can anyone help with the monero-cli wallet? I attempt to restore from a particular date, the wallet returns the restore height ~2,000,000 then it refreshes from 0 anyway. If I let it refresh from 0 it fails at the end saying something about failed to connect to daemon but it was connected and was refreshing.
-
nioc
diiirt: what do you get when you put the command status in the daemon
-
diiirt

-

but why doesn't it restore from the proper height when using restore determinsitic wallet?

I assume the daemon is still progressing

Mochi101
YES!
-
apotheon
I just realized we're out of mochi ice cream.
-
Mochi101
Mochi isn't a flavor, mochi is a lifestyle.
-
Mochi101
:P
-
Mochi101
apotheon, also... you probably mean mochi covered ice cream
-
Mochi101
mochi is a sticky rice dough sort of thing

Mochi101: I know what mochi means. We have some mochi in the fridge. I mean "mochi ice cream" because it's easier to say than "mochi covered ice cream" and nobody's going to keep saying that all the time.
-
Mochi101
I would keep saying it all the time.
-
apotheon
In fact, the flavor of the mochi ice cream we had is cookies and cream -- because the brand at the supermarket has no red bean flavor and the green tea flavor isn't all that great.
-
apotheon
Also, one doesn't typically say "mochi covered red bean paste" when eating red bean mochi.
-
Mochi101
To show my respect for both the Mochi Makers and the Ice Cream Makers equally - not to bunch them into one
-
apotheon
silly
-
Mochi101
;)
-
Mochi101
yeah the green tea is not that great
-
Mochi101
I've tried it too.
-
Mochi101
Roasted Sesame Seed flavor is good if you can get it.
-
apotheon
Mochi ice cream is the name used by the inventor of it, anyway.
-
apotheon
(yes, in english)
-
apotheon
I've had good green tea mochi, but not the stuff at our local supermarket.
-
apotheon
both regular green tea mochi and green tea mochi ice cream
-

The brand of mochi ice cream easily available to us now is very fancy and, consequently, mostly not as good as the regular stuff, but much more expensive. The cookies and cream flavor is great, though.
-
Mochi101
You're in the USA?
-
apotheon
yep
-
apotheon
If you wanted to nitpick a name, you should nitpick "red bean mochi", which would actually be azuki daifukumochi.
-
apotheon
. . . or maybe anko, depending on whether you're talking about the beans or the paste, I guess.

It's funny you didn't say anything about "dai", considering it's pronounced like "die" in English.
-

. . . but I mostly like you, so I wouldn't intend that meaning.
-
Mochi101
I take nothing personally on this platform.
-
apotheon
I'm starting to wonder whether I could get some mochi from Amazon.
-
Mochi101
-

I see peach mochi, which seems gross.
-

I'm mildly surprised I haven't seen a deeply weird mochi flavor like I'm used to seeing for other food products (e.g. shrimp chips or cucumber Pepsi).
-

(food products with a Japanese connection, that is)
-

I half expected to see something like cheese-and-spiders flavored mochi ice cream on Amazon.

I've lived in Hawaii, and I certainly don't recall this being popular there.
-
apotheon
Of course, it was the early '80s then, so maybe things have changed.
-
apotheon
Oh, right, mochi ice cream didn't exist yet, then.
-
apotheon
. . . so I suppose weird mochi offshoot treats probably weren't so prevalent.
-
apotheon
Hell, the daifuku stuff didn't even exist until 1981.
-
apotheon
That is, yukimi daifuku -- the ice milk predecessor.
-
apotheon
(had to look up that date; it's not like I know that off the top of my head)
-
apotheon
Why am I babbling about mochi?
-
Mochi101
Because mochi is awesome?
-
apotheon
maybe so
-
Mochi101
When I lived in Indonesia I used to go to this Chinese hardware store for some of my parts. They would always have like a Chinese sticky rice cooked in palm or banana leaf. It was similar to mochi but mochi still has a different consistency.

Notice that Scientologists don't stand on street corners saying "Would you like to talk about our Lord and Saviour, Xenu?"

