As a follow-up to yesterday's discussion about Monero and stable coins I checked what the people over at Haven Protocol are doing (Haven is a codefork of Monero)
-
rbrunner
They have xUSD what I think can be called an algorithmic stablecoin
-
rbrunner
It aims to implement a peg of 1:1 with USD
-
rbrunner
It seems it could hold that peg more or less until last month, now it stands at half the price it should:
coinmarketcap.com/currencies/xusd
-
rbrunner
(If you zoom the graph out to 1 full year you can see how that played out.)
-
rbrunner
I wonder a bit how that de-peg happened because the price of XHV / Haven itself does not show anything too drastic happening in June
-
aremor[m]
rbrunner: Is it simply that stablecoins don’t work?
-
rbrunner
You said that, not me :)
-
aremor[m]
XHV has different principles from xUSD. Two different tokens. Just same chain.
-
rbrunner
But yeah, I think if you are as small as Haven, with a current market cap of only USD 14 million for XHV, maybe that really does not work
-
sech1
They halted xUSD in May, I think
-
rbrunner
Yes, I think the "trick" should be that XHV is "adjusted" somehow by an algorithm to keep xUSD stable.
-
rbrunner
You mean they switched off that algorithm, e.g. to protect XHV?
-
sech1
Yes, you can't exchange XHV to xUSD and vice versa now
-
rbrunner
Splendid. That was basically the whole value proposition, no?
-
sech1
IIRC they did it after Terra collapse
-
rbrunner
Strange I did not hear about that. I follow Monero forks quite closely. Maybe it is so small not enough people cared.
-
aremor[m]
sech1: I saw that and thought it was only the exchange mechanism they had
-
rbrunner
-
aremor[m]
“Conversions”, right
-
rbrunner
-
rbrunner
"It was necessary to make this change without community consultation to prevent panic conversions from compounding the issue."
-
rbrunner
A, only the danger of some panic on the horizon, and the stablecoin basically shuts down already?
-
rbrunner
And I thought a stablecoin's purpose is protecting me against rough times ... silly me.
-
rbrunner
Sigh. I am too old for this shit, really.
-
aremor[m]
Damn, I actually had some of that for a slight second on tradeogre
-
aremor[m]
But I don’t hold crap like that. Never.
-
rbrunner
Stable crap, not crap :)
-
rbrunner
I can't let go, I have to ramble on a little more still: From their blog post giving details
havenprotocol.org/2022/06/13/conversions-paused
-
rbrunner
"In addition, the economics working group had already been discussing the potential for on-chain mechanisms that would automatically pause conversions."
-
rbrunner
" This would be built into the protocol and be triggered if pre-determined asset ratios in the network were reached."
-
rbrunner
Isn't this basically declaring defeat?
-
ct[m]
I don't think so. In the past the most pressing issue with halting any blockchain or conversions was, that it was initiated by humans, so there is no guarantee that it won't be halted for other reasons (ie. politics)
-
ct[m]
Embedding the decision to pause execution in the code prevents that kind of manipulation.
-
ct[m]
In general adding a failsafe to experimental code is a good idea. I'd prefer this over arrogant devs who think they get it perfect on first try
-
garth
Maybe someday they'll figure out a trustless stablecoin but we are certainly not there yet. I am dubious if we'll ever get there since it seems crypto sucks at being attached to real world things. "Land deeds on the blockchain! Fine art on the blockchain!"
-
garth
It seems to me that cryptocurrencies work best when they remain inside of a digital space. So what sort of stablecoin would exist that is disattached from the USD? Because it seems that making a stablecoin worth, lets say, $1, requires that real world attachment, which then requires arbitration, which then kills decentralization, which is cryptos entire raison d'etre.

<garth> "It seems to me that cryptocurren..." <- I really don't get the idea of stablecoins. If the goal of these cryptos are to be always worth 1$ then the total supply inflates at the exact same rate as the $ does. Just controlled by a different entity (so it's even more useless than the $). In that case just wait for the CBDC or use online banking I guess?
-
MrWonderland[m]
The only way a 'stablecoin' could maybe work, if you bind it to silver or gold e.g. 1 SCoin equals 1g of gold. But then you still have the problem of the need to trust that entity that hands out this coins.

-
jwinterm[m]
Exactly, USDT is just dollars controlled by another centralized entity, but it obviously fills a need for many users since USDT dominates total trading volume
-
jwinterm[m]
You might not "get it"
-
jwinterm[m]
But clearly many many people do
-
MrWonderland[m]
I'm really curious what exactly is the use for it then? I mean I can see, that it gets used a lot, but I don't understand why (because in my eyes it doesn't really makes sense as I explained my view earlier)
-
monerobull[m]
Stuff like usdt is mainly used for trading
-
zoom0ut
what a stable coin provides that usd does not is quick transfers and different gatekeepers
-
MrWonderland[m]
So you don't have to give someone your bank account number? And no three day waiting for the transaction to finish?
-
monerobull[m]
Not really
-
monerobull[m]
Like crypto-trading
-
monerobull[m]
Gambling on price
-
monerobull[m]
I have 10 Bitcoin, Bitcoin goes up, i sell for tether, wait till Bitcoin goes down and buy back more
-

Tether can be put into liquidity pools and therefore traded on decentralized exchanges

-
monerobull[m]
It makes sense if you trade cryptos regularly, yes
-
monerobull[m]
It's not trying to replace cash or anything, eventhough in some places with a weak local currency, people save up in tether
-
monerobull[m]
Obviously very risky in case it depegs and you lose everything
-
monerobull[m]
But even here in Europe, had i bought tether with my money instead of letting it sit around in Euros, I'd be up 20%
-
zoom0ut

ya, at this point there are so many options for stables, including gold and eur etc., that it is probably a negative since it hurts liquidity

Morpheus: Let me know if you find a reliable way to get historical data that does not come from the chain.
-
Rucknium[m]
Some pools, including minexmr, put an indicator in the tx_extra of the coinbase transaction, but not all.
-
Rucknium[m]
And all the websites that I checked do not have historical data.
-
Rucknium[m]
I was working on statistical project to estimate the effect of minexmr's April 1st increased pool fee (1% to 1.1%) on their share of mined blocks, so I extracted the data from tx_extra. The project seems less of a priority now 🙂

yeah thats why i was looking for another
-
Morpheus[m]
OK, no problem
-
Morpheus[m]
I was delaying getting the data from miningpoolstats website, but as far as I know, we'll have historical data only after I start monitoring this
-
Morpheus[m]
I could get data from Internet Archive in case there's no other way
-
ofrnxmr[m]
I think thats ok for now. Miningpoolstat only shows a few pages of history, but perhaps the operators have logs going much further back?
-
ofrnxmr[m]
Or internet archive :P
-
ofrnxmr[m]
It would be cool if we could also monitor reorgs (the original miner vs new miner)

ofrnxmr[m]

Morpheus[m]
-

ofrnxmr[m]
Monerojnet5jhsiqidvwjqifbwu.onion etc?
-
Morpheus[m]
Yes, sure. I didnt know how to have one of those
-
Rucknium[m]
There is a way to put the onion URL into the webpage header so that it's easy for people with the Tor Browser to click on it when they visit the clearnet website
-
ofrnxmr[m]
Doesn't work on mobile yet though Rucknium:
-
Morpheus[m]

The tool is here:

yeah its a shame too because tari was potentially a good platform for doing tokens/stock/nft stuff
