plowsof11
would you be mad if there was 'pruning 10x faster' in the next client :(
-
digital_mystik
so essentially multiple mistakes were made.. oh welp
-
digital_mystik
hey as long as I don't do any irreparable damage to my hardware I'll be fine lol
-
digital_mystik
it's been running at ~160F for four days now with some spikes
-
digital_mystik
plowsof11: is this happening? of course it is
-
plowsof11
your node will be finished before its released though so nothing lost. what about usb3.0? maybe its not in a 3.0 port?
-
digital_mystik
finishes prune.. we are pleased to announce our new and improved client..
-
digital_mystik
yeah it's usb 3.0 connecting via a thunderbolt dock
-
digital_mystik
the drive is probably getting hot and slowing down more than likely
-
plowsof11
if there are any cats in the immediate area , please shoo them away
-
digital_mystik
I don't think I'm putting much stress on the internal one since it's sitting quietly but I will copy the db over once done in case I fried the external one lol
-
digital_mystik
no cats anymore (RIP)

alpharabius[m]
I found an ebay post where someone straight up posted btc addresses to show the btc gift cards
-
alpharabius[m]
Would you buy xmr gift cards from someone like that?
-
alpharabius[m]
I assume you guys have more sense
-
rub1ck[m]
<alpharabius[m]> "Would you buy xmr gift cards..." <- Why not
-
anarkiocrypto[m]
Displaying the address helps you to verify that the funds are on the gift card (not empty or spent) and you could use Samourai or Sparrow Wallet to mix the funds after.

nioc: Out of curiosity, what's the longest a Ssd has lasted with u?
-
nioc
my first one is the 256GB about 5 years of mostly constant use
-
nioc
there was a vps provider that did an analysis where SSD were more reliable than HDDs
-
nioc
ofc when a HDD goes bad you can usually save data from it while when a SSD goes bad then whoops
-
nioc
I had a HDD go bad after 2 years of running monerod but don't think that is common
-
Torr
I see
-
Torr
Thank you
-
nioc
yw
-
nioc
the bigger the SSD the longer it lasts
-
Torr
'cause of the higher capacitor count?
-
nioc
for the same amount of data each "unit" will get used less in a bigger drive
-
Torr
Makes sense
-
nioc
the controller spreads out the workload
-
nioc
I synced from scratch with both a PCIe 3 and a PCIe 4 SSD with same processor and there was no speed difference
-
nioc
both 1TB
-
nioc
I recently stopped using the comp with the 256 as it was overall a weak machine
-
Torr
Make it lift for a while, 'til it developes some big guns xD
-
Torr
Leaving here
-
Torr
See ya

DanIsnotthemanBr
Maybe get enterprise ssd, warranty is 5 years normally
-
nioc
I expect any decent SSD to last 5 years after which will be itching to upgrade
-
digital_mystik
yay!! it worked.. I thought my drive crashed since it quit out and it unmounted (couldn't mount until after a reboot for whatever reason). thought it fried it there for a second but now I'm able to start syncing up with the new transactions.. pruning only took me 5 days according to my terminal emulator lol
-
digital_mystik
48 GiB pruned

