Are there even devices that can run Linux and aren't old?
-
BlueyHealer
Looked it up for Postmarket and the newest ones are 2021, wich isn't bad but means you'd have to get them secondhand still (although maybe there are some sealed ones sold like this). Fairphones cost a fortune. There's a Xiaomi which should be very accessible, but apparently they're basically impossible to unlock now. PinePhone is really interesting but heard bad things about at least the Pro version from some owners I know, although really wonder if
-
BlueyHealer
this is maybe not as bad as described.

<hbstark:matrix.org> This might not be the proper forum, but there should be lots of XMR users here who have encountered the same problem, so I'll give it a shot. I'm using the Monero GUI wallet in Simple Mode (bootstrap) and when I want to "create a new wallet using a hardware device", that is with a Ledger Nano X, there's an error message when I [... too long, see

hbstark: you have to export your view key
-
br-m
<hbstark:matrix.org> Here's what Ledger Support says about it.
-
br-m
<hbstark:matrix.org> On your Ledger device, choose whether to export the private view key to your computer:
-
br-m
<hbstark:matrix.org> 1. Approving view key export enables your computer to identify your transactions. However, if your computer is compromised, your transaction privacy might be at risk.
-
br-m
<hbstark:matrix.org> 2. Rejecting view key export optimizes privacy protection since the view key remains secure on your Ledger device. However, identifying your transactions will be slower.
-
br-m
<hbstark:matrix.org> You may have to press the device button twice, then wait for your addresses to be generated.
-
selsta
you have to export the view key
-
br-m
<hbstark:matrix.org> Maybe I could accept exporting the view key in a first wallet and then create a second wallet rejecting exporting the view key
-
selsta
it does not work when you reject it...
-
selsta
the device is too slow
-
br-m
<hbstark:matrix.org> Then what device would be fast enough to be able to reject the export, another model of Ledger, or a Trezor?
-
selsta
none, they all have slow SoCs
-
br-m
<hbstark:matrix.org> So is it possible at all to store everything regarding XMR on a hardware device?
-
selsta
what scenario are you trying to protect against?
-
br-m
<hbstark:matrix.org> hackers, thieves, you name it. I've been safe with cold storage for 9 years now without incidents. Only cable connected and nothing stored elsewhere.
-
selsta
exporting your view key does not allow a hacker or thieve to steal anything
-
br-m
<hbstark:matrix.org> only if my laptop is stolen
-
selsta
?
-
selsta
even if they steal your laptop they can't steal your funds
-
br-m
<hbstark:matrix.org> I'll try running the Monero GUI wallet in Advanced mode with a fully synced local node, to see if that changes anything during wallet creation with the Nano X
-
selsta
No it does not. You seem to be ignoring what I'm writing, It does not work when you reject the view key export, it does not matter which wallet mode or node you are using.
-
br-m
<ofrnxmr> Did you come here to ask a question, or to test things that dont work and tell us that they dont work
-
br-m
<hbstark:matrix.org> selsta: Gotcha.
-
br-m
<hbstark:matrix.org> I'll use what works. Thanks for the help.

<leah6866:matrix.org> Hello!

br-m
<leah6866:matrix.org> Transaction Method 1 ( I saw on DNMBible):
-
br-m
<leah6866:matrix.org> BTC Exchange -> BTC Wallet 1 -> (Trocador/OrangeFren/...) Convert to XMR -> XMR Wallet -> Convert back to BTC -> BTC Wallet 2 -> pay for goods.

<pw:xmr.mx> @leah6866:matrix.org: you literally asked the same shit and got responses, days ago.
-
br-m
<pw:xmr.mx> conversation you started is above this comment as well as replies below. > <@leah6866:matrix.org> Either I send it from Trocador to different subaddresses within the same BTC wallet, or I send it to a different BTC wallet each time.
-
br-m
<pw:xmr.mx> well kinda same I just read properly so I apologize and will reign it in
-
br-m
<pw:xmr.mx> but BTC > XMR > BTC isn't doing much for your privacy for the BTC.
-
br-m
<pw:xmr.mx> just swap what ever to XMR on trocador or basicswapdex and pay for the service in XMR, if possible
-
br-m
<pw:xmr.mx> or just CEX BTC > your wallet > service. your not doing anything illegal... right?
-
br-m
<leah6866:matrix.org> Does KYC Exchange consider swap services to be risk services?
-
br-m
<pw:xmr.mx> your CEX coin is 'clean' so its fine.
-
br-m
<pw:xmr.mx> trocador show ratings by letter for AML checks for swapping to XMR. you can press on the 'I' icon for more information on those ratings.
-
br-m
<pw:xmr.mx> LTC is faster and has much smaller fees fyi
-
br-m
<pw:xmr.mx> i recommend www.basicswapdex.com for your swapping though
-

