So half of Kovri work (which wasn't counted as core hours ever) took me up to full time work on Monero in some capacity.

I also don't get why I'm still the scapegoat. It's me that ripped people off for some reason instead of Core who thought it was a good arrangement for years?

The feedback I could provide is I notice you are a bit overly optimistic about people being actually willing to get paid in Monero, but then again our talent needs are not great so we might be lucky to find some true believers to come work for the cause

Regarding the part of candidates being able to remain anonymous, it will be a bit tough

because how do you know who are you contacting for sure, how do you confirm their backgrounds beyond what they tell you in two or three interviews, even if those interviews are really hard to fake

You can't asses the background of anonymous people

And then finally, as you mentioned your approach is not targeted so it will likely get us "whatever" talent

At least in my experience

Your approach and your expertise on what tickles scholars is super useful to the cause to be honest

That way, if someone is bluffing on their capabilities somehow, it doesn't matter because they won't be able to deliver, in reality, and therefore won't get paid.

Ok, so people have options. Don't be anon and you can be paid up-front in fiat. Stay anon and you can be paid after delivery with XMR. It depends on how important pseudonymity is to potential recruits. I think they should have that option, even if it has some costs.

For mainstream research grants, there are almost always reporting requirements, anyway. Regardless of whether the research ultimately was a dead end.

I have an undisclosed amount of experience with writing research grants to mainstream funding sources and let me tell you, it sucks. Everything about the process sucks. I would suggest that as much as possibly we completely sidestep any university institutional processes and instead make direct payments to individuals.

So another advantage the Monero Project can offer is to not deal with all the institutional bureaucracy that drags down the research process. I put a link in the Reddit post about the current state of affairs with respect to mainstream research grants.

Fwiw, when MAGIC started, Brandon was extremely into the idea of funding graduate students to do cryptocurrency research and privacy research (not exclusively for Monero, but Monero was a big part of the goals)

He reached out to dozens of different departments and used all the contacts he could to get in the door with people

He tried to look into funding outside the university to prevent their cut, or to work around it

Sadly, the aspirations we're WAY too large at the time for a brand new org, and MAGIC ended up completely scaling back all graduate grants at the time, after nothing really materialized despite enormous effort by Brandon

He definitely made some promising inroads, but we weren't equipped to handle them. Some of the inroads would have cost hundreds of thousands of dollars a year

Ultimately, Brandon got burned out and left this project he, which is far too much for one person only, and the mantle hasn't been properly picked up since

I'm glad there is renewed interest, but realize that this is an absolutely enormous project that requires research and uni contacts, much more funding than you would expect even on the low end, and they strongly prefer to talk to stable orgs

There are definitely smaller ways to conduct recruiting outreach, and I recommend starting with the easiest stuff. Sometimes even getting Monero's name in the door is valuable

sgp_: Thanks a lot for the historical background. I have two main related thoughts:

1) What you said makes me lean more toward an extra-institutional approach. So we target:

a) Grad students (Master's but especially PhD) who are facing gaps in funding. They might not have research or teaching funding for the summer. Instead, work for Monero! 2) I think Monero and other POW coins without a founder's reward should really not be funding "basic research" or open-ended scholarships for education. Monero doesn't have money to burn. I know MAGIC does that for undergrads, but graduate students are different. I mean basic research in the technical sense. Zcash, premined, ICO coins that have war chests can do that. (And I actually looked into Zcash for funding for some "basic

research" about the economic issues internal and external to cryptocurrencies, but turns out they require KYC for their grants **for a privacy coin!**)
