<plowsof:matrix.org> For the first time(?) an abandoned* CCS proposal can be handed over and completed by someone else. The original proposer has no issues with this and will ensure the tasks are completed by reviewing/merging the work (which has already happened for some tasks).

<recanman:agoradesk.com> The monerophp one?
-
m-relay
<plowsof:matrix.org> Problem: 0 up/down doots on gitlab , which wont get it merged . Last meeting:
libera.monerologs.net/monero-community/20230819 merge request itself

<chch3003:monero.social> Cool project I just found:
github.com/creating2morrow/neveko
-
m-relay
<rbrunner7:monero.social> chch3003: Where did you get aware of this project?
-
m-relay
-
m-relay
<rbrunner7:monero.social> Thanks, just became aware that I saw that link back at start of June. Probably missed a few things still back then that are implemented now.
-
m-relay
<chch3003:monero.social> Right. Good to know that things are moving on.
-
m-relay
<4rkal:matrix.org> What's all this discussion about a Monero asic?
-
m-relay
-
m-relay
<rucknium:monero.social> 4rkal: Knowledgeable people say the watts per hashes efficiency is on par with consumer CPUs. It might just be several consumer CPUs chained together. That probably doesn't even qualify as an ASIC.
-
m-relay
<4rkal:matrix.org> Yeah looks like they didn't mention the word asic just "personal miner"
-
m-relay
<4rkal:matrix.org> *professional
-
m-relay
<rucknium:monero.social> The knowledgeable people can be found in #monero-pow:monero.social

<rbrunner7:monero.social> If you don't want to join that room just for reading a bit today, here a link to a HTML log found on Reddit:

<ajs_:matrix.org> kinda makes sense now why Bitmain wanted to be a sponsor of MoneroKon
-

<xfedex:matrix.org> The image says it's a RISC-V
-
m-relay
<xfedex:matrix.org> The image says it's a RISC-V CPU

<xfedex:matrix.org> The image says it's made of RISC-V CPUs
-
m-relay
<xfedex:matrix.org> And power efficiency is lower than Zen3 CPUs (launch date 2020)
-
ComplyLast
everyone wanted powerful readily accessible RISC-V pcs
-
ComplyLast
now we have itg
-
ComplyLast
.praise jihan
-
m-relay
<rucknium:monero.social> Do you think it qualifies as an Application-Specific Integrated Circuit?
-
ComplyLast
it seems like a general purpose computer, but I guess we will see
-
ComplyLast
"available for mining multiple cryptocurrencies"
-
ComplyLast
seems like just a cluster of RISC-V socs
-
hyc
it is as application-specific as putting an ARM CPU in a case and calling it an iPod dedicated to playing music
-
ComplyLast
are you going to get one hyc?
-
hyc
nah, if I'm spending $3500 on a compute device I'll buy one that's not a sealed black box
-
ComplyLast
curious how open it will be
-
hyc
has bitmain opened up any of their gear, specs, firmware, ever before?
-
ComplyLast
no idea
-
kico
how many cpus per unit?
-
kico
so many questions :P
-
kico
maybe we should CCS and get couple units for science
-
hyc
I bet nvidia are glad their products are all over the AI bandwagon and they can leave mining behind
-
kico
they seem to be doing great
-
kico
seems that for each 1M AI companies raise 250k go to nvidia straight
-
kico
"new study shows"
-
hyc
yeah they're sitting pretty
-
m-relay
<123bob123:matrix.org> Ironic that bitmain is from china?
-
geonic
some of these ccs proposals really need more visibility
-
geonic
-
m-relay
<ctrej:matrix.org> yeah, people need to discuss things before they are funded
-
m-relay
<ctrej:matrix.org> reminder that there is a RSS feed for the CCS merge page, which works without logging in
-
m-relay
<btclovera:matrix.org> So we have ASIC or there are just a bunch of RISC-V in a case? I don’t think it applies like ASIC
-
m-relay
<ctrej:matrix.org> multiple riscv cores per chip, multiple of those chips in a case, that'd be my bet
-
m-relay
<123bob123:matrix.org> Just branding
-
m-relay
<123bob123:matrix.org> Calling it an asic miner
-
m-relay
<rucknium:monero.social> Someone reminded us that the tweet did not call it an ASIC. Just a "professional miner". Maybe it's easier to plug and play this than set up 8 CPUs with custom cooling or something.
-
m-relay
<rucknium:monero.social> A true professional may do a profit analysis and conclude that it's most profitable to mine on hardware you already own 😎
-
m-relay
<btclovera:matrix.org> Well …We are comparing the efficiency of Ryzen Vs these RSIC-V. But it is clear that the average user must purchase Motherboard + Power supply + Ram (minimum) and here you have a Box with a good Hashrate for ~3000$?
-
m-relay
<btclovera:matrix.org> With 3000$ you don’t buy ~ 15 AMD Ryzen 3900X + MoBo + PSU + RAM
-
m-relay
<polar9669:matrix.org> The price is out ? Or is that a guess
-
m-relay
<btclovera:matrix.org> A guess
-
m-relay
<btclovera:matrix.org> Based on a ROI 1 year w/o electricity cost like they always do
-
m-relay
<polar9669:matrix.org> That’s not always the case for every miner they launch and specially not at bear market coin price
-
m-relay
<polar9669:matrix.org> Anyways, we should know about the price very soon
-
m-relay
<123bob123:matrix.org> Only professionals can use the professional miner?
-
m-relay
<123bob123:matrix.org> Call it commercial grade or something
-
m-relay
<polar9669:matrix.org> Bitmain monero ASICS was priced at 11k something for first batch before they became door stoppers
-
m-relay
<polar9669:matrix.org> Easy plug and play for commercial miners
-
m-relay
<polar9669:matrix.org> With a complementary chinese malware pre installed 😁
-
hyc
oh don't forget the backdoor killswitch
-
hyc
what would be ironic is if these things get out into the wild, and people discover they're running some flavor of linux and they can just ssh in and use them as AI crunchers
-
m-relay
<123bob123:matrix.org> Port 22 ftw

<chch3003:monero.social> I have an issue with my Monero GUI wallet, 0.18.2.2. I open a wallet from .keys file using Simple mode, not portable
-

<chch3003:monero.social> And it tries to connect to local daemon.

<chch3003:monero.social> Error: Couldn't connect to daemon: 127.0.0.1:18081
-
m-relay
<chch3003:monero.social> The thing is that I switch between that first Simple Mode (not downloading the chain) and Advanced Mode (downloading the chain on external ssd) back and forth, and it seems I screw up something. It doesn't switch to Simple Mode anymore even if I select it. Like if the app wallet has some cache that is not updated properly.
-
m-relay
<chch3003:monero.social> Hmm I tried again Simple mode no bootstrap and now it connected to a remote node directly...
-
gingeropolous
yeah simple mode is remote node.
-
gingeropolous
i've found u need to give the GUI like 15 seconds for it activate whatever changes u did
-
selsta
That error simply means that the GUI tries to connect to the daemon before it's started.
-
selsta
Also restarting your computer might help in these situation, though shouldn't be necessary.
-

<chch3003:monero.social> I don't understand why he tried to connect to local daemon. I think I waited more than 15 seconds. After around that time I was getting a popup "Connect connect to local node (or something like that)". Anyway, it's fine

<kayabanerve:matrix.org> Left a pair of comments on Reddit I found informative. I do understand hyc's concerns, yet I don't believe they should have such a hard line against alternative nodes (and I do assume they're present in this room. I'd be happy to talk more about it here :) )