<pw:xmr.mx> #basicswap:matrix.org

<pw:xmr.mx> actually decentralized on chain atomic swaps.

<leah6866:matrix.org> I’m mainly concerned that the KYC exchange might consider Trocador/OrangeFren to be risk services.

-
br-m
<leah6866:matrix.org> @pw:xmr.mx: I mean withdrawing directly from the KYC exchange to a Trocador/OrangeFren wallet address, any problem?
-
br-m
<pw:xmr.mx> send to your own wallet first.
-
br-m
<pw:xmr.mx> if your buying butcoin to swap, consider litecoin instead. for reasons I mentioned above.
-
br-m
<leah6866:matrix.org> I know I’m repeating myself a bit, I just want to make sure. Hope you don’t mind.
-
br-m
<pw:xmr.mx> no problem

<pw:xmr.mx> see responses from your last query below the comment I've quoted too > <@leah6866:matrix.org>

br-m
<leah6866:matrix.org> > send to your own wallet first.
-
br-m
<leah6866:matrix.org> So BTC Wallet 2 can be skipped, but BTC Wallet 1 can’t?
-
br-m
<leah6866:matrix.org> (BTC Exchange -> BTC Wallet 1 -> (Trocador/OrangeFren/...) Convert to XMR -> XMR Wallet -> Convert back to BTC -> BTC Wallet 2 -> pay for goods.)

<gentlemoose:matrix.org> Let me simplify the issue. You want non kyc aka 'dirty' btc to pay for goods. Your dilemma is between adding a swap service. > <@leah6866:matrix.org> Hello!
-
br-m
<gentlemoose:matrix.org> 1. depends on the goods and their provider. Dirty btc can be tainted and linked to you which is a problem no matter how you got it.
-
br-m
<gentlemoose:matrix.org> 2. adding swap service gives you the option to plausibly deny what happens after the counterparty. But you may get taxed. And yes it can be flagged.
-
br-m
<gentlemoose:matrix.org> 3. straight conversion to xmr from a kyc exchange is almost non existent and If it is, I would assume flagged as the state collects everything to use retroactively in the future. If they flag swap addresses, they are 10x likely to flag xmr trades.
-
br-m
<gentlemoose:matrix.org> My advice - kyc Btc is a ticking time bomb of compliance, taxes and other issues. Non kyc btc is one of the best digital sovereign asset you can own long term. If you spend, spend cash and other non monetary hedges. If you must spend btc, better spend kyc btc
-
br-m
<ofrnxmr:xmr.mx> non-kyc btc is not one of the best digital sovereign assets long term
-
br-m
<ofrnxmr:xmr.mx> Its hard as hell to spend today
-
br-m
<gentlemoose:matrix.org> We can debate that for a week and I am relatively sure I will win this one.
-
br-m
<ofrnxmr:xmr.mx> Its useless if it cant be realized into goods/services in the future, which is the path btc is already on
-
br-m
<ofrnxmr:xmr.mx> Try to spend "tainted" btc just about anywhere, see how far you get today
-
br-m
<gentlemoose:matrix.org> The fact you consider it has to be spent on goods and services says enough
-
br-m
<ofrnxmr:xmr.mx> Tainted = non-kyc btc that has a trail including hacks, coinjoins, or illicit services, but you just ended up with it
-
br-m
<ofrnxmr:xmr.mx> @gentlemoose:matrix.org: So it's supposed to be a per rock?
-

<gentlemoose:matrix.org> Do you spend your gold on goods and services ?

