i have been having severe issues for over a week with my balance saying 0 after ive sent 3 transactions to my wallet and now it takes forever to sync repeatedly
-
plowsof[m]
do you know what mode your wallet is in (advanced / simple)?
-
dunceharvey[m]
it is advanced. running my own node
-
plowsof[m]
it is a common problem dunceharvey, should be resolved quite easily, dont worry
-
dunceharvey[m]
it is on whonix. i heard there is a bug in virtual machines on github
-
dunceharvey[m]
i appreciate any help. its been a nightmare
-
plowsof[m]
ah right , whonix, i have no experience with that 🤔 =(
-
plowsof[m]
does your gui say your local daemon is synchronised?
-
dunceharvey[m]
not sure if it matters the OS the wallet is installed on. could be something else
-
dunceharvey[m]
it takes forever to synchronize and then when it does, it stays synced for 5 minutes and then takes hours to synchronize again. but thats only after i updated the wallet gui and recovered my wallet usinig mnemonic seed
-
plowsof[m]
can you go to settings -> log
-
plowsof[m]
was your local daemon ever synchronised ? if not, your balance will never appear
-
plowsof[m]
i think you can enter 'status' and it will output , please try
-
dunceharvey[m]
yes its been syncronized and it still never appeared. i also tried rescanning the wallet balance as well as changing the restore height to a date previous of when the transactions were sent to my wallet
-
plowsof[m]
interesting, theyre all the correct steps
-
dunceharvey[m]
yes i have done all the research and still having the issues
-
plowsof[m]
status in settings -> log?
-
dunceharvey[m]
the only thing i havent been able to figure out is how to verify the transactions were made on the blockchain because i dont know how to find transaction id/hash to enter into xmrchain.net
-
dunceharvey[m]
would you like me to copy and paste my log?
-
plowsof[m]
just the status for now
-
plowsof[m]
e.g. the height: n / n
-
plowsof[m]
and version
-
plowsof[m]
(i can't copy text from the log within the gui) :D
-
plowsof[m]
ctrl+c works though

[6/1/22 2:40 AM] 2022-06-01 02:40:42.840 I Monero 'Oxygen Orion' (v0.17.3.0-release)
-
dunceharvey[m]
Height: 1161924/2635903 (44.1%) on mainnet, not mining, net hash 31.15 MH/s, v3, 12(out)+0(in) connections, uptime 0d 1h 14m 24s
-
plowsof[m]
ok so your 44% synced and the 'pain' / slowness didn't even begin yet
-
plowsof[m]
my condolences
-
dunceharvey[m]
i appreciate it. i think i was synced previously yet still a 0 balance
-
dunceharvey[m]
is it true that when you change the restore height, you choose a date previous to when all transactions were made?
-
plowsof[m]
yep, to be more exact you can even choose the block before the payment had its first confirmation
-
plowsof[m]
so , your not-yet-synced-monerod aside. do you have the txid from payments you where sent
-
plowsof[m]
no info at all?
-
dunceharvey[m]
it was from kraken and there is a transaction id associated with each withdrawal but when i enter it into xmrchain.net nothing comes up
-
plowsof[m]
right let me think if kraken give txids
-
dunceharvey[m]
they call it a hash too i guess but i dont know how to find that in order to verify that the transaction is on the blockchain
-
plowsof[m]
is their page broken (normally they have the txid and a link to block explorer (for other coins))
-
plowsof[m]
but, if its from kraken, and the address matches, we dont need to worry that you received the funds , theyre reputable
-
dunceharvey[m]
i have been debating contacting support at kraken. they have really good support but just didnt feel comfortable discussing this issue with them
-
dunceharvey[m]
im sure i sent to correct address
-
plowsof[m]
for now, its just that your monerod isn't synced , its possible that your wallet was connected to your local node / fully synced - and as you describe -
-
plowsof[m]
so your wallet is synced up with the 'not synced monerod' which updates intermittently as you describe
-
dunceharvey[m]
i have heard a bit about monerod. isnt that associated with linux?
-
plowsof[m]
oh 'monerod' is your local node
-
dunceharvey[m]
oh okay thanks
-
plowsof[m]
you can connect to a remote node if you want? to check your balance?
