Correct, iOS crashing at the import prompt. Desktop working as expected though

Last time I got an award like that was in a primary school football team. It had three stars too and said that I'm special :')
-
uarzlclaynh
I just binned it though instead of showing it off to naive groupies. What kind of preson takes a group achievement award and presents it as a proof of their individual prowess anyway?

I bought some XMR from a KYC source, I have now moved it away from the wallet address that I gave to the KYC, how many churns should I do now to maintain OPSEC?
-
Mochi101
Steven_M, just moving it off of the KYC source is enough.
-
Mochi101
No churning necessary.
-
Mochi101
When you receive Monero the sender is also hidden. So the person you send your XMR too will not know the address (your address) that it was sent from.
-
Mochi101
(too = to)
-
Steven_M
Mochi101: cool, thanks. :) I've never bought from KYC before. Why do some people churn, what is churning for?
-
Mochi101
Steven_M, well... I guess it gives added security. Depends on who you think is trying to see your transactions. If it's a 3 letter government agency with a lot of resources and you're particularly at risk - you might want to churn. I think churning also helps the network because there's more activity and transactions - making it more difficult for an adversary to trace things.

Do you think that you are too intelligent to be in a cult? Then I would encourage you to look into how any other cult works. They aren't populated by stupid people. Aum Shinrikyo was almost exclusively university professors and graduates. For Pete's sake - they had the know-how and means to make WMDs.
-
evrerlzsqil
As to Monero, I would encourage you to look at Jonestown mass-suicide. You know why Jones killed them all? Because he was afraid he is loosing control over them. People like that will burn everything around them rather than give up control. Being smart doesn't make you immune to being in a cult. This is the most valuable lesson Monero taught me.

Remember kids. If you call project coral reef for what it is - fluffypony embezzling half a mil usd from the monero fund for a website with smaller adoption than monero woo plugin, you will get excommunicated. Why do you think charities need Teslas? They don't and Elon won't support Monero 150k will sure buy a lot of party time for those that actually do get it.

I'm talking about Mastobong.

good music. IMHO, of course

I thought we were talking about the federated Twitter-like thing.

there is a band named Mastodon, and their merch shop is what you linked to

oh

I didn't realize that.

It wasn't me who linked to it.
-
ndorf
oh, sorry
-
apotheon
I'm aware of the band preceding the Twitterish thing.
-

I just didn't realize that was the band site.

-
Pixy
apotheon: federation is awesome
-
Pixy
but what's also awesome is that it uses a widely adopted protcol, activitypub
-
Pixy
which means that you can use a mastodon account to comment on, follow, etc. on many other kinds of services
-
Pixy
like peertube, a federated video sharing platform
-
apotheon
Pixy: Federation isn't as good as full decentralization, all else being equal.
-
apotheon
. . . but yeah, it can be good, certainly.
-
sibelius
Wouldn't full decentralization just be everyone running their own solo instance, which a rPi h=can handle for Pleroma
-
Pixy
the problem is that not all else can always be equal. particularly for a twitter-like service with many one-to-many messages pushed to occasional onlookers, a fully decentralized model has challenges
-
apotheon
Full decentralization would probably involve everyone's instance hosting its own content, and the nodes linking together to provide mutual context -- ideally with some kind of replication to provide continuity despite drop-outs.
-
apotheon
That kind of decentrlized architecture wouldn't require anyone to host a heavyweight server instance, which distributed/federated systems require.
-
apotheon
(though "distributed" is a much more malleable term in some ways, and perhaps I should've left it out)
-
sibelius
You just described the fediverse where everyone operates a solo instance, for the most part
-
-
Pixy
the chat is now not synced to device B
-
sibelius
My Pleroma instance propagates content from other instances and all
-
Pixy
it can't obtain it from the person to whom i was chatting, since it can't have come to know who that was and where to find them from device A
-
Pixy
person P doesn't know where device B is at, so they can't push the chat history
-
apotheon
Pixy: thus the need for replication, as indicated above
-
Pixy
so B pretty much remains stuck without this chat history until A is turned on again
-
Pixy
of course, the chat is already replicated across the two nodes that were involved
-
Pixy
replicating all chatrooms arbitrarily across nodes has some serious disadvantages when it comes to network/disk usage, and you also wouldn't be able to just find those arbitrary nodes
-
apotheon
Do you realize a blockchain is a (somewhat heavy, but illustrative) means of achieving the kind of replication I'm talking about?
-
Pixy
distributing some sort of a cache or addresses to a set of public nodes that are known by every other node would mitigate this problem, but it would end up adding a centralized component into the mix
-
Pixy
namely this list
-
Pixy
so that would have to be agreed upon in some sort of a decentralized manner, and that's very difficult to do
-
Pixy
<apotheon "Do you realize a blockchain is a"> blockchain is full data replication across all nodes
-
apotheon
or just use something like a "six degrees" search for an appropriately signed cache
-
Pixy
that's completely unrealistic for a chatting system
-
apotheon
There are myriad approaches to ensuring some level of replication accessibility, with different approaches being better for different use cases.
-
Pixy
remote nodes also give some cryptos an element of federation :P
-
apotheon
sure
-
apotheon
but non-dentralized federation isn't decentralized, tautologically
-
Pixy
oh yeah matrix is trash in that regard
-
Pixy
and i suppose the fact that that sort of situation can come about is a good argument against federation as a whole
-
apotheon
Ceteris paribus, decentralization is better. All else is not equal in practice, which requires coming up with way to prioritize various characteristics of a distributed system, and select appropriate mechanisms to achieve those characteristics.
-
apotheon
A lot more decentralization can be achieved in a reasonable manner than people usually set out to achieve.
-
apotheon
. . . so maybe we should keep in mind that decentralization is not only better (all else being equal) but also not an all-or-nothing proposition, and we can often do better if people are willing to try.
-
Pixy
that's fair
-
apotheon
Note, for instance, how many people just saw Signal and stopped trying to do better.
-
apotheon
Guess what: Signal's centralization is a heap of bad news.
-
apotheon
People are starting to realize that now, but when I realized it years ago nobody cared.
-
apotheon
argh
-
apotheon
frustrated
-
apotheon
need to go back to mostly-not-caring
-
apotheon
much more soothing
