<syntheticbird:monero.social> > Exciting news for the Monero community! The shift to Astro is a smart move. As someone who's worked on similar transitions, I can say it'll likely improve performance and maintainability. The static site approach is perfect for privacy-focused projects like Monero.

<syntheticbird:monero.social> > Have you considered integrating automated testing into the new build process? It could help catch issues early, especially during the transition. At Fission AI Lab, we've found this crucial for smooth launches.

<monerobull:monero.social> webp > jpeg

m-relay
<321bob321:monero.social> Brave user spotted
-
m-relay
<321bob321:monero.social> Thanks mbll
-
m-relay
<monerobull:monero.social> no, i grew to like webp during the mordinals phase
-
m-relay
<321bob321:monero.social> Ahh morbs
-
m-relay
<monerobull:monero.social> where a 100kb webp would look phenomenal compared to a jpg
-
m-relay
<monerobull:monero.social> it really showed me just how much better webp is
-
m-relay
<monerobull:monero.social> thats why monero.town converts everything to webp as well
-
m-relay
<syntheticbird:monero.social> please. JPEG-XL is so much superior to jpeg
-
m-relay
<syntheticbird:monero.social> your poor and pitiful webP format is archaic and uncompressed
-
m-relay
<syntheticbird:monero.social> my JXL images sometimes don't cross the 2kB limit
-
m-relay
<monerobull:monero.social> hm
-
m-relay
<monerobull:monero.social> but nobody supports it
-
m-relay
<monerobull:monero.social> even less than webp

m-relay
<syntheticbird:monero.social> you know what they say: humanity is always slow on progress
-
m-relay
-
m-relay
<syntheticbird:monero.social> I mean look at that
-
m-relay
<syntheticbird:monero.social> 218 bytes only
-
m-relay
<rottenwheel:kernal.eu> Who the fuck has ever seen a `.jxl` in their lives? No one, just you and your two imaginary friends. 😂
-
m-relay
<basses:matrix.org>
caniuse.com/jpegxl
-
m-relay
<basses:matrix.org> also what image viewer support it?
-
m-relay
<syntheticbird:monero.social> I don't blame you ignorant. Jxl should grow upon everyone's land
-
m-relay
<syntheticbird:monero.social> loupe, qview, windows, mac
-
m-relay
<321bob321:monero.social> Works on opera browser
-
m-relay
<syntheticbird:monero.social> really? thats cool
-
m-relay
<syntheticbird:monero.social> JPEG-XL would have already conquer the web if Google wasn't on a zealotry battle for muh AVIF format and mug AV1 video codec.
-
m-relay
-
m-relay
<basses:matrix.org> cap
-
m-relay
<basses:matrix.org> .
-
m-relay
<siren:kernal.eu> Use WebP/WebM, realistically the most optimal and best choice currently
-
m-relay
<syntheticbird:monero.social> Give me one thing WebP/WebM have more than AVIF/AV1
-
m-relay
<ofrnxmr:monero.social> Size

-
m-relay
<syntheticbird:monero.social> webX is more heavy indeed.
-
m-relay
<siren:kernal.eu> Sure I'll do the googling instead of you. The answer is support.
-
m-relay
<siren:kernal.eu>
caniuse.com/webp
-
m-relay
<siren:kernal.eu>
caniuse.com/avif
-
m-relay
<siren:kernal.eu> I get aids when someone sends avif or heic and shit won't open on Linux or Android. To hell with those.
-
m-relay
<syntheticbird:monero.social> oh no we don't support muh KaiOS browser and Opera mini. It's so over.
-
m-relay
<syntheticbird:monero.social> I don't know what you use but I've never had any issues with avif on windows or linux
-
m-relay
-
m-relay
<siren:kernal.eu> Not even element or most matrix clients support it
-
m-relay
<hardenedsteel:monero.social> we use AVIF atm
-
m-relay
<syntheticbird:monero.social> blame Element, they are the one that that enforced authenticated media and it has been bug over bug over bug. Avif thumbnailing is there issue for real
-
m-relay
<syntheticbird:monero.social> AV1 works fine for example
-
m-relay
<siren:kernal.eu> Yeah I don't think you should be too weird with the formats to save few bytes really
-
m-relay
<siren:kernal.eu> All of these additions are fairly recent.
-
m-relay
<syntheticbird:monero.social> i agree. I only see it making sense for future content
-
m-relay
<siren:kernal.eu> I assume Debian users won't even have those versions lol
-
m-relay
<syntheticbird:monero.social> valid point.
-
m-relay
<syntheticbird:monero.social> unfortunately I hate debian
-
m-relay
<hardenedsteel:monero.social> jpegXL has progressive decoding, this may be useful
-
m-relay
<siren:kernal.eu> > <@siren:kernal.eu> All of these additions are fairly recent.
-
m-relay
<siren:kernal.eu> I assume Debian users don't even have those versions lol
-
m-relay
<syntheticbird:monero.social> yes this is really the first thing that shocked me
-
m-relay
<syntheticbird:monero.social> I didn't know AVIF didn't had progressive decoding
-
m-relay
<syntheticbird:monero.social> In every aspect JPEG-XL is better than AVIF
-
m-relay
<syntheticbird:monero.social> a little like Cuprate over monerod

