Main drawbacks are that they don't have a pre-pay wallet (every service payment involves an XMR tx) and they send you an email every time you pay in XMR, with no way to turn it off I think.

The spammer can drive up fees, yes. High fees were not the problem.

The problem was that the spammer would be able to generate a massive number of outputs that would be used as decoys in other people's transactions. That would mean the spammer could rule those decoys out, reducing the effective ring size of those transactions and _potentially_ allowing the spammer to deanonymize random users.

Monero is all about privacy. High fees are certainly a problem, but they're totally justified when they are necessary to protect user privacy.

Fees are part of the problem.

If the cost of an attack is negligible, an attack is inevitable

Buying groceries would only be 5$ if an attacker is willing to pay miners an extra $5/tx (and climbing) to continue to attack
