fr33_yourself[m]
Don't you think a determined adversary could spend meaningless tx's on Monero's chain causing some irrevocable chain size expansion? I'm not complaining. I don't want a fee model like Bitcoin and I know you guys + Articmine have been following the Zcash situation closely. Plus anyone who attempts to rapid fire spend tx's on Monero is just burning money. Plus 10 block lock helps deter this to some extent too which is nice
-
fr33_yourself[m]
<nioc> "there is some entity that uses..." <- any idea as to who this may be?

maybe the same person who is using a custom monero wallet that does not use decoys > 1 year old / constructs ~100kb transactions / does not use coinbase tx's (as reported by sech1 in the recent MRL meeting

<fr33_yourself[m]> Don't you think a determined adversary could spend meaningless tx's on Monero's chain causing some irrevocable chain size expansion? I'm not complaining ... <--- On a privacy protecting network this ultimately comes down to pricing out spam while keeping the cost of ham low
-
fr33_yourself[m]
ArticMine: I gotcha. Once again I'm not complaining at all. From my understanding our security against this sort of attack falls somewhere between bitcoin and zcash.
-
ArticMine
Monero already doing a good job here, this being said in my view there is still room to make the cost of spam even more expensive while keeping the cost of ham low
-
ArticMine
It is actually better than Bitcoin
-
fr33_yourself[m]
How so?
-
ArticMine
our un - priced block size of 300000 bytes per 2 min is less than Bitcoin 2 MB over 10 min and our tx size is ~6x
-
fr33_yourself[m]
Also ArticMine you are the scalability guy, so what do you think about Monero's blockchain 10 to 20 years from now? Do you think chain size and bandwidth will problems? Right now things work well because Monero is kind of a niche privacy / libertarian chain, but I was trying to think through how things will look quite a ways into the future
-
ArticMine
Also Bitcoin to my knowledge still does not have a min node relay fee
-
fr33_yourself[m]
ArticMine: I think I see what you are saying
-
ArticMine
In 10 - 20 years I am not concerned because of compounding effect of Nielsen's Law of Internet Bandwidth

ArticMine
What does concern me is how to manage a major disruption on a large card network such as VISA
-
ArticMine
We have to allow for growth but only to a point

