noobcake2465[m]
so you guys might be able to help me.
-
noobcake2465[m]
i sent some monero to a subwallet of mine, but it doesn't yet show back in my wallet
-
-
noobcake2465[m]
for example in this screenshot, you can see i sent 1.75 XMR to myself 2 days ago
-
noobcake2465[m]
i have tried a new wallet, with seed/height and it still isn't showing that missing 1.75XMR
-
noobcake2465[m]
i would have expected to see Received, 1.75XMR at some point
-
noobcake2465[m]
which would put me on a total of 3.3 not 1.6
-
Xair[m]
you regenerated the wallet with your seed, and let it resync, and still nothing?
-
noobcake2465[m]
correct
-
Xair[m]
do you run your own node locally or use a remote one?
-
noobcake2465[m]
i was using a remote node, but i am running my own one now locally
-
noobcake2465[m]
and it's fully synchronized
-
Xair[m]
I see, did you run the local node before/after regenerating the wallet? it's possible the remote node didn't correctly send out transaction info and your wallet didn't pick it up before (even though it exists)
-
Xair[m]
if it was before, I'd say try one last time to regenerate the wallet with the local node, and see how that goes
-
noobcake2465[m]
no, i was using a remote node when i sent the transaction
-
noobcake2465[m]
but then i decided to regenerate the wallet using my own local node
-
Xair[m]
well, what I mean, is that the remote node might not have informed your wallet of a new incoming transaction for some strange reason
-
Xair[m]
so it was never picked up
-
noobcake2465[m]
yeah, i have regenerated my wallet a few times now
-
noobcake2465[m]
ie made a new one from the seed
-
noobcake2465[m]
and it's not showing the incoming transaction
-
noobcake2465[m]
i've only used the official monero wallet from archlinux repo
archlinux.org/packages/community/x86_64/monero-gui
-
Xair[m]
I see, I had a similar issue once, but personally it was solved by regenerating my wallet using a local node
-
Xair[m]
so I'm unsure
-
Xair[m]
maybe someone else could help
-
Xair[m]
either way, I hope it gets solved, good luck man
-
noobcake2465[m]
yeah, well i'm wondering if i will ever see my money again
-
noobcake2465[m]
and if not i'd actually like to know what happened
-
Xair[m]
I am pretty certain you will, it's extremely difficult for money to just get "lost" in a blockchain, but getting the wallet to pick it up might involve some weird changes
-
Xair[m]
if your money is lost that would be a very significant bug :)
-
noobcake2465[m]
as i can imagine ๐
-
noobcake2465[m]
but i don't think creating yet another wallet and synchronizing it is going to fix the issue lol.
-
noobcake2465[m]
because i've already done that 3 times
-
Xair[m]
yeah, I don't think so either, maybe someone with more info on this stuff knows what happened
-
noobcake2465[m]
```
-
noobcake2465[m]
108.6G Aug 1 21:08 data.mdb
-
noobcake2465[m]
```
-
noobcake2465[m]
๐i have the whole monero chain
-
noobcake2465[m]
running a monero node on my own private server
sethforprivacy.com/guides/run-a-monero-node
-
noobcake2465[m]
so i'm not actually using anyone else's node
-
noobcake2465[m]
i was when i sent the 1.75XMR though
-
noobcake2465[m]
but now that i've reseeded my wallet from my own node, i still see the transaction out, but no money come back in
-
noobcake2465[m]
and i would have expected to see something after 3 days
-
noobcake2465[m]
and 2342 confirmations
-
Xair[m]
yeah... I was going to ask about confirmations... but 2342 is definitely more than enough for it to show up
-
tobtoht
noobcake2465[m]: Do you still have the original wallet file (the one you used when you sent the transaction)? Does the expected address show up when you expand the outgoing transaction?
-
noobcake2465[m]
yes i do
-
noobcake2465[m]
yes.
-
noobcake2465[m]
> Does the expected address show up when you expand the outgoing transaction?
-
noobcake2465[m]
yes.
-
noobcake2465[m]
that address being the address of my subwallet
-
noobcake2465[m]
<noobcake2465[m]> "error.png" <- and reseeding the wallet doesn't make the correct amount appear
-
tobtoht
A subaddress or different account?
-
noobcake2465[m]
subaddress, same account
-
tobtoht
There won't be an incoming transaction in that case.
-
noobcake2465[m]
you can see in the transaction details there the address, and the address is #2 same wallet.
-
noobcake2465[m]
then shouldn't the total of that be 3.3XMR not 1.6XMR?
