2. A self hosted repo proves nothing and has nothing to do with open source. You can put whatever apk you want in there. So not a win in any sense. Just a convenience for non Google play users

Your #2 implies this, but self hosted repos arent about Foss. They are about convenience.

In our case, at present, we absolutely have plans to get into F-Droid proper. For now though because we iterate quite quickly, doing a PR every time would add a lot of unnecessary overhead per release.