Pixificial
Hello
-
Pixificial
Using monerod, around 69-70%, it takes ages to add new blocks for me... Any idea why?
-
binaryFate
you mean when syncing blockchain from scratch, when you're at 70%, it's slower?
-
Pixificial
Until now it was quick, but now it took 3 hours to add 14000~ blocks, I am only around 168800 of 2393000 blocks...
-
Pixificial
binaryFate: Yes!
-
binaryFate
You mean 1688000?
-
Pixificial
Yup, 168800*
-
Pixificial
From 1674000* to 1688000*
-
binaryFate
transactions formats have evolved along the history of Monero, which you are right now going through by syncing the chain
-
binaryFate
-
binaryFate
It gets noticeably slower when you get at the blocks with ringct for instance
-
binaryFate
So it's normal to see a difference. Though 14000 blocks in 3 hours sounds pretty slow
-
Pixificial
Yeah, on a HDD sadly
-
binaryFate
ah well, at least you know why... :)
-
Pixificial
Haha yes, I did see the suggestion of using SSD but I am using a laptop with 80~% storage being HDD so... *shrug*
-
Pixificial
I think I remember using your PGP signature for verifying my download (binaryfate.asc), so thanks for the help and your work on Monero :)
-
binaryFate
I often use external USB SSDs, there's so small nowadays. Works great even to run a node from it
-
binaryFate
I merely sign the work of others :)

Signing is work!
-
Pixificial
But yeah, getting a bit off-topic but what does one do with their unused storage..? The only thing coming to my mind is donating it by seeding torrents
-
binaryFate
You could sync from an external SSD, then move the blockchain file to your HDD. Once synced it's much easier to just stay in sync by running your node now and then.
-
lza_menace
so MyMonero (desktop) + monero-lws appears to be working, got a wallet synced up, restored from seed, balance is updated. However, when sending I get "This wallet must first be imported". ndorf: any known workarounds?
-
lza_menace
seemed like the import logic is too rigid, only wants to work with mymonero.com backend. i couldn't proceed with the impoort workflow but it all synced up anyways
-
ndorf
lza_menace: that's a known client-side issue. workaround is to delete your wallet client-side and re-add it
-
lza_menace
ez
-
lza_menace
thanks
-
apotheon
Pixificial: initial sync to SSD, then move it to HDD, perhaps
-
apotheon
Pixificial: I don't think there's a huge slowness problem once you get it initially synchronized, even on HDD.
-
apotheon
Pixificial: Oh, I missed that binaryFate already said that.
-
ndorf
in my experience, sending transactions is very slow when the blockchain is on SSD. i assume this is because of the random decoy inputs

good question
-
ndorf
binaryFate: the delay? it happens before the final tx confirmation question. i assumed it took that long to select the random decoys
-

Maybe I'd even give you that much every time I installed a new Monero-official build of yours.

ndorf binaryFate : the delay is grabbing the number of ouputs per block and putting it one array
-
vtnerd
there's a cache to speedup it, but I don't remember the specifics on it
-
vtnerd
it definitely could look be refactored, the original implementation was to map what the whitepaper on optimal decoy selection recommended
-
Lyza
well that explains why it cleared up for me when I added more ram / ssd cache to my server :)
-
vtnerd
yes, iirc in the worse case it walks every block in the chain to get number of outputs
-
Lyza
ouch lol
-
vtnerd
there are ways to improve this, but we'd probably have to maintain another LMDB index
-
vtnerd
well luckily lmdb is fast, with postgres or something itd really cry
-
apotheon
For a moment there, I thought you said imdb is fast.
-
Lyza
Monero: making LMDB look slow :D
-
vtnerd
well - its just that indexes in LMDB are a manual process implement ... which is simultenously why they can be so fast
-
hyc
you need to know number of outputs per block? not sure how an index would help that if you need to lookup individual blocks
-
hyc
I guess you could store number & cumulative per block height
-
hyc
do you need cumulative, or per-block?
-
apotheon
If not for gubmints, maybe we could have IRC interfaces to Monero wallets.
-
apotheon

apotheon: that would be cool actually
-
apotheon
Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to eliminate the governmental threat to IRC wallet interfaces.
-
vtnerd
hyc: per block. we could store in one key with fixed size values and then to the multi-value fetch to memcpy larger chunks
-
vtnerd
actually the problem is that there are two different fetch modes from the http-api
-
vtnerd
the most common mode is where we need cumulative per-block heights
-
vtnerd
we might be doing something similar to that already in LMDB, I'd have to look. its going to be crap either way because lots of data has to go from risk to ram quickly
-
vtnerd
*risk -> disk