-
tobtoht
It should show one outgoing transaction, with the amount adjusted for net balance adjustment (i.e. the tx fee you paid).
-
noobcake2465[m]
yeah, but the transaction fee was only 0.00000899 XMR
-
tobtoht
I can't view the image you sent, btw.
-
noobcake2465[m]
oh. i can put it up on imgur
-
noobcake2465[m]
-
noobcake2465[m]
my math skills don't suck that much
-
tobtoht
This looks like a bug.
-
noobcake2465[m]
-
noobcake2465[m]
so where did the money go lol
-
noobcake2465[m]
tobtoht: if it is, it looks like a serious one lol
-
tobtoht
Would you mind restoring your wallet using Feather Wallet? (
featherwallet.org ). It can show more details than the GUI can.
-
noobcake2465[m]
sure i guess i can do that.
-
noobcake2465[m]
tobtoht: that their pgp key:
-
noobcake2465[m]
pub rsa4096/0x1F76E155CEFBA71C 2020-12-02 [SC]
-
noobcake2465[m]
Key fingerprint = 8185 E158 A333 30C7 FD61 BC0D 1F76 E155 CEFB A71C
-
tobtoht
yes
-
tobtoht
I'm the dev
-
noobcake2465[m]
just compiling it from source
-
noobcake2465[m]
okay i think it's synchronizing now
-
noobcake2465[m]
oh, it might want to go through Tor
-
noobcake2465[m]
i don't really want it to do that
-
noobcake2465[m]
because the node is on my LAN
-
noobcake2465[m]
oh wait nevermind it's working ๐
-
noobcake2465[m]
300, 320, 400
-
noobcake2465[m]
where it says (D: )
-
tobtoht
Depending on your restore height it may take a while.
-
noobcake2465[m]
i wanted it to sync fast so i downloaded the whole chain ๐
-
noobcake2465[m]
i set it to the restore height that monero told me when i first opened my wallet
-
tobtoht
Ok, that's good.
-
noobcake2465[m]
which happens to be 2212000 so that's a while ago
-
selsta
noobcake2465[m]: It should display "To: My wallet" if you send to yourself
-
selsta
Anyway let's see what Feather shows.
-
noobcake2465[m]
yeah still syncing, shouldn't take long though ๐ from my local node
-
noobcake2465[m]
almost there ๐
-
noobcake2465[m]
okay synchronized
-
noobcake2465[m]
okay so looking at the history
-
noobcake2465[m]
i see the same 5 transactions
-
plowsof[m]
Just double check your tor settings (bottom right corner) - you mentioned your lan node - if you wish to not use tor and continue using feather - you should select the top option ' all traffic except to node "
-
noobcake2465[m]
plowsof[m]: yep that's what it's set to
-
noobcake2465[m]
and as it happens i'm over a vpn anyway
-
selsta
noobcake2465[m]: is the balance correct the same as gui?
-
selsta
is the balance the same as in the gui*
-
noobcake2465[m]
it doesn't look correct, and it looks the same as the monero client
-
noobcake2465[m]
yeah
-
selsta
do you still have to original wallet cache?
-
noobcake2465[m]
-1.75 is twice, and i never got the 1.75 that should have come back to me
-
noobcake2465[m]
yes
-
noobcake2465[m]
it's still in my whonix virtual machine
-
selsta
i.imgur.com/3ve7LjO.png <-- this screenshot has unknown recipient
-
selsta
it would be interesting to look at the original wallet cache to see the recipient
-
noobcake2465[m]
yeah when i click on the โน๏ธ though it shows my subwallet
-
selsta
also tobtoht has some ideas maybe
-
noobcake2465[m]
okay, well i'm happy to work with it to see what i can tell you ๐
-
noobcake2465[m]
i really want to know what happened haha
-
noobcake2465[m]
i'll do a snapshot of the virtual machine
-
selsta
ignore the i button for now, I would look in the original wallet cache
-
noobcake2465[m]
okay.
-
rottenwheel
-
tobtoht
Ah right, apparently โน๏ธ doesn't show the destination, but the address the output was spent from (?)
-
selsta
yes, it doesn't show the destination
-
tobtoht
Might want to clarify that
-
tobtoht
Confused me, lol
-
noobcake2465[m]
i just made a snapshot before i boot the virtual machine
-
tobtoht
Open the wallet on your Whonix machine and look for "destinations" under the weird tx
-
noobcake2465[m]
note for this i'm not usinig a local node in my whonix vm
-
noobcake2465[m]
because i didn't have the storage
-
noobcake2465[m]
i only had 66GB free which i knew wasn't going to be enough
-
tobtoht
That's ok. We just need to know where the GUI thinks the tx was sent to.