M4rkal[m]
What has happened to the RPC pay feature?
-
M4rkal[m]
I mean does it still work?
-
rbrunner
I think it should still technically work, but still limited to the original extent, which means support only in the CLI wallet app and nowhere else
-
rbrunner
And I never heard that anybody ever successfully put up a remote daemon that needed you to pay that way
-
rbrunner
Which lead me to ask the following question a few months ago:
seraphis-migration/wallet3 #3
-
saxal
will this commit be added anytime soon
monero-project/monero #8677
-
saxal
-
rbrunner
Hard to say. It will added to master anyway that you would have to compile yourself. Technically, you could check out master, cherry-pick those commits and get them early for yourself.
-
rbrunner
Would probably be very welcome additional testing if you do :)
-
saxal
if are added on master this bring more security feeling...
-
M4rkal[m]
<rbrunner> "And I never heard that anybody..." <- Oh ok
-
saxal
both commits are very important
-
rbrunner
Hmm, after my quick glance I did not get the impression that those are about security, more like optimization, but I may be mistaken of course
-
saxal
"security feeling" i mean because they'll be added on master
-
saxal
this are just speed ups
-
rbrunner
Ah, ok :) Yeah, such things need good testing. Don't want to shoot holes into our beautiful coin.
-
Torr
Ahoyyy
-
networkzaij[m]
<saxal> "will this commit be added..." <- Will this reduce sync times significantly?
-
saxal
yes
-
saxal
RingCT speed up cache is around 6X better
-
sech1
it doesn't speed up sync
-
saxal
propagation
-
saxal
cpu will put less effort
-
sech1
yes
-
saxal
is important specially for arm cpus i think
-
saxal
more battery life...
-
sech1
for normal node operation (when it's synced), yes
-
sech1
but not 6x
-
sech1
overall saving is 2x, because each transaction is verified 2 times without this patch
-
sech1
6x is for the second check when a new block is added
-
saxal
someone must added this fast anyway
-
several_spaces[m
hello everyone :) new to matrix chat, looks good. I find it kind of ironic that the first thing they ask for is to verify my identity while im tryna join a monero chat room
-
several_spaces[m
noped right outta that lol
-
apotheon
reasonable reaction
-
RavFX[m]
several_spaces[m: Matrix.org do that, there are a lot of matrix home server that are less into IDying users
-
narodnik
or just use irc
-
» narodnik is on irc
-
plowsof11
several_spaces go ahead and set up a matrix instance that allows no email verification and send us all an invite
-
plowsof11
allow tor users too
-
apotheon
I second that
-
apotheon
.
-
RavFX[m]
email verification are fine (anyone is free to create email account where they wish).
-
RavFX[m]
what is anoying are phone verification
-
jozsef[m]
Phone numbers are so last century.
-
RavFX[m]
Most that in a lot of countries, you have to provide ID p0rn to get access to a SIM card and the fee to get a new one are quite high.
-
apotheon
please explain
-
alpharabius[m]
Guys
-
apotheon
What is ID p0rn?
-
apotheon
alpharabius[m]: hi
-
jozsef[m]
kyc
-
apotheon
ah
-
alpharabius[m]
I'm happy i have xmr instead of trace guys
-
apotheon
What's a high fee for a SIM card?
-
apotheon
Trace?
-
apotheon
Is there a cryptocurrency by that name?
-
RavFX[m]
apotheon: When you have to pay like 30$ plus get a credit inquery
-
RavFX[m]
Fortunately i'm in a free countries so SIM card can be obtained at random convenient store, without ID, for like 2$ each. Can get a 10-pack without question
-
jozsef[m]
I have a silent.link sim. Not sure if it's available everywhere. No kyc, pay with btc, as you go.
-
apotheon
Where do you have to pay for someone else to run a credit check on you?
-
RavFX[m]
I pay for my SIM prepaid stuff with bitrefill, Trocador pawaa
-
apotheon
jozsef[m]: Aren't those eSIMs?
-
jozsef[m]
yes
-
RavFX[m]
apotheon: 30$ are the fee to get the sim.
-
RavFX[m]
the credit check is free
-
apotheon
I wonder how much a SIM costs here. It might be close to 30 USD.
-
RavFX[m]
🤮
-
RavFX[m]
30$ is the price of a burner phone (also available at random convenient store). Add 2$ for the sim lol
-
jozsef[m]
Oh. Just noticed silenr.link nowndirectly accepts xmr. 😍
-
jozsef[m]
Last topup I still had to use btc.
-
apotheon
I don't even remember what a SIM cost. It was years ago that I last had to get a new SIM.
-
RavFX[m]
the phone number verification scam is such a scam I mean, it create a very big inequality between totalitarian states and free countries.
-
apotheon
jozsef[m]: Yeah, I think I heard about it taking Monero, a little while ago.