ArticMine
This is what I am working on apart from in creasing the cost of spam

What really fascinates me about the scaling debate in Bitcoin is how far the goalposts move while the debate just continues on as if nothing has happened
-
ArticMine
The debate started in 2010 12 years ago. So it is now 1.5^12 in bandwidth
-
fr33_yourself[m]
What do you mean by that exactly?
-
fr33_yourself[m]
My primary concern is chain size more so than bandwidth.
-
fr33_yourself[m]
I'm a hardcore anarchist, so I was trying to imagine if Monero would work on a large scale as a currency
-
ArticMine
1 MB in 2010 when it was introduced in Bitcoin is like 130 MB today,
-
fr33_yourself[m]
in storage or bandwidth or both?
-
ArticMine
... and Bitcoin Cash is a "big blocker" coin with its 32 MB limit
-
ArticMine
The big issue is bandwidth. Storage on can throw money at it
-
ArticMine
Increase the adoption of Monero by say 1000x What do you thinlk will happen to price?
-
ArticMine
think
-
ArticMine
Any node operator that has a market exposure to Monero today will not have a problem. That is may take
-
fr33_yourself[m]
<ArticMine> "1 MB in 2010 when it was..." <- What do you think a positive next 20 years for Monero would look like in terms of adoption, chain size, number of daily transactions, hardware improvements and resistance to government shut down? Also what do you think is the biggest threat to Monero? A guy earlier said he thinks splinternet is the biggest risk.
-
fr33_yourself[m]
I guess you answered the above already sorry my internet was lagging
-
fr33_yourself[m]
<ArticMine> "Increase the adoption of..." <- This is a good point. I guess we will get to find out. What is the largest threat to Monero in your opinion?
-
ArticMine
Bandwidth is another matter entirely. To find the worst Internet here is the greater Vancouver area I actually picked the most expensive house for sale in one of the most expensive neighborhoods
-
fr33_yourself[m]
ArticMine: lol
-
ArticMine
<fr33_yourself[m]> ... What is the largest threat to Monero in your opinion? <--- It depends where. Fragmenting the Internet is an issue already in some countries. Blockchain Surveillance (BS) is slowing down adoption. I see BS as a short term rather than long term threat because it does not work. It wont stop Monero but it is slowing it down now
-
ArticMine
BS does not work in BTC and even less in ETH
-
fr33_yourself[m]
How is blockchain surveillance slowing down adoption of Monero?
-
fr33_yourself[m]
and yeah it seems like a splinternet outcome would be a worst case scenario
-
ArticMine
By frustrating fiat on / off ramps to Monero
-
fr33_yourself[m]
Ah yes perhaps
-
fr33_yourself[m]
I think that is long term healthy though
-
ArticMine
The success of Monero will put the BS companies out of business so the lobby governments to keep Monero out of exchanges. I agree that this is not a long term threat
-
ArticMine
they
-
fr33_yourself[m]
Yep it will be interesting to see how it all plays out. Do you also like precious metals? Do you think that by holding an equivalent amount of Monero and gold or silver you are hedged to some extent by the weaknesses of the other?
-
ArticMine
There is also the real risk of FUD from the Bitcoin community (in all of its variants ) on scaling. This can induce the self crippling of Monero from within
-
fr33_yourself[m]
That has been the most worrying part for me. Not because the Bitcoiners said it, but I asked myself how much the blockchain would grow if each living person did one Monero tx per year ( just a hypotethical world), the blockchain would grow by 14 TB that year
-
fr33_yourself[m]
I don't think Monero people will cripple and hang up the hat though. Most people here hate bitcoin lol
-
ArticMine
<fr33_yourself[m]> ... the blockchain would grow by 14 TB that year. Yes but what would be XMR / USD with that kind of adoption? My take is that buying the requisite number of SSDs and setting up RAID arrays would not be an issue for most nodes. They would have to stay away from a few neighborhoods to get decent Internet
-
fr33_yourself[m]
ArticMine: Is a RAID array like a series of connected HDDs? Is it possible / relatively easy to store Monero's blockchain on two seperate drives? like half on one drive and half on another?
-
ArticMine
I built one for Bitcoin 12 TB usable RAID 6 using 6 3TB HDDs for Bitcoin just under 10 years ago. Even bought the raind contrller from Roger Vers Bitcoin store in early 2013
-
ArticMine
RAID controller
-
ArticMine
It is a lot easier to do this today witn SSDs, For starters they weight less
-
fr33_yourself[m]
Dang you were prepping hard for your node haha
-
fr33_yourself[m]
I wouldn't think Bitcoin would ever need that given the blocksize cap, but perhaps you set all that up prior to the blocksize cap
-
ArticMine
It was crippled
-
fr33_yourself[m]
ArticMine: So even if you have 2 x 2 TB SSD's and Monero's chain grows to 3 TB, then it's possible to connect the drives so that the node functions smoothly even though the chain is split between the drives?
-
ArticMine
With SSDs I could use 12 x 8 TB today in the same case
-
ArticMine
Would need a new RAID controller and motherboard / CPU
-
fr33_yourself[m]
Right now there are about 11,200 Monero nodes worldwide. How many of these operators do you think are sufficiently tech savvy to also do what you are doing?
-
fr33_yourself[m]
Or to set up an array as you have described
-
ArticMine
On can buy an off the shelf RAID array for a price
-
ArticMine
There are even in a PCIe 16 card form factor
-
fr33_yourself[m]
Gotcha, so price isn't a big issue, but what about being tech savvy
-
ArticMine
-
ArticMine
64TB
-
DanIsnotthemanBr
cheap
-
fr33_yourself[m]
<ArticMine> "
eshop.macsales.com/item..." <- This is the drive itself or simply the array that you put the drives in? Does this piece of equipment come with 64TB or need drives to plug into it?
-
fr33_yourself[m]
If that's 64TB SSD right there in that one piece of equipment that is impressive. I'm surprised you were able to find this thing for that price. I saw some that were much more expensive on other sites
-
ArticMine
Yes it is. Uses a video card form factor
-
fr33_yourself[m]
Dang that's impressive.
-
fr33_yourself[m]
I'll save that link in case the day comes where I need it haha
-
ArticMine
My nerdy idea of using 12 x 8 TB SSDs RAID will produce about 100 TB for the same price
-
ArticMine
fr33_yourself[m]> I'll save that link in case the day comes where I need it haha <--- I am not, since the goalposts keep moving
-
fr33_yourself[m]
I don't think I have the tech nohow to do produce a RAID array though haha... I'm glad that you guys who are sculpting Monero are so intelligent though.
-
fr33_yourself[m]
ArticMine: You mean that you think even better drives will come onto the market for cheaper in the next 5 years?
-
ArticMine
I would be very surprised if something better was not available in 1 year
-
fr33_yourself[m]
I hope seo
-
ArticMine
I still have the 286 a friend of mine gave me over 20 years ago. It has a 10 MB HDD. Those drives when they came out were ~3600 USD in the USD of ~1984 Just do the math on the inflation of the USD since then
-
fr33_yourself[m]
Yeah that is crazy tech deflation and increase in efficiency right there
-
ArticMine
This is why I am so concerned regarding hard limits such as in BTC / BCH and yes even BSV