<syntheticbird:monero.social> I heard they wanted compression and decompression acceleration on GPUs for games
-
m-relay
<basses:matrix.org> no one does optimization because hardware becomes faster and more storage
-
m-relay
<syntheticbird:monero.social> thats offtopic sry
-
m-relay
<rottenwheel:kernal.eu> Great, we didn't have enough with the rust shills, now we'll also have jpeg XL shills!
-
m-relay
<rottenwheel:kernal.eu> At least the go shills are quiet...
-

So, monero means coin, c o i n n i o c

<syntheticbird:monero.social> the easter egg just leaked
-
m-relay
<sgp_:monero.social> re caniuse.com:
-
m-relay
<sgp_:monero.social> jpeg-xl: 13.23%
-
m-relay
<sgp_:monero.social> avif: 92.94%
-
m-relay
<sgp_:monero.social> webp: 95.69%
-
m-relay
<sgp_:monero.social> pick webp or avif for now, consider jpeg-xl once all modern support (only Safari does atm)
-
plowsof
our internet explorer users are unable to view avifs. i understand the severity, but this is a sacrifice i am willing to make
-
m-relay
<basses:matrix.org> doubt monero software will run for internet explorer users
-
m-relay
<sgp_:monero.social> progressive loading is much less relevant when you can compress a file to kilobytes.

-
m-relay
-
m-relay
<basses:matrix.org> great overall feedback from comments tho!
-
m-relay
<sgp_:monero.social> fwiw I'm not against jpeg-xl, it's just that it's a non-starter since it's not supported. So given that, what to use. avif gets really, really tiny, especially with more cpu thrown at the compression, and works with everything now. An HD image is only ~400 KB
-
m-relay
<basses:matrix.org> Everyone will also like the new re-design, although some will miss old design for nostalgia reasons.
-
m-relay
<ofrnxmr:xmr.mx> We've started using avif already
-
m-relay
<basses:matrix.org> I'm agains't using jpeg-xl for websites, because it not supported at all by all browsers except safari
-
m-relay
<sgp_:monero.social> right, which is why it's currently a non-starter
-
m-relay
<basses:matrix.org> There's no problem about have technicial discussion about image compression fromats, but in reality, no one should be shipping it to their websites at least for the time being
-
m-relay
<basses:matrix.org> btw, you should have shared the actual full design page instead of the intro page.
-
m-relay
-
m-relay
<basses:matrix.org> Not everyone is familiar with Figma
-
m-relay
<basses:matrix.org> Diego Salazar Sorry for the ping, but the text at redesign in figma is just a placeholder and will be subject to changes, right?
-
m-relay
-
m-relay
<basses:matrix.org> doesn't sound right at all
-
m-relay
<syntheticbird:monero.social> I was just shilling jpeg xl. It was never close being discussed for support. I blame google for doing some lobby with AOMedia
-
m-relay
<basses:matrix.org> "Monero ensures privacy by providing full anonymity and
-
m-relay
<basses:matrix.org> untraceable transactions for users." Is a lot better.
-
m-relay
<basses:matrix.org> "respects privacy" phrase implies a service, which monero isn't
-
m-relay
<diego:cypherstack.com> yes of course
-
m-relay
-
m-relay
<basses:matrix.org> nope, spooky

m-relay
<syntheticbird:monero.social> I blame Zcash
-
m-relay
-
m-relay
<syntheticbird:monero.social> ig i have a new svg icon website in my bookmarks thx
-
m-relay
<syntheticbird:monero.social> is this the one Diego Salazar used ?
-
m-relay
<basses:matrix.org> yes, the pics I sent
-
m-relay
<ofrnxmr:xmr.mx> But it doesnt provide full anonymity 🫡
-
m-relay
<basses:matrix.org> we can switch image with opposite color based on theme chosen (as these will be invisible in dark theme)
-
m-relay
<basses:matrix.org> Reminder: we can't use svg 😢 so interchange between pngs based on themese
-
m-relay
<ofrnxmr:xmr.mx> For wallet users, anonymity is up to them - for the tx graph, ip protections from nodes
-
m-relay
<basses:matrix.org> redesign before FCMP++?
-
m-relay
<ofrnxmr:xmr.mx> And for node runners, its clearnet bt default and provides 0 anonymity if you want duplex connections
-
m-relay
<ofrnxmr:xmr.mx> Before RCMP mainnet? Likely
-
m-relay
<ofrnxmr:xmr.mx> FCMP*
-
m-relay
<syntheticbird:monero.social> I swear to god you all are understimating the amount of influence we could gain from both launching fcmp++ on mainnet and the website at the same time
-
m-relay
<syntheticbird:monero.social> Just shows the coordination and community power
-
m-relay
<basses:matrix.org> that's what im cheering for
-
m-relay
<basses:matrix.org> people will call it Monero 2.0
-
m-relay
<ofrnxmr:xmr.mx> FCMP++ should hit testnet ~this yr
-
m-relay
<syntheticbird:monero.social> yup.
-
m-relay
<syntheticbird:monero.social> 6 months maximum to make the new website
-
m-relay
<ofrnxmr:xmr.mx> but audits and mainnet launch might be a ways out
-
m-relay
<basses:matrix.org> hmmm we will see
-
m-relay
<syntheticbird:monero.social> rando is that you on reddit that asked about fcmp ?
-
m-relay
<syntheticbird:monero.social> oh wait no bad syntheticbird its offtoic
