The monero.com website still doesn't have an obvious disclaimer that it's squatting. Just the bottom the page stuff not many will notice. An oversight, I assume.
-
ErCiccione
It has been pointed out to them multiple times and they said they are going to change it. Let's wait and see i would say
-
moneromooo
I waited, and I saw...
-
ErCiccione
yeah, but they know people are against listing them if there is the chance of confusing them for the official website, so it's in their interest to fix that. If they don't fix, i'd say the situation will be clear to everyone
-
ErCiccione
ah but wait, the disclaimer you are talking about wasn't there before afaict. So i guess that's their way to make it clear. That's quite ridiculus. I hope that's just the preview of biggest changes to come
-
ErCiccione
otherwise it's quite hard to not see it as an attempt to mislead people
-
moneromooo
What, the "official site: getmonero.org" at the bottom ? It was there IIRC.
-
moneromooo
It's pretty damn clearly that.
-
ErCiccione
i might have missed it
-
moneromooo
It's the "but it's there in the fine print in a locked cabinet in a disused lavatory in the basement..." thing again :D
-
ErCiccione
😛 Waiting for "our terms of service say it clearly". We already got "it's in the faq"
-
moneromooo
I don't see a question about it in the faq though.
-
moneromooo
I can't imagine they'd to it. "Are you squatting htis site ?" "Why, yes we are".
-
moneromooo
Ah, it is in "Who is behind monero".
-
ErCiccione
yeah i guess that's what they referred to.

-

No one owns the Monero brand, not even whoever runs getmonero.org
-
selsta
but they want to get added to getmonero.org, so people will give feedback
-
moneromooo
They have the right, and I have the right to bitch about their dishonesty.
-
ofrnxmr[m]
Right. They can pretend to be an official wallet and dox all of their users NP.
-
moneromooo
But can you imagine if some large (non-MS) software vendor registered windows.com to push their windows related wares ? They'd be sued in an instant.
-
ofrnxmr[m]
Im sure monero community agrees with that
-
moneromooo
And they pretend hte'yre not sqiuatting, the little shits.

-
gonbatfire[m]
moneromooo: Microsoft owns Windows, who owns Monero?
-
moneromooo
I don't think anyone does, but that's not the point.
-
moneromooo
You can be a little shit even if what you squat isn't owned.
-
moneromooo
Honesty isn't about what is legal, but what is... I dunno, ethical ?
-
moneromooo
Honest. I guess.
-
gonbatfire[m]
Squatting would be to pretend to own something you don't, by definition they can't be squatting
-
moneromooo
What bullshut.
-
selsta
the only way to find out this isn't the offical monero website is by clicking through the faq, or the tiny text on the bottom of the website
-
moneromooo
The'yre pretending to be monero. They're not.
-
gonbatfire[m]
getmonero.org isn't monero either, who decides that?
-
moneromooo
They're trying to pull the wool over the eyes of the people who end up there. Whether someone owns monero is irrelevant.
-
moneromooo
Cunt...
-
ofrnxmr[m]
You may do so in any reasonable manner, but not in any way that suggests The Monero Project endorses you or your use.
-
gonbatfire[m]
You can call them dishonest if you want
-
gonbatfire[m]
but it's not squatting
-
moneromooo
Trying to play lawyer over honesty... Jesus...

Fuck you too, cunt.

For trying word games to hide dishonesty.
-

Squatting against a centralized entity? No
-

But doing dishonest, foe profit business in the name of others work? Yes
-
gonbatfire[m]
ofrnxmr[m]: lol that's referring to the content in their website, not the Monero source code or something
-
moneromooo
Man, this shit really pisses me off.
-
gonbatfire[m]
lmao
-
gonbatfire[m]
crying (insulting) because they can't enforce what they want in a decentralized project
-
moneromooo
YEARS of my life I worked for this. And these cunts are trying to pass themselves off as this. FUCK YOU CAKE.
-
gonbatfire[m]
I guess enjoy what little power you think you have by deciding what goes into getmonero.org
-
gonbatfire[m]
moneromoo is not Monero, Fluffy is not Monero, thankful_for_today is not Monero, sorry to break it to you
-
ofrnxmr[m]

You are a non profit, decentealized anon dev environment, and some COMPANY uses "your" name and wants you to recommend them while they break the privacy of the protocol you built. All the while users mistake them for the real thing

Vik gave the thumbs up to my suggestion of changing the text "Recommended wallet app" to "Recommended by CakeLabs", I think that's a move in the right direction
-
gonbatfire[m]
My backlash is mainly against the idea of CakeLab giving the domain to whoever runs getmonero.org
-
gonbatfire[m]
* idea of demanding CakeLab giving
-
ofrnxmr[m]
I dont think cake should have to hand the domain over, but should remove it from corporate ownership
-
ofrnxmr[m]
Not "should" but would be tjeost honest thing
-
gonbatfire[m]
* My backlash is mainly against the idea of demanding CakeLab to give the domain to whoever runs getmonero.org
-
ofrnxmr[m]
A website is centralized regardless.
-
ofrnxmr[m]
The issue with the website isnt, to me, that they own it. But ideally, id say it should redirect to getmonero.org or show a link on homepage to "looking for the official site? Getmonero.org" or something
-
ofrnxmr[m]
I say official because getmonero is not a for profit where who knows how huge the backer is. Monero.com was something to the tune of 400k.
-
ofrnxmr[m]
We only have 90k for hackerone bounties
-
nioc
to me it is simple
-
nioc
it is obvious that monero dot com can easily be mistaken for being the official website
-
nioc
coingecko made this mistake
-
nioc
it should be obvious that there should be info on the site that makes this fact.....obvious
-
nioc
in a way that is obvious when people land on the site
-
afungible[m]
There is a conflict of interest.
-
afungible[m]
And I believe it would be right on part of Cake/monerocom to do the right thing to address relevant concerns cited above, "point by point". It is for their own good scaling forward and for the good of this ecosystem to keep things intact (lest we want such concerns break the community apart & create animosity, which can hurt them & people who built Monero for what it is today - even if it sounds too exaggerated, its likely).
-
afungible[m]
I do not know whats a good compromise, but whatever it is, they should help set the wheels in motion in the most honest way possible.
-
ofrnxmr[m]
On subject of coingecko, I also reject their questionable "in your face", priority listing lol.
-
ofrnxmr[m]
-
-
ofrnxmr[m]
Steps to trolling:
-
ofrnxmr[m]
1. List monero.com as the official website
-
ofrnxmr[m]
2. Open a pr after you've been contacted about it, asking for priority placement
-
ofrnxmr[m]
I wonder if they opened a pr on monero.com GitHub asking for special treatment there as well /s
-
selsta
my main concern is also currently that monero.com can be confused for the official website and adding a tiny link at the bottom of the website won't solve this
-
afungible[m]
<selsta> "my main concern is also currentl..." <- Absolutely agree, without any reservations. This is a no brainier. And I feel they can do much better.
-
afungible[m]
If having getmonero accept them as endorsed wallet, its on their part irrespective, to clearly indicate getmonero is the "core" website. I don't know how they would do it without them having some consequences, but looks imperative.
-
plowsof
not sure if posted here (but it is an hour old) - moneromoo's pr to remove cake wallet entirely from getmonero
monero-project/monero-site #2013
-

ok mooo summed it well up