-
apotheon
RavFX[m]: I agree that it's stupid.
-
apotheon
for a whole host of reasons
-
DanIsnotthemanBr
I think silent.link allowed xmr recently
-
apotheon
yep
-
apotheon
I haven't used it, though: no need, yet.
-
RavFX[m]
it say NO NUMBER Data Only and all IDENTITY Data+SMS+Voicein plans
-
RavFX[m]
how can you do verifications if you have no number.
-
RavFX[m]
Or I did miss something
-
apotheon
I'm not sure what you're asking.
-
jozsef[m]
I just love telling buerocrats "I don't have a phone number". They are looking at me like I'm a leper. 🤪 No exceptions.
-
apotheon
. . . or if you're asking something, even.
-
apotheon
I'd have to say "I don't have a phone number to give you."
-
RavFX[m]
When I go on silent.link and check price.
-
RavFX[m]
on top it say NO NUMBER, Data only blabla
-
apotheon
. . . because I do have a number, but maybe not one I want to give to a bureaucrat.
-
jozsef[m]
Theu also have plans with number. But I never call anyone and no one calls me. Hehe.
-
RavFX[m]
And it's too expensive when I have access to SIM from random store without id (2$ SIM, then ~10$ to get about 4-5GB worth of Data)
-
RavFX[m]
But I guess it's pratical for scammy countries that don't have cheap sim / sim without extensive verifications
-
jozsef[m]
I even converted all my family to matrix for msgs, audio, video.
-
RavFX[m]
I did convert mine to signal for family.
-
RavFX[m]
lot of them where already using whatsapp so easy swap.
-
RavFX[m]
Plus signal leak a lot less metadata than matrix
-
RavFX[m]
Other guy here was right the other day, XMPP is better
-
jozsef[m]
I didn't like that signal's server code is not open source. Or is that telegram?
-
RavFX[m]
jozsef[m]: Signal is opensource, they did delay code release in the past.
-
jozsef[m]
Ah ok.
-
RavFX[m]
Could be telegram.
-
RavFX[m]
They do have a FOSS client but I have no idea for server side
-
jozsef[m]
Ah, I remember now why I didn't like signal: phone number id.
-
RavFX[m]
Yeah, but it's well handled at least. (signal don't keep the contact relation).
-
RavFX[m]
And that give the easy of switch for whole familly when they all use whatsapp.
-
RavFX[m]
contact just all show up without adding them
-
RavFX[m]
Plus it got proved OK.
-
RavFX[m]
FBI ask Signal for info
-
RavFX[m]
Signal just answer : Yeah, that number use signal indeed, he registred on xx date. That's the only info we have, sorry
-
RavFX[m]
Compared to telegram actually leaking data or Matrix leaking a ton of metadata. Could try to get familia to use XMPP but it's going to be more time consuming
-
RavFX[m]
* Compared to telegram actually relinquishing requested data or Matrix leaking a ton of metadata. Could try to get familia to use XMPP but it's going to be more time consuming
-
as2333
yeah signal requires an NSA fucktardphone - it's a stupid joke
-
ofrnxmr[m]
<RavFX[m]> "Signal is opensource, they did..." <- Right. But sometimes binary source is unavailable.
-
ofrnxmr[m]
Session does the same, release apks that are built using blobs with unavailable source
-
as2333
signal servers are on the amazon-NSA cloud. Another stupid joke
-
RavFX[m]
as2333: imo it's fine if it's properly e2ee and nsa don't have the keys. Signal need reliable servers I guess.
-
as2333
the signal guy got 3 millions from the pentagon to write signal. Nothing to see here, move on.
-
as2333
and how about signals little shitcoin scam? =)
-
NorrinRadd
it can be on cloud and encrypted at the same time
-
NorrinRadd
sufficiently encrypted negates that
-
ofrnxmr[m]
Session was outted when trying to fork for fdroid - the signal code they were using didnt have any available source
-
ofrnxmr[m]
Cofe
-
ofrnxmr[m]
Code
-
RavFX[m]
as2333: I hope you are not using tor too !
-
as2333
I use tor like the toy it is
-
NorrinRadd
as2333: you have a reference for the $3 million statement?
-
as2333
it gives some 'plausbile deniability' in some cases
-
as2333
NorrinRadd of course - look up signal and the so called 'open technology fund'
-
as2333
-
NorrinRadd
keep in mind Trump coupe plot was surrounded by using signal
-
NorrinRadd
if signal was bugged, they'd know
-
NorrinRadd
Scott Perry, Meadows, all wanted to move all conversations to Signal
-
as2333
more evidence that signal is a honeypot, yes
-
NorrinRadd
wtf
-
NorrinRadd
evidence how?
-
RavFX[m]
States agencies often finance these kind of project, because they also need them.
-
as2333
allegedly used by 'conspirators'
-
RavFX[m]
NSA/CIA need Tor
-
RavFX[m]
NSA/CIA need Signal...
-
RavFX[m]
They all run shady operation...

