race for some reason

<gan:skhron.org> Monero typespeeding tourney when?

That was terrible.

It's not supposed to have punctuation or anything

fix that

<kiersten5821:matrix.org> skill issue
-
ro1m
No, that was just hard and repetetive.
-
ro1m
repetitive*
-
br-m
<kiersten5821:matrix.org> you can't be claiming 170 after i destroyed you and you got 90 dude
-
ro1m
redo it without punctuation
-
br-m
<kiersten5821:matrix.org> you don't type with punctuation?
-
ro1m
I mean I still do.
-
ro1m
Just can't do 170 with it. Monkeytype I can because it's no punctuation or uppercase.
-
br-m
<kiersten5821:matrix.org> idk how to configure this to not have punctuation
-
br-m
<kiersten5821:matrix.org> i type the proper way though > <ro1m> Specifically not following the stupid "proper" way of hands on asd and f on your left hand and jkl on your right or whatever the hell it is.
-
br-m
<kiersten5821:matrix.org> that's probably why it's faster
-
ro1m
Try it again
-
br-m
<kiersten5821:matrix.org> the race glitched out again

<kiersten5821:matrix.org> proper way is faster evidently
-
br-m
<ravfx:xmr.mx> Qwerty was made first for marketting then for typewritter
-
br-m
<ravfx:xmr.mx> Dvorak was made with common sense
-
ro1m
I've never heard of that.
-
br-m
<ravfx:xmr.mx> The fact you can write "typewritter" using only the top row is no accident and is also no optimization
-
br-m
<ravfx:xmr.mx> ^ on qwerty
-
ro1m
^
-
br-m
<ravfx:xmr.mx> While dvorak have the layout optimized using language statistique to know the frequency utilisation of the keys and so optimise thr layout. Its why specific language dvorak are widely differents unlike all the other qwerty based lolness like Azerty
-
br-m
<albertlarsan68:albertlarsan.fr> bépo is quite good at being multi-language, apart from w being the farthest key on the keyboard
-
br-m
<kiersten5821:matrix.org> you realize the fastest typers use qwerty right? the dvorak marketing bs is insane
-
ro1m
qwerty is completely fine, it gets the job done perfectly for me.