-
tobtoht
That information isn't available when restoring from seed.
-
noobcake2465[m]
it's connecting.
-
noobcake2465[m]
right.
-
noobcake2465[m]
so the TX id is the same
-
noobcake2465[m]
oh you mean the "transaction key"
-
noobcake2465[m]
hmm, it has a dash there
-
noobcake2465[m]
and no transaction key
-
noobcake2465[m]
but for the last transaction of 1.75 there is a transaction key
-
noobcake2465[m]
that's bad isn't it
-
noobcake2465[m]
i think the monero client crashed on me when i did that transaction
-
noobcake2465[m]
so maybe it didn't record it โน๏ธ
-
plowsof[m]
Who is it "To" ? (the place where it says 'unknown recipient' on the other wallet.
-
selsta
yes, that's what we want to know
-
noobcake2465[m]
yeah i'm not sure why it says Unknown Recipient
-
tobtoht
"that's bad isn't it" -> yeah
-
tobtoht
if the wallet crashed there's a good chance it didn't get saved
-
noobcake2465[m]
โน๏ธ
-
selsta
it should not say unknown recipient in the original wallet cache
-
selsta
oh, it crashed
-
noobcake2465[m]
so that means it's lost doesn't it
-
tobtoht
(((selsta: this is exactly why I advocate for saving the wallet cache immediately after sending a transaction)))
-
tobtoht
shit like this just isn't supposed to happen
-
selsta
noobcake2465[m]: did you check on the account page, do you have multiple accounts?
-
noobcake2465[m]
nope, one account
-
noobcake2465[m]
i do have multiple addresses under Receive
-
noobcake2465[m]
and the address i sent it to was one of those
-
selsta
I don't think it is possible that a transaction gets lost
-
selsta
tobtoht: will look into it
-
tobtoht
Could it have been possible that you may have pasted a different address?
-
tobtoht
Perhaps the copy operation failed
-
tobtoht
and you had a different address on your clipboard still
-
noobcake2465[m]
i doubt it.
-
noobcake2465[m]
because i copied it from a text file
-
noobcake2465[m]
and i have that text file still
-
selsta
noobcake2465[m]: where did you send the other 1.75?
-
noobcake2465[m]
the second 1.75XMR went to the right place
-
noobcake2465[m]
what happened was i accidentally copied my own wallet address instead of the person i was supposed to
-
noobcake2465[m]
so i sent the first 1.75XMR to myself
-
noobcake2465[m]
when i realized my mistake, i sent another 1.75XMR to the person, and they got that
-
noobcake2465[m]
so the second 1.75XMR is legit and meant to be there
-
selsta
it would say To: My wallet if you send a transaction to yourself
-
plowsof[m]
You sent it twice to the same person?
-
selsta
to me it sounds there was a mix up with the copied addresses, but obviously I can't know what exactly happened
-
noobcake2465[m]
plowsof[m]: no
-
noobcake2465[m]
once to myself, and then once to the right person
-
noobcake2465[m]
i realized what i did, when i looked at the txt file that had a single address in it
-
noobcake2465[m]
because i had copied it into my virtual machine
-
plowsof[m]
Usually , unknown recipient means ' this transaction was initiated by another wallet '
-
tobtoht
The address in the text file matches the one shown in the GUI? echo "address" | sha256sum to make sure
-
noobcake2465[m]
actually i think i know what happened
-
noobcake2465[m]
i reckon instead of copying the one from the text file, i clicked on my own
-
noobcake2465[m]
and it overwrote my clipboard
-
noobcake2465[m]
so that's how i sent it to myself
-
noobcake2465[m]
there's not much risk for failure, because i've literally only ever done two transactions before
-
noobcake2465[m]
because my own address was never in the text file
-
noobcake2465[m]
and the text file was literally a text file with one address in it
-
noobcake2465[m]
so its not like i could have copied any other address in there
-
noobcake2465[m]
this machine has never had any other addresses
-
tobtoht
Can you verify with the recipient that they did not end up receiving both transactions?
-
noobcake2465[m]
yes, and i will ask them
-
tobtoht
By the looks of it you hadn't sent the transaction to the wrong address. Perhaps you went to [I] saw the wrong address listed there, thought you had messed up and sent the transaction again.