as2333
lawl

NorrinRadd

as2333
double lawl
-
NorrinRadd
RavFX[m]++
-
NorrinRadd
tin foil hat identified
-
as2333
NorrinRadd so you didn't know that signal was funded by the pentagon
-
RavFX[m]
And we all chatting right now in an un-encrypted room on a service knew to leak a massive amount of metadata
-
as2333
NorrinRadd cop identified
-
as2333
yep, but I know what I'm doing here.
-
NorrinRadd
"allegedly used by 'conspirators'" -- wtf does this mean? they have the text messages
-
as2333
NorrinRadd actually I don't who the people you mention are and I don't carea about them or trump. They have nothing to do with the facts I mentioned.
-
NorrinRadd
sure, you know everything. that's nice.
-
as2333
so you didn't know that signal was funded by the pentagon, and now you just ignore it.
-
NorrinRadd
so is tor
-
NorrinRadd
who gives a fuck
-
as2333
people like you obv don't
-
as2333
-
NorrinRadd
old news
-
NorrinRadd
not saying anything useful
-
NorrinRadd
Signal is rock solid

as2333
>For now it's listed for sale on just one cryptocurrency exchange, FTX
-
sech1
FTX, lol
-
as2333
>its 250 million coins, at around $69 each, are currently worth almost $17 billion
-
as2333
well that was then - morlonpoke shitcoin now 'trades' at $1 =)
-
RavFX[m]
mobilecoin is just... lol
-
RavFX[m]
that thing still exist?
-
RavFX[m]
btw, DARPA in involved in and is funding Linux.
-
RavFX[m]
Stop using Linux now!!!
-
RavFX[m]
mobilecoin is available almose everywhre, including binance, finex, coinex...
-
NorrinRadd
DARPA made the internet. The internet cannot be trusted.
-
-
RavFX[m]
stop using it now
-
RavFX[m]
stop using all crypto, they depend on internet
-
as2333
indeed, the idea that you're going to use the arpanet against the criminals who created is troubled at best
-
as2333
who created +it
-
as2333
RavFX[m] are you seeling drugs using the government mail system?
-
RavFX[m]
<as2333> "RavFX are you seeling drugs..." <- I'm not involved in that market lol
-
jozsef[m]
I find this at high level about matrix leaking metadata:
-
jozsef[m]
> server admins can see who you talk to & when (but not what)
-
jozsef[m]
-
RavFX[m]
There is something about other media in the chats that are not text.
-
RavFX[m]
like image, video...
-
jozsef[m]
Based on comments at
matrix-org/synapse #2188, could running a matrix server within i2p mitigate the problem?
-
RavFX[m]
jozsef[m]: Could probably help yeah

sech1
wow, whoever created this CCS underestimated the work required by at least a factor of 10
-
nioc
sech1: from -community .....
-
nioc
Hi I'm boog from the proposal, thanks for your feedback, I just wanted to say that a lot of work has already been done integrating bits of the monero code base in rust so I will not be starting from scratch.
-
nioc
I have spent the last couple months studying and building out bits of monero in rust like the database which is on my GitHub, network types and epee encoding which I will be releasing soon. I have also implemented verification of post Rct amounts (boro-sigs and bulletproof(+)) which I might release to show but I only implemented them to help me understand them better not to actually get used
-
nioc
I guess that still doesn't address 10X
-
sech1
almost 9 years of code legacy and numerous hardforks that all must be reimplemented. It's not just "Ring signatures (MLSAG, CLSAG)" as it says in CCS
-
sech1
just syncing from scratch will require tons of code
-
sech1
src folder alone has 8.5 MB of C/C++ code
-
sech1
you don't write that amount in 39 weeks
-
plowsof11
i assume he will be 'improving' the existing monero-rs
github.com/monero-rs/monero-rs
-
plowsof11
i have no idea what state its in currently
-
sech1
p2pool is 0.5 MB of code and it took 4 weeks working 10 hours/day, and I didn't have to be backwards compatible
-
sech1
just by this metric it's a gross underestimation
-
sech1
add to this all the new bugs that will be introduced with the new code
-
sech1
in 39 weeks, at best he'll write some wrappers around critical C/C++ parts taken directly from Monero code
-
sech1
his repos are just forks of the existing Rust Monero projects
-
sech1
and he didn't do much work on them, judging by the commits
-
sech1
taking a massive project like this alone is either crazy or stupid
-
sech1
it needs a team of 5-10 people who are all senior level Rust programmers with previous C/C++ experience, imho
-
nioc
boog900[m]: ^^^
-
plowsof11
thank you sech1
-
sech1
5-10 experienced people in 39 weeks - possible
-
sech1
1 person - no
-
sech1
I would suggest taking some small isolated part of Monero codebase and implementing it in Rust
-
sech1
as a beginning
-
sech1
this CCS must be split in much smaller parts, preferably achievable within a month each