br-m
<ofrnxmr:xmr.mx> @gentlemoose:matrix.org: Ultimately, yes

<ofrnxmr:xmr.mx> I dont just hold it so that it has USD numbers on a screen going up
-
br-m
<gentlemoose:matrix.org> Mate, I won't do advance economic claaaes with you. At least not in xmr room.
-
br-m
<ofrnxmr:xmr.mx> Ok, student
-
br-m
<gentlemoose:matrix.org> @ofrnxmr:xmr.mx: Hold it, don't hold it, do whatever you wish. My advice to the guy was neither USD related, nor xmr circular economy related. Those are completely separate issues and you just come to give your freedom of speech
-
br-m
<gentlemoose:matrix.org> Last time I tried to help someone you appeared again to tell me how much you get it. It's okay fella.
-
br-m
<gentlemoose:matrix.org> Keep it up
-
br-m
<ofrnxmr> I will

br-m
<mehrdad_shaeri:matrix.org> I mean, the dollar itself has no value if it can’t be exchanged for goods.

<ofrnxmr> Your "help" didnt answer any of the users questions (which were convoluted on their own). You just rambled on about how btc is a great investment

<ofrnxmr> "do yOu SpEnD yOuR GolD??"

<ofrnxmr> the question was about spending btc, sir

br-m
<pw:xmr.mx> 😂

br-m
<ofrnxmr> One day i'll learn > <@pw:xmr.mx> yeah ofrn, dumbass. don't argue with BTC fanboys
-
br-m
<mehrdad_shaeri:matrix.org> And without someone willing to exchange it for something valuable, a blockchain is just wasted computing power. > <@pw:xmr.mx> he dollar is just an IOU. same as any paper currency
-
br-m
<gentlemoose:matrix.org> I'm a btc fanboy now aint I
-
br-m
<ofrnxmr> Not today... but one day
-
br-m
<ofrnxmr> @mehrdad_shaeri:matrix.org: Kyc btc, just like kyc btc mining, will always be valuable. Non-compliant btc is (not slowly) becoming harder and harder to use. But anyway, youre not supposed to use/spend it
-
br-m
<ofrnxmr> Just supposed to look at it, i guess
-
br-m
<ofrnxmr> See? Im learning
-
br-m
<ofrnxmr> But i still havent learned what btc is useful for, or where it's value comes from, if it cant be exchanged
-
br-m
<gentlemoose:matrix.org> Relax, your children will understand
-
br-m
<gentlemoose:matrix.org> Since you and your friend are trolling, let it be. > <@ofrnxmr> "do yOu SpEnD yOuR GolD??"
-
br-m
<gentlemoose:matrix.org> 1. On guy's 'spending' question I answered that it depends what goods are and I went from a.. let's label it 'tax friendly' or 'state threat' side, as that is how I read the question.
-
br-m
<gentlemoose:matrix.org> 2. Now, spending advice can be related to Gresham's Law where we naturally sort it from most sovereign to least sovereign monetary hedges that retain value relative to inflationary system. So in my mind Gold > non KYC Btc > silver > and we highly hope Xmr and not to dive in collectibles and art, RE, etc...
-
br-m
<gentlemoose:matrix.org> 3. For the guy spending may be btc only. If they run a local agora and his neighbors do only that, so be it. If not, I default to spending fiat first. Yes I know we all want to spend Xmr mainly. Believe me, I understand it.[... more lines follow, see

<ofrnxmr:xmr.mx> "same as btc does" "focus 95% on the protocol" bro, what?
-
br-m
<ofrnxmr:xmr.mx> btc protocol is dead in the water for 10 years
-
br-m
<ofrnxmr:xmr.mx> btc focuses on compliance, and how to ensure users and miners remain regulated, not on the protocol.
-
br-m
<ofrnxmr:xmr.mx> the cypherpunk btc users are near extinct
-
br-m
<ofrnxmr:xmr.mx> as are the cypherpunk btc use cases, since they rely on innovations that the protocol isnt going to make. the only progress btc makes, is regulation, industrial adoption, and compliance. sure, you can still pay for your chinese boat ride for 1btc, but claiming that my children will benefit from that as a non-kyc use case, is asinine.