-
noobcake2465[m]
i guess we will see, i do trust the person to be honest
-
noobcake2465[m]
tobtoht: oh wait
-
noobcake2465[m]
address under โน๏ธ isn't the To address is it
-
selsta
it's basically the from address
-
tobtoht
^
-
noobcake2465[m]
so why does it show one address there and no address under the main view
-
noobcake2465[m]
where it shows "unknown recipient"
-
noobcake2465[m]
no wait it is supposed to be the same
-
noobcake2465[m]
i just checked the second 1.75XMR and yeah it matches
-
noobcake2465[m]
tobtoht: selsta although if i copied the wrong address in there, it shouldn't matter
-
noobcake2465[m]
when re-seeding the wallet, wouldn't it show the correct one?
-
selsta
I can't follow.
-
selsta
Copy the wrong address where?
-
noobcake2465[m]
well if i sent it to the wrong address say, and the monero client crashed recording the wrong thing in there like you said
-
noobcake2465[m]
assuming i had the wrong address in my clipboard
-
noobcake2465[m]
if created a new wallet from seed, wouldn't that show the correct one?
-
tobtoht
"wouldn't it show the correct one?" -> No, destination addresses can't be recovered using the seed.
-
noobcake2465[m]
right.
-
selsta
Did you rescan the wallet?
-
noobcake2465[m]
yes
-
selsta
Can you look into the wallet file folder if you have an original wallet cache?
-
noobcake2465[m]
sure
-
selsta
wallet.old_cache
-
selsta
something like that with wallet being your wallet file name
-
selsta
that is inside the VM
-
noobcake2465[m]
it's only showing "name" and "name.keys"
-
selsta
ok
-
noobcake2465[m]
yep
-
noobcake2465[m]
no _cache files
-
noobcake2465[m]
you know what is interesting, monero-gui seems to be making a heap of large log files
-
noobcake2465[m]
oh wait nevermind that's cos i turned up the log level
-
noobcake2465[m]
i forgot that
-
selsta
if you want you can send a small amount to yourself
-
selsta
then you will see how it looks in the wallet if you send to yourself
-
noobcake2465[m]
this has really stumped me though
-
noobcake2465[m]
and i was pretty sure the first time i actually sent that transaction i double checked it
-
noobcake2465[m]
i was kinda surprised to see my own address under โน๏ธ
-
selsta
you will always see your own address under i
-
noobcake2465[m]
oh yeah you're right
-
noobcake2465[m]
well that means the only person i could have sent it to is person A or person B
-
noobcake2465[m]
because i've never sent any money anywhere else lol
-
noobcake2465[m]
so there was nothing for me to mistakenly copy into the virtual machine except my own address
-
noobcake2465[m]
clipboard from host/guest is disabled
-
noobcake2465[m]
even if i had mashed some keys
-
noobcake2465[m]
its unlikely that would have been a valid address and it would not have worked at all
-
tobtoht
fwiw, I think we can improve the UX by clearly stating that it is the "From" address shown under i.
-
tobtoht
It's most likely that you sent both transactions to their address.
-
noobcake2465[m]
yeah possibly
-
noobcake2465[m]
i trust the person to tell me
-
noobcake2465[m]
i actually know them IRL so
-
noobcake2465[m]
and i've known them for years ๐
-
noobcake2465[m]
haha i like the cut fox in about
-
noobcake2465[m]
*cute
-
noobcake2465[m]
i actually think i like feather more than the official client
-
noobcake2465[m]
i kinda like qt/gtk apps they tend to be less chunky and annoying
-
noobcake2465[m]
and fit in with the rest of my system theme
-
tobtoht
I just realized: Foxes don't have Feathers. Not sure how we overlooked that lol.
-
noobcake2465[m]
yeah i kinda expected to see like an ugly bird in there
-
noobcake2465[m]
maybe its because foxes are floofy
-
noobcake2465[m]
like a feather
-
tobtoht
brb renaming the project to floofywallet
-
tobtoht
I think we had a bird at some point
-
tobtoht
but it must've flown off
-
noobcake2465[m]
got eaten by the fox!
-
tobtoht
:o
-
noobcake2465[m]
foxes are very crafty
-
tobtoht
ok I need to get rehrar to edit the fox with a feather sticking out of it's mouth
-
noobcake2465[m]
especially the kind that like chickens

Just nudged proxysto.re about the possibility of offering Threema codes for XMR. Let's see if they get back to me.

Guess it is not happening any time soon, unfortunately.
-
rottenwheel
Hi thanks for the suggestion, we have also thought about it and contacted Threema. However, they do not want resellers and resale of the vouchers. So unfortunately it is not possible for us at the moment. I would have really liked to take Threema myself.