-
dunceharvey[m]
so a thought i had is that maybe i wouldnt be having this issue if i connect to a remote node
-
dunceharvey[m]
exactly what i was thinking
-
plowsof[m]
ok lol
-
plowsof[m]
settings -> node -> click remote node
-
plowsof[m]
click on the (+) add remote node
-
dunceharvey[m]
is there a reputable remote node that i can connect to manually so i dont have to worry about connecting to a rogue node?
-
plowsof[m]
are you using tor? or
-
plowsof[m]
yes ill give you one
-
plowsof[m]
address: node2.sethforprivacy.com
-
plowsof[m]
port: 18089
-
dunceharvey[m]
yes tor
-
dunceharvey[m]
i appreciate it
-
plowsof[m]
oh tor ok
-
plowsof[m]
and your gui is setup to use tor (proxy)?
-
dunceharvey[m]
i am not sure about that tbh. i am guessing not
-
plowsof[m]
ok , you can connect to a tor node , but im not sure about your setup
-
plowsof[m]
users can 'open a tor browser' then go into the gui settings -> interface and click on Socks proxy, and set the local port to 9051 or 9050
-
plowsof[m]
opening the tor browser starts the tor proxy automagically
-
plowsof[m]
but you can use the clearnet node i listed above to sync your wallet
-
plowsof[m]
you can 'spend' from a tor node for extra privacy later
-
dunceharvey[m]
very interesting. not sure if my gui is running through tor right now but its installed on whonix OS which i think is supposed to do everything through tor
-
plowsof[m]
oh right, just try a tor node then
-
plowsof[m]
majesticrepik35vnngouksfl7jiwf6sj7s2doj3bvdffq27tgqoeayd.onion
-
plowsof[m]
port 18089
-
dunceharvey[m]
appreciate that
-
plowsof[m]
-
plowsof[m]
there is a site 'monero.fail' but those nodes are not vetted, and rogue ones are there also
-
dunceharvey[m]
i really really appreciate the good info. will bookmark this. i tend to trust github
-
dunceharvey[m]
i added the remote node but the status says disconnected. will i have to just wait?
-
plowsof[m]
yes that list is used by feather wallet (reputable wallet)
-
plowsof[m]
if you added the tor node and it says disconnected, then .... i dont know how whonix works. maybe monero gui isnt configured to use it and needs the socks proxy set
-
dunceharvey[m]
i think you are right. i will have to use a clearnet one
-
plowsof[m]
try and start a tor browser in whonix
-
plowsof[m]
then in the socks proxy put 9052 and localhost ?
-
dunceharvey[m]
do i understand it correctly that if im running a local node that it is possible my local node (part of the blockhain) is corrupted?
-
plowsof[m]
9152*
-
plowsof[m]
or 9050 ,, ehh ,, its late and my brain has stopped functioning lol
-
dunceharvey[m]
lol yeah getting late. could try that
-
plowsof[m]
it is possible but, your node is not synced, its probably .. several years back in time
-
plowsof[m]
if you type status again and the number icnreased, its fine
-
dunceharvey[m]
wow it can take YEARS to sync?
-
plowsof[m]
lol no, hours / days probably , i mean your node is stuck in circa 2017~
-
plowsof[m]
if you want to use it , youl have to let it sync fully
-
dunceharvey[m]
to go back to local node just go to node>start daeomon...is that right?
-
plowsof[m]
yep
-
plowsof[m]
it will resume
-
dunceharvey[m]
i guess there is no way to remove a remote node from the list once it has been created?
-
dunceharvey[m]
okay
-
plowsof[m]
you can click on X (far right) to remove the node
-
dunceharvey[m]
okay i will try that once i get back into it
-
dunceharvey[m]
i am new to this element.io
-
dunceharvey[m]
is there a way i can save our chat history?
-
plowsof[m]
-
dunceharvey[m]
damn bro thats awesome thanks
-
dunceharvey[m]
my wallet wont seem to close right now. it says "closing wallet" and has hung there for like 5 minutes
-
plowsof[m]
close your eyes and ignore
-
dunceharvey[m]
appreciate all your help tonight. take care
