I've heard of a couple other smartchain projects that claim to be The Most Private™, but they look very scammy to me, so . . . I'm not going to recommend them.

If you're waiting anyway, you may want to wait for DarkFi instead of a promised upgrade to Ethereum.

Ethereum's founder and main user base have shown distinctly surveillance-friendly sides of their respective personalities.

If you want something Ethereum-compatible for smart contracts, you might consider checking out the Aurora project, which runs an Ethereum-compatible VM running on the NEAR Protocol, and I think there's a bit of privacy-oriented charitable funding of projects on Aurora.

How long is the sign/verify function in the monero gui wallet supposed to take?

On the 0.18.2.2-release (Qt 5.12.8) version of the monero-gui-wallet (Intel MacOS), signing a message is instant. When I go to verify, the application becomes unresponsive.
